Interesting, in the King George Harbinger’s tongue was lolling out.
He was definitely
laughing out loud
at something

I think I’ve heard it all now…. Pacemakers put in to ensure there’s no pace…..Genius!
I like to think Stoute would have that
move covered, for christ’s sake! Ten and a half furlongs of York run at a decent pace would be no inconvenience whatsoever for Harbinger – he’s hardly a tree.

Take a look at this.

The two Ballydoyle pacemakers let the Maktoum pacemaker go to the front then both jockeys slam the brakes on to slow down the main group and isolate the Maktoum pacemaker. So yes, pacemakers can be used to slow the pace.
Of course they can also be ignored, whether there to quicken or slow the pace.August 1, 2010 at 07:45 #310344

This is typical SMS smart thinking. If Harbinger can wina Group 1 over 1m2f up goes his shed value big time……..he’s got sod all to lose by running him.
Some seem to be worried about the trip for Harbinger which seems a bit strage for ahorse with so much toe. Personally I think they are worrying about the wrong horse and I can’t see Rip Van Winkle running unless Harbinger doesn’t.
I don’t think he’d see the trip out well enough to cope with him plus it could really mess up the rest of the season for him being so soon after Goodwwood, those dodgy feet and all. I’d bet on him not running.
Bookies won’t be rushing to make a book on this one until plans are clearer as one of them is going to be way too big if the other doesn’t run
I can see this ending up a match between Harbinger and the much improved Twice Over.

First Point – Yes, that’s what I was thinking also

Second Point – Absolutley spot on

If a pacemaker is there to make a medium pace instead of fast, it’s difficult for you as a jockey to take it on (for a faster pace). Otherwise the pacemaker can increase the pace to such a degree to make you go too fast. Rendering your chance nil. (Does not matter if the pacemaker’s own chance is compromised, as he is not trying to win).
Or if taking a pacemaker on, goes fast enough for you to think you’re then going too fast, so reign back. Only to find it all happening again. Pacemaker reins back, resulting in a stop start gallop which is no good to you; needing a fast pace.It may be technically wrong, but pacemakers used like this are (imo) impossible to prove it’s deliberate.
