Hi team,
Looking forward to Wednesday at the sandpit and judging by the people I spoke to today, so is everyone else. We really were down to the completists and obsessives this afternoon.
Congratulations to the BHA for something fresh and innovative.
In order to protect my son’s inheritance, what should I be looking for when hunting down the six winners? Anyone on the forum specialise in bumpers?
Paddock inspection? Breeding? Market moves? P2P form? Trainer patterns?
Genuine query from someone who can count his bumper bets on the fingers of one hand.

Pedigree analysis is always an important part of evaluating bumpers – a bumper or hurdle-winning relation is always nice to see – but I tend to stick to five basic principles:
1. Experience is worth its weight in gold
2. Penalties are difficult to concede, even for decent horses
3. Trainers with poor bumper records should be avoided
4. Trainers with good bumper records at the course should be watched
5. Market moves in relation to points 3 and 4 can be extremely informativeFailing that, join Paul in the miserable corner with your hands in your pockets

It may be the miserable corner but it keeps the money in my pocket not the bookies.

Joking aside, I fully agree with your suggestions – in relation to the first point I like runners who have winning pointing form, especially Irish pointing – they can often be very overpriced.
As an example Michael Scudamore’s Silly Wupple made its bumper debut at Aintree, having some winning pointing form which was ignored by the layers, it romped home at 50/1 over 100/1 on the Nanny.
January 10, 2010 at 17:34 #269154A great punting medium because
1. Shrewdies ignore them
2. The betting shop have no form to on so just guess on them
3. Insiders frequently overestimate their horses in themWill put up a few stat pointers when I can
January 10, 2010 at 20:39 #269181I would go there with the intention of finding six winners for the future.
I went through the breeding of the newcomers earlier and nothing particularly jumped off the page. Obviously, if money talks Hobsons Bay will be worth a look if it takes up an entry. I liked the look of Line Freedom last year but she would be short and her form is relatively weak. It is rare for a Henderson bumper runner not to be a standout in the paddock. Dances With Waves is nicely bred but didn’t show much on her only start.
Bit surprised at the lack of Alan King entries?
January 10, 2010 at 21:15 #269195Apart from the obvious of backing the ones from the Nicholls, Hendersons and Kings and the like, one thing I’ve always done with bumpers is looked for market movers and horses from ‘unfashionable’ yards that are shorter in the market than you would think they are.
If it wasn’t for bumpers I would have a different username. It kind of fits into what I now look for now. It was quite a few years ago now, I was given the horse Zamorston and told to have a few quid on e/w and make sure I took the first available price.
It was trained by Steve ‘knocker’ Norton and having it’s first run. I went down the local bookies and when the market opened up I dived straight in with a fiver e/w and took the 33/1 it opened up at, within about 3 minutes it had been backed down to 10/1 so I was feeling pretty good about the info.
All I can remember about the race is that it was poor visibility and the commentator didn’t have much of a clue what was going on, but a couple of furlongs out Zamorston came from knowhere and quickly put the race to bed and won by 15 lengths!
If only I could back em like that a bit more often!
January 10, 2010 at 21:30 #269199Come on now, guys! We’re talking about bumper horses running on the all-weather aren’t we? Horses that have probably had little work for the past three weeks? Many of whom will be nowhere near the top of their game?
Lots of them will detest the kick-back?
Look, if you really want to throw your money away, please just put it in an envelope and send it to me. Better still, take a trip to your local museum and have a good look in the Egyptian section because you’ll see more life from the mummies than you will from these bumper races.
KJanuary 10, 2010 at 21:54 #269203I’m glad there’s a topic on this, because I was thinking of starting one.
I’m signing in, and am going to have a go at the Placepot. Haven’t done one for 24 years, since I worked in a betting shop.
Only had a bet in about a dozen or so bumper races before, but one thing I like to look at are the Sales details on the RP site, but maybe that’s because I’m a nosy bugger.

KAnswer me this, there are horses running in these races right? There’ll still be one that passes the post first?
As the answer to both of those questions is yes, it’s still more than possible to pick winners.
Of course, I’m saying that now. Ask me again after the event!
January 10, 2010 at 23:18 #269218Do horses get ratings for these races? What I’m trying to say is, are there horses in the races that need to do well/win so they can compete in other races ie get a handicap rating or something?

I wouldn’t have thought so. I’d imagine the next level for the runners in these bumpers would be novice hurdling.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

As I understand it Bumpers are restricted to horses that have not run on the Flat (though not vice-versa) and the ‘ratings’ they achieve in these ‘public schools’ do not contribute to a handicap mark, which is awarded after the obligatory three runs in novice/maiden hurdles, or more rarely in novice/maiden/beginners chases if sent straight over fences.
A novel and fun idea to run such a card.
Probably had fewer bets on Bumpers than you Max, so can’t offer any advice other than expect to see horses twice the size you’re used to taking twice as long to complete a circuit

There will be lots have fun to bee had, a lot of money won and a lot more lost in these races but why hasn’t someone come up with the idea before.
I’m not going to try be the judge on whether people should bet and or not. The results will be up and down like all bumper races but could be more in the favour of the punter if some of the fields are smaller than is usual.
January 12, 2010 at 22:11 #269545I find it funny that it is a seven race card; which one is the extra bumper, added to the six proper races?
January 12, 2010 at 22:24 #269548I’ve never tried to access this facility before; how does one access on the RP site, info about how far horses have travelled? I thought this would be the best way to find those from N’ket, as apparently the Jockey Club have done a good job at keeping the gallops open.
