…. posing a real threat to the Cheltenham and other Spring NH Festivals?
I’d say I’m at around 20% at the moment. You can’t say it’s zero, but a thing a small threat might be there. Maybe not for Cheltenham, but what about Aintree and the rest?
Any thoughts?
February 27, 2020 at 19:52 #1484059Not very and probably less than your 20%. It will need Premier League fixtures to be postponed before I start worrying about Cheltenham.
The Italy v Ireland abandonment just sent a few people crazy
February 27, 2020 at 20:05 #1484064It will come in handy when queued up at the back of the bar
I’ll just start coughing loudly and say “that’s the worst its been since I got back from China”Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 28, 2020 at 01:09 #1484082Price is 1.45 to go ahead, I wonder if it’s that big because people are hedging as a coverup
February 28, 2020 at 06:52 #1484086I am getting concerned about it because the media seems to be getting in a frenzy about it despite nothing serious happening here yet. On Question Time last night, one of the panelists kept calling it a “pandemic” although it has not been declared as such.
On RTV yesterday, Ruby Walsh suggested the Festival might go ahead behind closed doors if large gatherings are prohibited.
February 28, 2020 at 09:48 #1484093This is already happening in Italy where football matches are being staged behind closed doors.
February 28, 2020 at 10:17 #1484096I really do think that could happen if this slightly hysterical climate continues.
From a selfish point of view it makes no difference to me. I never go to the Festival because I struggle with large, noisy crowds – but if I had booked to go I would be getting a bit nervous now.
I expect plenty of hotels, pubs and restaurants in the Cheltenham area are getting a bit worried as well.
February 28, 2020 at 10:57 #1484100I’m afraid it will be cancelled, or at least held without spectators.
February 28, 2020 at 13:33 #1484110That’s because there’s a huge outbreak in Italy.
There’s no such thing here and it’ll take a while for a large outbreak to occur as it can incubate for two weeks before showing signs in people – Just enough time for Cheltenham to start and finish

Definitely a chance, but agree with Cork it’s more due to the Media blowing it out of proportion and government bending backwards to please the GP than an actual issue.
February 28, 2020 at 21:23 #1484158I think the threat is just getting bigger from day to day. Right now, I’d take a Festival with no spectators.
February 28, 2020 at 22:11 #1484162Just seen Jeremy Hunt, Chair of the Health Select Committee, say that sporting events may have to be cancelled. Why would a senior politician say that unless it was seriously being considered by the government?
I have gone from being a bit worried to quite concerned.
February 28, 2020 at 22:21 #1484168How would a Festival without spectators look like? Just trainers, jockeys, stable staff and vets on the course? Or also owners and journalists?
The more people you have on the track, the more risks you’re taking. You’d want everybody to be healthy for the above mentioned Spring Festivals and also try to avoid negative consequences for the beginning Flat season.
February 28, 2020 at 22:29 #1484170Such an overreaction to a resp virus, should be going about as normal, media will control what happens, like kevs said, long incubation period, hopefully will get us through until the inevitable happens.
February 28, 2020 at 22:31 #1484171wouldnt be without spectators, too many stable staff etc from up and down the country, it would definitely be canceled as opposed to behind closed doors
February 28, 2020 at 22:50 #1484174The problem is that when you cancel the Festival, you’d have to cancel race meetings every day. Why would it be safer when it’s only 5,000 racegoers instead of 50,000?
As long as they don’t cancel smaller meetings they won’t cancel Cheltenham. But, it’s just a guess.
February 28, 2020 at 23:27 #1484182I’d only start getting worried if they start postponing premier league football matches
That will be the first domino to fall and the rest will follow
February 29, 2020 at 00:09 #1484193It’s no worse than the flu virus and, I’m not a medical person but hopefully it will burn itself out naturally very soon.
Start cancelling sporting events and you might as well shut down all the Theatres, Department Stores, Pubs and nightclubs, Museums it goes on and on until we find ourselves just sitting isolated and alone on a cube with a circle drawn around us 6 foot away from the next person.
