April 8, 2017 at 12:18 #1296033My last was Red Marauder 2001. Used to get winner regularly. Rarely get a horse placed now.
1986, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2001.
Then, zip all. Different race now of course.
April 8, 2017 at 12:27 #1296036Ginger has had the winner every year since 1958 before then he only used to back 2/3rds of the field
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 8, 2017 at 12:32 #1296038Earth Summit was my last winner. I managed to back Red Marauder and Mon Mome the year before they won. I still can’t get over Beau falling when there were only three horses left in Red Marauders race.
April 8, 2017 at 12:56 #1296046The only winner I’ve ever had was Comply Or Die. Had placed horses in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2015.
It’s about time…
BlueSky @pghenn.bsky.social
So don't run, just like the others always do
April 8, 2017 at 12:58 #1296047Used to be on a 6 year cycle:
1994 Miinnehoma
2000 Papillon
2006 Numbersixvalverde
2012 Neptune CollongesBut then I spoilt it by having Pineau de Re in 2014
So no great expectation this year, not due yet…
April 8, 2017 at 13:05 #12960511977: Red Rum (Family sweepstake)
1981: Aldaniti (I’ll include him as I was the bookie at school and for some reason missed him out of my book)
1983: Corbiere (I’ll include him although couldn’t get anyone to put the money on for me)
1984: Coriere ew placed (Hallo Dandy’s year)
1986: West Tip (backed one horse ew, first legal National winner, tipped it to the baker – free bread for a week)
1987: West Tip ew placed
1988: West Tip ew placed
1990: Mr Frisk 33/1 ante-post
1994: Miinnehoma 16/1
1998: Earth Summit 12/1
1999: Bobbyjoe 14/1 (backed the first 4 home)
2001: The one that got away, had Beau one of the last to unseat, Smarty 2nd to Red Marauder)
2002: Bindaree 25/1
The wilderness years… Plenty of places, but if I had a winner it was only a saver bet (don’t rememebr it)
2012: Neptune Collonges 50/1 down to 33’s
2013: Aurora’s Encore 119/1 (had the 2nd and 3rd ante-post)
2014: Pineau De Ree 33/1 (only a saver) Balthazar King would’ve been better.
2015: Many Clouds 40/1 (just a saver) Saint Are would’ve been better.
2016: The Last Samuri a place (to get back what I lost on win bets, if only he’d won, bloody Mouse Morris)!
2017: Definitely Red 16/1 ew, Blaklion 16/1 win, Vieux Lion Rouge 16/1 win, The Last Samuri 12/1 to 24/1 win, Drop Out Joe 74/1 and 66/1 (£0.11 @ 169/1), but the biggest bets are Definitely Red 6/1 and The Last Samuri 5/1 both for a place.I’ve found the Grand National is the race that’s won me more money than any other over the years.
Value Is EverythingApril 8, 2017 at 13:12 #1296056I still can’t believe The Thinker didn’t win this.
Miinnehoma, Maori Venture, Monty’s Pass and Many Clouds are my only winners. Suppose I have to pick a horse beginning with M then! That’s More of That and Measureofmydreams. They were both on my very long list, but didn’t make the cut. Suppose I’ll be backing losers again today.
Note, I am one of those guys who backs two in this race at most. Looking forward to seeing the pro punters on twitter and online claim they had the winner of the race, which they tipped in February, without reminding us that they also tipped another fifteen horses since then and that the winner wasnt in their four they lead their columns with this morning.
April 8, 2017 at 13:19 #1296060Ginger has had the winner every year since 1958 before then he only used to back 2/3rds of the field
I back the same number of horses TAPK does Nathan, difference is mine usually run.
Value Is EverythingApril 8, 2017 at 13:53 #1296071To be fair, I only ever back one, win-only. My closest effort since Wham! was McKelvey rather unfortunately running lame when 2nd to Silver Birch.
Most winners are pretty much in the first 4 or 5 that I rule out.

Nothing wrong with backing just one horse Mike, you’ll naturally have fewer winners but won’t need many. Before 1999 it was very unusual for me to bet more than one and to be fair, if adding up percentages of all the horses I backed the year Neptunes Collonge won it came to taking a combined 11/10 I’d have the winner (with unequal stakes, adding up all stakes compared to amount won it came to around 6/1 if memory serves) Neptune was very much my number one bet. If only I’d backed just the one horse! It sounds as though you only need one winner in 33 to make a profit, Mike. Normal losing run sequences mean it’s not surprising you haven’t had the winner since 1984.

