I’ve not been this excited about a race in Ireland since the Fabulous Light Vs Coolmore fisticuffs.
That one was more than just a race much like this one, but a STS victory will mean much more to me than the simple oneupmanship of back then

This is about good old genuine class vs cold, boring pragmatism….and possibly the false dawn of another ‘lightening quick’ coolmore stallion, god forbid

FAG’s pacemakers had better not follow FAG to stud….they might jump in first, leaving the poor sod with sloppy seconds or thirds….or fourths for that matter.
It’s all they know for christ’s sake.
August 26, 2009 at 13:55 #245863I reckon there is virtually no chance of STS turning up, its been raining here for a month and the long range forecast for next week is rain every day

Good, keep it coming.
August 26, 2009 at 15:56 #245876Interesting point by Nick Mordin today. Only horses to win more than 4 Group 1s in a row in the past 14 years are Rock of Gibraltar, Giant’s Causeway, Duke of Marmalade and Dylan Thomas – all trained by O’Brien.
I must say I do find it extremely strange that Oxx ran him in the Juddmonte knowing that Fame And Glory would be waiting to take him on in his main objective for the season. Surely would have made far more sense either running him in the King George or even the Marois.

Of course it would Z and I’ve said it often enough. It could be Kinane has said he might not get the trip in a true run race or that he feels 1m2f is perfect for him. Oxx’s is job is to make sure he doesn’t get beat and so far he’s done exactly that.
Will be a big plus for AOB is the rain stops play, then big question must be will we ever se Sea the Stars again?
August 26, 2009 at 16:42 #245887I rang Leapardstown this morning after last nights rain its offically Good To Soft Soft in Places.
The forecast is for no further rain until Saturday and a dry windy day on Friday so hopefully the going will be back to Good at Least by The start of the weekend.
Unlike many racecourses Leapardstown is on a hill and has the best drainage system going as it rarely turns up worse that Soft in the summer.
Lets hope we get the great match up

With STS trading at 13/8 on Betfair (11/10 FAG), we might never see him again anyway?
August 26, 2009 at 17:23 #245898Aidan O’Brien won’t exactly be crying buckets if Sea The Stars is non runner. Easy pay day for all at Coolmore.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
August 26, 2009 at 17:44 #245902I think AOB would be distraught if STS doesnt run.
He knows he made a cock up at Epsom…he knows how he can beat him…and i think the fact that Fame + Glory took a break is to prepare to take STS on in this race.
People think it will be a easy win for Coolmore but they know that if they win without STS it will pose more questions than answers….afterall Breeders can read the form book too no matter what AOB PR SPIN he puts on the animal
August 26, 2009 at 17:48 #245904Also whats the point of winning the race if the best horses dont show….its prob the best 1m2f race in Europe as history shows.
Beating Casual Conquest and the rest of the Rags from the British Isles wont be any great achievement.
Pray that he shows up for the good of the game

AOB has had two real shots at Sea the Stars and failed both times.
Murtagh said Fame and Glory had improved when he won that terrible race in Ireland and maybe he has but to drop back to 1m2f and try and beat Sea the Stars at his own game? I doubt if in top class he’s that versatile and the trip wouldn’t suit him as much as the 1m4f on g/s or soft in the Arc would.
The best thing that could happen is if StS misses it, F+G wins this hands down and has a nice easy race before the big one. I’m pretty sure AOB isn’t that obsessed with beating StS as if he wins this and the Arc F+G’s shed value will go through the roof anyway. If he had a hard race lost to Sea the Stars and didn’t recover and lost in the Arc he’d be worth a damn site less.
August 26, 2009 at 21:51 #245951If he beats STS what would his value be?
Breeders arent stupid….there going to breed from the best racehorse with the best tempremant etc….STS win that hands down especially with his Form over various trips and in the biggest races. His pedigree is far ahead of the other 3 Ballydoyle animals
STS will be used everytime ahead of RVW/Master/F+G
So Coolmore cant beat him in the Pedigree side of things so they have to try and beat him on the racetrack and that is proving very hard indeed.
If they can crack that nut its worth a fortune….if they dont the breeding line will grow and grow for STS.
Especially now that Coolmore that have a Huge amount of Top Class Stallions already at there disposal….there not going to let a chance like this slip away.
For the record i think F+G would face a impossible task if the ground was good to firm. He just doesnt seem to quicken nearly enough to take on this animal over 1m2f
August 26, 2009 at 22:13 #245964I’m probably totally wrong about this but, when, after the Juddmonte John Oxx said that it would be the last time that STS would run in this country for some reason I just thought to myself..he’s going for the Breeders Cup and that’s it…not sure what made me think it, though.

It dosent matter what the odds are mate, it’s the market depth. STS might be those odds, but you won’t get much money on it. Some people lay good odds but lay very little money on it, in the hope that the next person lays a good bit of money at a higher price so they can snap it up.
I backed F&G myself. The ammount of money laid on a horse is more indicative of what’s happening, as opposed to the odds themself. You no doubt knew that anyway.
August 27, 2009 at 02:31 #246020Looking at the weather forecast tonight the chances of ground without some "soft" in it look remote. Pity, as I’d back Sea The Stars to beat Fame and Glory at this trip even on good to soft. Ironically he’d be more likely to get his ground at Doncaster where he’d surely win without breaking sweat, despite the trip.
August 27, 2009 at 03:04 #246023They’re forecasting an improvement in the weather for the middle of next week so fingers crossed Oxx might yet give him the green light.
August 27, 2009 at 06:21 #246042So will STS run if it’s good to soft/good in places? or even somewhere in between, perhaps?

Is Oxx making too much of his only defeat on his debut (heavy) or does the horse simply work like a pig on anything the softer side of good?
I always thought Cape Cross progeny went on the ground, myself, and the dam side generally handled it too, so what’s all the flipping fuss?
