If they “Leave it alone” TTM, then the ground could (not officially but in reality) be on the firm side of good. That would be dangerous.
Value Is EverythingMarch 16, 2022 at 10:31 #1587467Some forecasts say the rain is coming, some say it’s not.
Where there is doubt, I’m inclined to agree with watering for the welfare of the animals. If they hadn’t watered last night and no rain comes today, it could’ve been potentially dangerous. We don’t want Cheltenham making headlines for the wrong reasons. I still remember a few years back when there were a good few fatalities and injuries.
The knives were out.March 16, 2022 at 11:04 #1587480The rainfall radar indicates that it started raining about an hour ago and looks set to continue for a while: generally light with some heavier bursts
March 16, 2022 at 11:29 #1587492I’m in BS34, just down the road, northern edge of Bristol. It’s been raining here for 2 hours, steady rain, some heavier bursts. If Cheltenham gets the same it’ll likely turn soft i would think.
March 16, 2022 at 11:35 #1587496The rain is on its way…

March 16, 2022 at 12:24 #1587512I’m all for welfare but its not like there was firm in the description yesterday and there was rain forecast today. Its a balancing act I guess but it does seem like the clerks just do what they want and don’t even bother with updates when it changes etc like yesterday the going was clearly quicker than advertised
March 16, 2022 at 13:19 #1587542As predicted earlier, official going is now Soft.
March 16, 2022 at 13:26 #1587544Yes Wilts, but there’s been more rain than expected.
…And sometimes the forecast is wrong and there’s little or no rain.
Race times yesterday were impossible on true “good-soft”, it was in fact true good ground yesterday.
Therefore, had there been no rain (firming up from true good ground) we’d be racing on true good-firm going today, which would’ve meant many non-runners and (in all probability) far more injuries and fatalities.Do you want a far greater chance of equine injuries and fatalities?
Value Is EverythingMarch 16, 2022 at 13:26 #1587545Anyone know a weather report for the next couple days? Hope its still decent ground on Friday
March 16, 2022 at 13:29 #1587549Ben
As far as I’ve seen. It’s to be dry on Thursday and Friday.
New course from tomorrow so fresh ground also.
I need the good ground for A Plus Tard too.March 16, 2022 at 13:30 #1587551From memory Ben, I believe this is the only significant rain forecast. Tomorrow will be much better.
Value Is EverythingMarch 16, 2022 at 13:31 #1587552Cheers GM and Ginger! Best of luck if having any bets today lads!
March 16, 2022 at 13:43 #1587566Our local itv forecast, at 10.30pm last night (Met Office) little or no rain. Any forecast rain was well out East.
March 16, 2022 at 14:02 #1587587Paul Nicholls being pretty scathing about the watering policy.
March 16, 2022 at 14:30 #1587609There was nothing wrong with the ground yesterday. It helped to produce some high class racing.
Let nature take care of the ground.
As for the two replies to my earlier comment, I always chalk up personal remarks which make no attempt to address the argument as a win.
March 16, 2022 at 14:40 #1587615Completely agree Cork
Farcical stuff
Watering when rain is forecast
March 16, 2022 at 14:44 #1587619I agree Cork. Genuine good ground seems to be a problem, so they water. They must have ‘soft’ in the going description. We all understand the welfare issue, but I think they’re over cautious.
