I see Mr Johnson believes the ‘grass’ might be a member or ex-member of his stable-staff – odd that they would know a Neurectomy was against the rules when their boss did not.
(Given Mr Johnson’s bemoaning of his catalogue of misfortunes, he might have a phonetic interpretation of the ill-conceived operation: a ‘new wreck to me’)
August 14, 2011 at 16:37 #368056After what happened to Henderson’s vet I am amazed another would try such a scheme.
August 14, 2011 at 20:03 #368078I’m slightly concerned about the timeframe in which the BHA :
– received the tip-off
– Striking Article’s racecourse appearance(s)
– the tragic Musselburgh race
– the instruction to carry out a post-mortem
– the post-mortemI mean, surely the BHA could not have received the tip-off (regarding the neurectomy) whilst the horse was in training?
Could they…….

Precisely,
Andyod
. the striking off of James Main
pour encourager les autres
by his own professional body will do far more to remind vets of their ethical responsibility than any amount of "licensing" and virtual red tape could ever do.
August 14, 2011 at 22:24 #368093I think it’s a great pity that a trainer such as Howard Johnson would even resort to treating one of his horses this way. To me, and I’m sure many other people – what he did was tantamount to cruelty, and he has done the right thing by announcing his retirement. I consider the 4 year ban to have been rather lenient in the first place – it should have been a life ban.
Hopefully the message will now get through to all trainers; treat your horses badly and you will get severely punished.

August 15, 2011 at 06:55 #368105I think it would be interesting to know how
long the bha had been tipped off about the
neurectamy?August 15, 2011 at 08:24 #368110The key phrase in the BHA statement is the tip off is dealt with in accordance with the National Intelligence Model, which is a complex but generally effective way of prioritising intelligence information.
Without knowing specific detail of the intelligence they received on Johnson and knowing what the other 300-400 items of intelligence coming in each month are, it is invidious to criticise them for any possible delay. (and of course it would defeat the object of the intelligence system if the BHA were to reveal that information)
Unless it was accompanied by some compelling evidence, it is highly unlikely one single item of intelligence would result in an immediate investigation being launched, otherwise anybody with a grudge could easily cause trouble for somebody they do not like. Also bear in mind no investigative unit will have unlimited resources, so prioritisation will be inevitable.
The important factor must be the intelligence, whatever that may have been, was acted upon and a "satisfactory" result was achieved.
August 15, 2011 at 11:33 #368119But surely if the bha had recieved intelligance
that a potentialy dangerous horse was being
entered in to races they should have acted
immediatly, not wait for the horse to be put
down so a ortopsy could be performedAugust 15, 2011 at 12:05 #368126But surely if the bha had recieved intelligance
that a potentialy dangerous horse was being
entered in to races they should have acted
immediatly, not wait for the horse to be put
down so a ortopsy could be performedIf the BHA acted on all tip offs of such things they’d get inundated with made up stories of "potentially dangerous horses", by anyone with a grudge against a trainer.
In this case Howard Johnson has nothing to complain about. Retirement? He knows he would not be let back in if wanting to reapply for a license. Authorities have done a good job, although he has got off lightly with just 4 years (in my opinion).
Value Is EverythingAugust 15, 2011 at 12:40 #368131Did they get his age right? I was astonished; if he is only 58 he must have had a pretty hard life. He looks more than 10 years older!
August 15, 2011 at 12:58 #368135I would imagine that most tip offs the bha recieve are
around betting patterns, drugs, horses stopped etc,I dont
think they recieve many tip offs saying"that horse can’t feel its
foot!" what concerns me is if the bha had this tip off several
months/years before the horse was put down they were happy to let
jockeys ride it in races. To me they should have gone to the yard and seen the horse immedietly.August 15, 2011 at 17:18 #368157Probably a result of looking after Tidal Bay for so many years. Bet they can’t wait to have him at the Nicholls yard. Lads and lasses will be drawing straws to decide who will be looking after him.
August 15, 2011 at 18:24 #368161Lot of ifs and buts there magic.
We don’t know the intelligence the BHA received, when they received it or how it was acted so so all the conspiracy theories about BHA activity are no more than that.
August 15, 2011 at 22:05 #368205At the risk of sounding kinda shallow, what I can – will – must – say is Back In Focus, trained by Willie Mullins, running in Irish Novice Chases, in the mud is something that really, really excites me.

August 15, 2011 at 23:27 #368221From what I’ve read on some news sites, the trainer did not know/believe the horse was being hurt.
I think the sentence was too harsh and NH has lost a first-rate trainer who I don’t think would want to see any horse suffer.

August 16, 2011 at 06:14 #368235can’t quite see the conspiracy,they obviously had
the tipp off before the horse was put down, its a simple
question of how long.August 16, 2011 at 06:46 #368239"I think the sentence was too harsh and NH has lost a first-rate trainer who I don’t think would want to see any horse suffer."
Could that be why he was at another track when the horse broke down? - AuthorPosts
