I think the fact that a hot fav was pulled up in a bumper having travelled only a few furlongs (a very rare occurance), exactly the same point when said other Henderson well fancied flop was pulled up, is being overlooked here as the original basis of my post.
June 3, 2014 at 15:33 #481029I don’t bet in bumpers these days but each to their own. I find it puzzling though, that you would back an Alan King bumper horse when they have been a bookies benefit this season?
You have to assess each race on its merits. By bumper standards this was a shocking race. The Henderson horse was no great shakes on paper so at 5/1 each-way the King horse (who had shown ability in a much better race) was a bet-to-nothing even allowing for the general unpredictability of his bumper runners this season. The fact that I didn’t have a very positive opinion of the Henderson runner beforehand didn’t mean I expected it to be effectively beaten after a few yards.

As far as the owners are concerned, Henry Ponsonby states on his website:
‘Our highly regarded newcomer in a bumper at Stratford, Caracci Apache, trained by Nicky Henderson, pulled up and was never going, which was a big disappointment to all concerned as on his home work he seems above average. We have to draw a line through this race.’
