Second Part to previous poll. Who would win the GC in their peak, etc.
February 27, 2007 at 17:35 #42070this has to come down to a straight shoot out between Dessie and B Hill Lad, with the venue favouring the latter.
February 27, 2007 at 18:31 #42072The key is whether we are voting on greatest Gold Cup performance rather than relative merits of the winners through their careers. I take it we are, and so two points should be made:
Desert Orchid should gain no votes here ~ he won a farcical Gold Cup and simply wasn’t in the same leagues at Cheltenham as he was at Ascot or Sandown.
Burrough Hil Lad was certainly the best of these, but his actual performance in beating Brown Chamberlin fairly narrowly was not his best by some way.
February 27, 2007 at 22:34 #42074Great threads these but what are we being asked to vote on? Are we voting –
For the best horse from the list?,
For the best Gold Cup performance from the list?
or
For the winner of a ‘fantasy’ Gold Cup containing these horses?

Has to be Jodami for me.
One of my abiding memories is seeing him going well enough for Mark Dwyer to take a pull going into the last.
He was some horse on that day, and they certainly weren’t trees behind him.
February 27, 2007 at 23:47 #42077If there was a Gold Cup run between these? Burrough Hill Lad would get my money and I’d be planning the spending before they even lined up.
February 28, 2007 at 00:27 #42079Good grief, some pretty modest horses have won the Gold Cup, haven’t they?
Desert Orchid easily the best of these, but not over the Gold Cup course, so I’ll go with Jodami, who looked awesome when he won. BHL second.
February 28, 2007 at 05:40 #42080Well I haven’t a clue really, but I’ve voted for BHL obviously. Can’t let the old boy down
February 28, 2007 at 14:01 #42081PAULCS,
The race would be at cheltenham over the gold cup course and distance with all the horses in the poll in there peak and running the best possible race they could
February 28, 2007 at 14:32 #42083Desert Orchid by an absolute mile
On ground he detttested, a course he hated and left handed
To overcome those handicaps was the greatest performance i have seen on a racecourse (well i was at home..but anyway)
BHL was a beauty too
February 28, 2007 at 15:47 #42085Not sure of your reasoning here Clivex. As Desert Orchid disliked Cheltenham and was never at his best there then how would he beat all the other winners if they were all at their peak?
I’m not knocking Desert Orchid – great racehorse etc but I always considered him to be better elsewhere.
Anyway my vote goes to BHL.
February 28, 2007 at 20:33 #42088It’s great to see BHL out in front like this. I remember seeing him win at my first ever visit to Cheltenham. My hubby and I had gone just to support him, and I also had my first ever bet, which obviously was a winning one. A fabulous day.
