I think in my mind i reconcile it with they are well trained ,a lot of time and effort is put into them and the fact the vast majority get out the gane alive . With their training and attitude they also have a better chance of a new life compared to say a fizzy but slow 2 year old .
The other thing , a race like the Golden Slipper in OZ how many young horses get cooked mentally and physically trying to ram through a prep to get there .February 3, 2024 at 22:46 #1679701Shocking and upsetting as it is, I can cope with death as a result of a catastrophic fall more easily than a “breakdown” or collapse. Falls are, sadly, part of jump racing and, while much has been done to improve safety, and could still be done, I don’t think any measures would have prevented the accident to poor Hermes Allen.

February 3, 2024 at 23:09 #1679708I agree Tonge, it’s awful to lose a horse in any circumstances but it seems more bearable when they go quickly as in this case, than some of the horrendous losses we’ve seen recently with legs breaking on take off or on the flat.
I think more needs to be done to collate and research information on the catastrophic injuries that occur that are not the result of jumping falls.February 3, 2024 at 23:20 #1679710Nicholls had the perfect horse for this race, but I was wondering whether the Sandown fences in the straight have become more difficult to jump.
You don’t see many falls or unseats at the final two Sandown fences. I always thought after the Pond the jumping is done. But somehow today a lot of decent horses had problems at the two fences in the straight. The ground was rather quick on the Chase Course (compared to the Hurdles Course), but still very decent for NH Racing. In fact, Hermes Allen fell a stride after landing and had no chance of minimizing the damage. - AuthorPosts
