Start cancelling sporting events and you might as well shut down all the Theatres, Department Stores, Pubs and nightclubs, Museums it goes on and on
Yep in the 4 days of the Cheltenham Festival there will have been approximately 20 million passenger journeys on the London tube, mixing people from all over the globe in a much more confined space than the fresh Prestbury air. So what’s the point.
February 29, 2020 at 13:26 #1484250Two Meetings at Compiegne (Monday and Wednesday) will take place behind closed doors. It is 100% certain to happen in GB/IRE as well, maybe not too soon, but I think it’s getting very likely from day to day.
February 29, 2020 at 15:21 #1484265France have banned all gatherings over 5000 and have taken a more extreme outlook, its inevitable its going to happen here to some extent but putting this on behind closed doors isnt going to do anything unless we had sudden outbreaks left and right
Only negative i seen today is the man coming back from italy (from gloucester) has it, theyll close down certain areas and hopefully he hasnt done too much since he got back and its contained…
Still just a flu but obviously its being viewed differently…
Like someone above said, if football games start getting played behind closed doors then that would be the only chance this happens,
February 29, 2020 at 18:13 #1484282Personally I don’t see it would make a lot of diffence if they cancelled the meeting.
You might as well close supermarkets, send all kids away from school, no congregations
in church etc etc. I mean what next, tell people not to go into work
The
country would grind to a halt. All that the government/medical profession can resonably do to is give advice to people
to take common sense precautions, such as proper hand washing and obviously if you find
yourself in the company of someone coughing or not feeling well then make a swift retreat.
Be responsible for yourself, cover you mouth when coughing, use a hankie if you sneeze and
stay indoors if you have symptoms. Basically do what you would do for flu, which according
to reports kills on average 17,000 people a year in England alone. At the moment the percentage
of people dying from the coronavirus, about 1%, is not a lot different to annual flu. Hopefully
this will run it’s course like other flu viruses.February 29, 2020 at 18:51 #1484286One little thing that I do when going to the supermarket is to take anti bac wipes with me and use them on the trolley/basket handle and if you use the scanner to shop give that a good wipe as well.

I saw an old gent hovering around the fresh fruit and veg last week coughing and blowing his nose into a big spotty hanky waving it about before he stuffed it in his pocket. That’s probably one of the ways the latest coronavirus germs were spread to the man who had not visited one of the category 1 countries.

If we all take a little care hopefully we can do our bit to help stop this spreading and help save our sports and other social gatherings.
I really hope Cheltenham goes ahead.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...February 29, 2020 at 20:09 #1484292Sipping water regularly helps. As does gargling [at home, obviously; wouldn’t look too good in a supermarket]. I’ve got a cold and flu defence nasal spray that I bought for a holiday once; have got a new one to use when I go out. Wondering what will happen about Crufts next week; a far more international event than Cheltenham I would imagine. It would be strange if Cheltenham did go ahead but with no spectators because it was one of the first things that I thought about but didn’t mention it to anyone because, at the time it seemed like such a crazy idea and everyone would think I was bonkers. I do wonder if it will change a lot of things in the future, especially with the criticism of so much unnecessary air travel. More international conferences being held online; virtual reality stuff with which to watch international sporting events. It’ll be interesting to see what is decided at the ‘urgent’ [so urgent that they waited several days to hold it] meeting on Monday.
February 29, 2020 at 20:27 #1484294Bigger question is whether this forum will continue after half the posters have been wiped out
February 29, 2020 at 21:09 #1484299Well, with all the draconian measures I’ve put in place I’ll survive and shall still be here talking to myself. I will re name it ‘the aftertiming forum’.
March 2, 2020 at 10:47 #1484414The betting on if it will go ahead has gone from 1.92 to 1.52 on the exchange in the last couple of hours
Might be a good sign
March 2, 2020 at 15:55 #14844241.35 now
March 3, 2020 at 15:05 #14845044 new cases in the UK yesterday brought number of cases from 36 to 40; 11 new cases today bring it to 51. What do you reckon the magic number is before drastic measures are taken? I’m sorry for being a negative nelly but I cant see the festival going ahead; I just cant. Italy had 400 cases last week and they now have over 2,000 cases. I think Paddy’s Day will be cancelled in Ireland; London Marathon will most likely be chawked off as well.
I’m not usually a negative person; but I just cant focus on preview videos or tips or any of the races – this thing really has me spooked. If Cheltenham was this week I think we might have got away with it but I really think we are now days away from drastic action being taken by the UK government.
March 3, 2020 at 15:11 #1484506And by the way I do realise the above is an attention seeking insecure post. I really want someone to put their arms around me and tell me everything’s going to be ok..
March 3, 2020 at 15:29 #1484507I think it is going to be OK now. The government has said it has no plans to ban mass gatherings. If they wanted something like Cheltenham to be stopped they would have done so by now.
It is 1-5 that it goes ahead and I think that is about right.
March 3, 2020 at 15:38 #1484509I’d say the Grand National is more likely to be affected by all this than Cheltenham. All concerned will bend over backwards to see that next week will go ahead as planned. Whereas they’d probably bend over backwards to cancel the National if given the chance.
March 3, 2020 at 16:51 #1484513Will be fine now vautour, they have pretty much came out and told us to wash our hands and sing happy birthday lol…. i doubt within a week theyll be saying dont leave the house and avoid anything and everything
I agrre with peter, things will be cancelled thats a definite, but its likely to be wnd of march and april
March 3, 2020 at 17:01 #1484515Vatour; I know exactly what you mean. I’ve not taken the same interest in Cheltenham this year, partly because I’m not going for the first time in many years which made me feel a bit flat. Then the virus made me blank the festival out a bit . So I’m now looking forward to looking forward to it again only this time, as a terrible hypochondriac, relieved that I’m not going. I’d hope that the National could go ahead even if behind closed doors, which would be better than nothing. It would be awful for those long distance chasers to lose the chance to win a race like the National. A race behind closed doors would actually add to the history of the race imo, along with the race that never was and the bomb scare one given that it is a sporting event that often mirrors social/political events.
