That made me laugh out loud :)
March 17, 2007 at 11:05 #46775I don’t believe the bare form of this year’s Gold Cup is anything to get excited about but Kauto Star himself already was a horse to get excited about and that hasn’t changed. They went a slow pace in yesterday’s race: KS ran from 3 out to line about 10 lengths quicker than you would expect for a race with that overall time.

Agreed ; with the likes of Turpin Green and Monkerhostin finishing pretty close, the form doesn’t look outstanding.
That said, Kauto Star deserves every accolade bestowed on him for versatility. How many Gold cup winners had the speed to win a Grade 1 at two miles ? I can’t remember that many.

Surely this is a positive that KS and ED were able to quicken away from them so quickly. To put the race to bed in a matter of strides off a steady pace is surely the sign of a top-class performer?

Such heresy, Smithy?:o :o
Don’t you know that, unless the race is run in record time with the field scattered all over the Cotswolds, then the form is garbage?
March 17, 2007 at 13:59 #46784Desert Orchid probably didnt achieve a great deal when beating Yahoo but he was still a bloody good horse (as he proved time and again). Kauto has a long way to go to match either his popularity or durability, but you can do no more than soundly thrash your contemporaries over a variety of distances. Throw in the fact that connections seem to want to race him, rather than mollycoddle him, and we have a horse to savour at present.
PS. Two weeks until the Lincoln…..thank God.
March 17, 2007 at 15:24 #46785was an exellent race but surely luck wont last forever, exotic dancer if upfront a bit sooner may havbe been a different story…also the younghorse neptune collonge ran a brilliant race for a young horse hope he returns there again atleast they all finished safely……
March 17, 2007 at 18:21 #46786
It was just brilliant to be there to see KS confirm his greatness and the atmosphere was just something else especially when he hit the front two out.
What a horse he is – remember he cantered all over the new 2m champion Voy Por Ustedes in the Tingle Creek by 7L!
And to think that if he had stood up in last year’s Champion Chase and won, he may never have ran in a Gold Cup in his life!
I would love to have seen him finish off at Aintree but he certainly deserves his break now. It has been quite briliiant to witness how Paul Nicholls has campaigned him aggressively and handled him overall.
March 17, 2007 at 18:23 #46787Well done Kauto Star, best horse in the race. Not the demolition job as suggested by some people. I don’t believe he is the best chaser in 20 years, not yet anyway.

So why aren’t more horses campaigned aggressively? It beats me.

Maybe Henrietta Knight had a point?
In recent years, how many dual winners of the Gold Cup have there been, & how many made it back for a third attempt?
March 18, 2007 at 11:05 #46790Given the way the race was run, how was Kauto Star supposed to demolish them. The race was run at a steady pace. I haven’t looked at the sectionals but an overall time comparison with the Foxhunters tells you how fast they didn’t go in the Gold Cup. As such the bare margin of 2 1/2 lengths and the same grossly underestimates the superiority on the day of Kauto Star and Exotic Dancer. But we know that anyway from looking athe their form from earlier in the season.
johnjdonoghue – what more does he has to do to prove himself as ONE OF THE BEST chasers of the last 20 years?
It’s proved itself against its contemporaries illustrating versatility over distance, going and trip.
However there will be those who aren’t satisfied until it goes up against:-
- this year’s top novices next season
- those that never made it to the GC like Kicking King and War of Attrition should they ever get back
OR proves its Arkle by humping huge weights in the mud (pie in the sky in the current era).
March 18, 2007 at 23:26 #46792
You can wrap them in cotton-wool to try and prolong their careers but as we’ve seen all too often you never know what is around the corner so strike while the iron is hot I say….
March 18, 2007 at 23:34 #46793Hen knew best how to campaign Best Mate.KS will never win three Gold Cups, probably not even two-And what was AP thinking about leaving his challenge too late on ED?
March 18, 2007 at 23:40 #46794totally cant even consider himlike bestmate…bestmate did it three times and chances are you dont even know what ks will be doin in 12months time, but was a fab race….;)
March 19, 2007 at 10:06 #46795WOA will need to grow wings.. Kicking King at his peak would be more likely to give Kauto a race but thats not likely to happen. ED would have rated a similar winner to WOA last season if Kauto hadn’t lined up.. The way in which he cleared away from the field when asked was awesome and barring injury I can see him going unbeaten for some time…
And I think they should stick him in a handicap over 2 miles (avoid stamina issues) and get rid of the flak before it arrives!!!
I can’t see Denman beating him, Ruby will pick Kauto every time.. Look forward to seeing My Way De Solzen line up against him. He looks the most likely challenger.. Next season promises to be a cracker with such good Arkle and Sun Alliance winners..
