Ruby for chases, McCoy for hurdles.. McCoy’s agression seems to work a bit better over the hurdles for me. Ruby’s balance and tactical judgement make him the better chase jockey
November 16, 2006 at 16:34 #30958ofcourse there are going to be top and bottom performers in any sport, but just because ruby or mccoy ride win a race, doesnt mean the other horses lost because the jocks are rubbish. i just think to much emphasis is on the jocks
November 16, 2006 at 20:23 #30959Speculative, but Kasthari, at a price. Inconsistent, but seemed to be improving over fences. Longer distance will suit.
Not that far behind Millenary and Sergeant Cecil on the flat.

No, it doesn’t mean that the jocks that didn’t win rode poor races but equally there are many occasions where a horse should arguably have won if given a better ride. There are certain jockeys riding that actually make me think twice about backing a horse, even if I fancy it strongly. Cornish Rebel in the GC is a case in point – Tizzard gave him a diabolical ride and IMO contributed in no small way to him ploughing through the fence he did, ending his chance in the race. I’m just hoping and praying that someone else gets the ride in the Hennessy as I don’t think my nerves could stand it otherwise! That said, my main hopes rest on Montegermont having had a fair bit more on him than on Cornish Rebel.
Also, FYI – I’ve ridden/jumped/hunted/competed horses, ridden work/in races/up the gallops several hundred times over in my life!
November 20, 2006 at 11:57 #30961Star de Mohaison doesn’t run so hopefully Ruby will be on Cornish Rebel
November 20, 2006 at 13:54 #30962I hope so!
November 20, 2006 at 17:58 #30963its such a shame the hennessy dosent attract the class horses anymore. why do so many trainers have a phobia about their horses carrying top weight? they carry almost as much in a pattern race
November 20, 2006 at 18:31 #30964my opinion is the trainers dont want to risk the reputation of the horses in a handicap because some of the ‘top’ horses might be found out in a fast run handicap. gone are the days of top horses carrying 12 stone when the rest of the field has 11 and less! its a great shame, i feel true greats cope with the weight and still perform consistently. (dessie, rooster booster)
wont see BoS or WoA or KS in a handicap!
November 20, 2006 at 18:48 #30965Are you having a laugh describing Rooster Booster as a true great? Can you tell me how many handicaps Istabraq won?
Does KS stand for Kauto Star? What race did he make his reappearance in?
November 20, 2006 at 18:58 #30966rooster booster ran consistently under big weights was my point. istabraq won no handicap hurdles if i remember rightly. we can only speculate how he would have coped in the tote gold trophey with 11-12 giving 16lb and more. maybe he would have won, but who knows. and as for kauto star, it was hardly a race, let alone a handicap first time out!!
November 21, 2006 at 22:25 #30967Can’t understand why giving weight away is rated as the sign of a good horse in NH racing
Horses like Moscow Flyer did not need to give lumps away to prove their worth.
Beating horses like Azertyuiop, Well Chief etc.etc off levels was sufficient

November 22, 2006 at 07:43 #30970Grassy,
You suggesting that Istabraq should have run in a handicap to prove his worth?

EW,
History, that’s why. Even twenty years ago, all the prize money was in handicaps and races like the Charlie Hall, the Betfair Chase, etc either didn’t exist or were run for peanuts. Go back further and that’s even more true.
So the very best horses all ran in handicaps and winning these races with top weight was the measure of class.
I was lucky enough to be present to watch the Hennessy of 1984, won by Burrough Hill Lad carrying 12st – it made a much greater impression on me than his Gold Cup win and as I remember it, that view was widely shared at the time.
The Gold Cup was important, but Cheltenham didn’t dominate the entire season in the way it does now. And the Gold Cup wasn’t worth much more than the big handicaps then either. Bit most of all, it would have been unheard of for a horse to run in the Gold Cup without having contested at least one handicap during the season.
Flat racing used to be just the same – Classic winners turned up in the Lincoln or the Cambridgeshire. But flat racing changed earlier, so that everyone alive today is used to concept of the pattern and that top horses always race outside handicaps.

November 22, 2006 at 10:41 #30972On the subject of the race, does anyone know whats going on with Innox? I read yesterday that the trainer has said he will not confirm his participation until today or tomorrow yet he was 210 on BF last night?
For me the front two in the betting are the ones, I like southern vic as well if it was really soft but it looks like he’ll run in the troytown.
Turpin Green prefers some cut looking at his record and I think is crying out for a trip. Obviously the form has been franked by Exotic Dancer but it’s his second behind star de mohaison giving him weight that makes me think he stands a good chance. The flatter tracks seem to suit.
State of Play could be anything and i’ve had a nibble but I can’t help thinking that maybe he was flattered at the end of last season as the race (Barring Lacdoudal) was not the strongest.
I can’t really raise a lot of enthusiasm for those at lower weights. If presenting express was a better jumper I might ne interested, same with Cornish Rebel who I think will find one or two to good again. Vodka Bleu has an obvious chance but i’m not sure he’ll see the trip out well enough.
Difficult race for me this one.
November 22, 2006 at 11:35 #30973Thanks for that AP, a bit clearer
Seeing horses like Detroit City beat up lesser rivals giving them weight does not really impress me, seeing Detroit City beat up similar or equal ability horses off levels does
Seeing Well Chief beat a lesser rivals in an handicap does not really impress, seeing Well Chief running within a few lengths of Moscow Flyer off levels does