April 9, 2017 at 00:48 #1296151I had a bit of beginner’s luck with Comply or Die and more recently Many Clouds. Alvarado placed twice too. Not being a big punter I’m probably in front on the race. It’s the other races that are the problem
April 9, 2017 at 01:30 #1296154My winners have been:-
1979 Rubstic
1980 No bet
1081 No bet
1982 No Bet
1985 West Tip fell second Bechers cantering at the time
1986 West Tip (My biggest ever National Bet)
1988 Rhyme And Reason win and Durham Edition E/W, other bet Sacred Path fell at first.
1990 Mr Frisk
1991 Seagram
1992 Party Politics
1996 Rough Quest (third biggest national bet)
1997 Lord Gyllene (Backed him early doors at 8/1 then again on the day at an incredidle late SP in the Monday National)
1998 Earth Summit (Also backed Suny Bay to the same stake in my second biggest national bet) 1-2 finishStopped working in betting shops at this point and it showed. Backed Hedgehunter in 2004 only for him to tire and fall. Then, finally back on track:-
2005 Hedgehunter
Then my worst drought ever, only a couple of seconds before:-
2015 Many Clouds (Ante Post at 40/1)
2016 Second with The Last Samuri at 33/1 ante post
2017 One For Arthur 20/1 ante-post, punted on the day the weights were published.I generally do three horses in the National, sometimes less and occasionally four but never more than that. There were periods during 2000-2010 where I didn’t look at the horses much due to family health matters and depression. It definitely helps if you follow the game and don’t have distractions but it’s a race where you need some luck as well.
Overall it’s been a good race for me.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 9, 2017 at 01:51 #1296156I’ve had:
2 players – Saint Are and The Last samuri in 2015 and 2016
The latter I’m adamant would’ve won that on better ground
First winner was this year
April 9, 2017 at 10:31 #1296194A race I’ve had few bets in and don’t recall any for 10+ years, so no surprise I’ve never bet the winner
Anglo in 1966 was the ‘family gathered round t’box’ pick, chosen, if memory serves, because I was an avid collector of Anglo Confectionary Gum Cards
My father went crazy in 1980 and put a bluey on Ben Nevis, as we had climbed the mountain a couple of years previously: isn’t that how one is supposed to punt the National?
I suggested to a lady friend yesterday, whose dearly beloved has been playing away, that she back Rogue Angel. I was ready for the slap but got a laugh: good for her
April 10, 2017 at 15:38 #1296385Might as well put mine up, and sad enough to remember all of mine. Here they are (roughly) for the record……..
First few years, up to 1990, were just “picks” as I were just a lad, and my mum and dad already had their concerns about me from a young age, and my obsession with racing, and The National in particular. They wouldn’t even let me have 50p on, in the hope of discouraging me. It didn’t work

1979 Artistic Prince – Fell 27th
1980 Rubstic – Fell Chair
1981 Tenecoon – Fell 10th
1982 Artistic Prince – Fell 1st
1983 Venture to Cognac – 8th
1984 Two Swallows – 6th
1985 Solihull Sport – Fell 1st
1986 Acarine – Brought Down
1987 The Ellier – 7th
1988 Repington – Refused
1989 Bob Tisdall – Refused
1990 Uncle Merlin – Unseated RiderI then had a great start to my betting career with Seagram and Party Politics my first ever bets. I went from the 91 National to when the weights came out in 92 before having another bet. At this stage I quickly started up a habit of one bet when the weights came out, and one bet on the day. Seagram, Ante-Post, my first bet, and it won, and the same story with Party Politics. Little did I know I would go 20 years before getting the winner again, and plenty of first fence fallers too.
The following, my Ante-Post bets when the weights came out, and also a bet on the day, sometimes the same horse.
1991 Seagram Won
1992 Party Politics Won
1993 Not that it matters, but Joyful Noise – Refused
1994 Run For Free – “Carried Out” Just So – 2nd
1995 Deep Bramble (NR) Lusty Light – Fell 1st
1996 Deep Bramble – Pulled Up Antonin – Unplaced
1997 Naathen Lad (both) Unplaced
1998 Him Of Praise – Refused Banjo – Fell 1st
1999 Hanakham – NR Coome Hill – Last
2000 Earthmover Fell
2001 Smarty 2nd
2002 Ackzo – Pulled Up Inn At The Top Fell 1st
2003 Shotgun Willy – Pulled Up Ballinclay King – Pulled Up
2004 Be My Manager NR Takagi – Unseated Rider
2005 Colnel Rayburn Pulled Up
2006 Inca Trail – 8th Colnel Rayburn – Pulled Up
2007 Monkerhostin – Refused Liberthine – 5th
2008 Character Building NR Philson Run – Brought Down
2009 State Of Play (both) 4th
2010 Maljimar – Fell The Package – Unseated RiderGets a bit messy about now, I’ve disovered Betfair, and there are bets all over the place. This is roughly the main Ante-Post fancy, and day of race fancy. I would probably have to check old threads on here to remember other ones I really liked.
2011 Roll Along NR State of Play 4th
2012 Seabass (both) 3rd
2013 Call The Police NR Imperial Commander – Unplaced
2014 Double Seven – 3rd Last Time D’Albain – Brought Down
2015 Cause of Causes – unplaced, Ely Brown Fell 1st
2016 Cause of Causes NR, Vics Canvas 3rd
2017 Cause of Causes 2nd
, Rogue Angel unplacedSeabass in 2012, and Cause of Causes this year, were big winners for me just placing, and I had Neptune Collonges, and Rule The World, but they were part of a “book”, and weren’t main fancies, either on the day, or Ante-Post.
Feel a bit sad listing all them, but always good to see the old names, and also see how many times I got it badly wrong haha.
