It’s harder to win races in Ireland

More like impossible when your getting them handicapped for a UK campaign, a la Dirar, who wasn’t sighted in his 5 runs over hurdles before getting a mark, then the handbrake released in some style. "He took a while to come himself" said Gordon with a straight face. :|

Doubt Lydia will see it like that. :x

Lovely to watch wasn`t it. Will Dirar run and win again today?

If I as an owner was based in Ireland,I would insist my trainer raced in the UK. It is no game to be in if you are ballotted out every week which happens in Ireland.
What is the number of racehorses compared to the UK?. Why does this happen?

Latst figures I could find from a search were for 2003, though I’m sure someone could come up with more recent figures. However, it does illustrate the problem.

    Horses ballotted out
    UK – 1185
    Ireland – 4323

    Number of starters
    UK – 83063
    Ireland – 29802

    Number of races
    UK – 8028
    Ireland – 2166

We get a figure of declarations per race of
    UK – 10.5
    Ireland – 15.6

That pretty clearly illustrates the problem. It’s harder to win races in Ireland hence the non-achievers will ‘back up’ in maidens and low grade handicaps to worsen the problem at that end.

Thanks Rob. As you say, illustrates the problem. I find they spice up our racing a bit although we have to get the handicapping sorted.

Does Maggio hold the record for most trips back and forward across the Irish Sea? He has often been highly tried, so tho he came up short today, I was delighted to see him land a big one at Aintree in April

    Maggio has started 50 races.

He ran 8 times on this side of the Irish Sea when trained by Nigel Hawke. Of his subsequent 42 races, when trained by his current handler Patrick Griffin in Co. Dublin, 33 were visits to the UK while 9 have been in Ireland.

It might be difficult to top that number of trips across the water.

Wondering about the rationale for so many trips, considering the expense + the hassle. But if it works, should more trainers be trying it? Gordon Elliot seems particularly skilled at travelling + placing his horses

    Gordon Elliot at Perth.

Another 4 winners today; why is he so successful at this track?

Having so many horses, he can send over horses of a lower level in his yard to places like Perth, where the level isn’t as high.

Quite a few Irish trainers send them over there, that hardly get placed in Irish races, and do well.

One thing i always wonder is, if you are say an owner within Elliots, are you happy to have your horse shipped (costing decent money) and the prize money being poor- alright you get a winner, but it could be a 20L winner, ruining his handicap mark for a lot of races in the future.

The mare Make My Heart Fly was bought cheaply by Elliott out of Ali Stronge’s yard and did nothing until he sent it over to Perth to win a poor Amateur Riders’ hurdle off a mark of 88. It then rattled up a sequence of wins at Perth and Sedgefield, netting around £16K and showing marked improvement for each run. Mark ruined? Well, it contested a listed race today at Gowran, finishing 2nd and probably running to a mark of about 135. Another 6K in the bank, but far more importantly she now has black type. So who cares about the “ruined” mark?

If I was one of the group that owns her I’d be deliriously happy!

I’m one of the group that owns the horse that was second behind her at Sedgefield. I’m less happy! Talk about bumping into one.
