Could they not run another National for the horses lower down the handicap the way they have gold and silver cups for some flat handicaps? I miss those days when long distance ploddy low weighted horses from smaller yards stood a chance of winning.

What if Nick Rockett falls at the 1st tomorrow? Would he still be qualified?

I think so as he just as to start, but if he plants himself that could be a different story. Don’t fancy Nick Rockett this year, last year he was a forgotten horse which is why he drifted to 33/1. Fancied him last year along with Intense Raffles, but not because of the Bobbyjo race but because of the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase.

He Didn’t Like Ground, would you call Noble Yeats a graded horse 9th in Ultima beaten 20 lengths and second of four to Ahoy Senor at Wetherby.

“The compressing of the weights is what makes the classier horses come to the fore as much as anything I think. Realistically nothing with a chance gets into the race off less than 10 stone 7 maybe and they have to expose themselves to some degree to get in. This isn’t one of the run of the mill sneak one in at the bottom handicaps.”

Tinman there is the occasional year where the gap between Cheltenham and Aintree is 4 weeks and therefore sufficient time for a horse to excel at Cheltenham and therefore go into the National fresh enough and “well in”. In other words if the handicapper was able to reassess them they would have more weight, and therefore be amongst classier horses on the racecard. Happened to Corach Rambler in 2023, winning aged 9 off just 10 stone 5 and an OR of 146, because he was able to run in in the National unpenalised after his Ultima win. Johnnywho will be able to go to the National with a similar set of circumstances, an OR likely in the 150s but still able to run off his current mark of 146 after his Ultima win and carry 10 stone 4 should the top weight run as expected. All being well the trainer will freshen him up sufficiently for Aintree and be happy for him to run, assuming he gets in alright.
He’s had just the 10 chase starts as well aged 9 so not too many miles on the clock. And being 9 he’s in the recent winners age bracket of 7-9.
Not saying he will definitely win because Corach did but he does look shortlist material and it would be no surprise to me if he won.

I like Johnnywho but I’d say her struggle in a GN , he often gets behind and you struggle to get that ground back most GN

He was positioned midfield in the Ultima and midfield is fine in a National.

I’m happy that I waited on Quai De Bourbon last year when 25/1, and I’m a lot happier to take 33/1 nrnb

I’ve also bet Perceval Legallois at 50-1 nrnb

Nick Rockett’s qualified now and, to answer ExRubyLight’s question, yes he only had to start a chase to qualify for the National.

Even Anthony Dunkley on RTV, not someone in the habit of saying anything controversial, observed right after it was finished that Nick Rockett was “never put in the race”.

Mullins did give the reins a shake and closed by a few lengths after the last, which ensured he was beaten too far.

He was as never going to give Gerri 7lbs , I wasn’t that impressed with Nicks jumping , I’m sure he’ll come on a bundle but I think Gerri may well finish in front of him in the National , I’m on him now, so I hope so

A nice schooling session (for fitness) in public.

Not sure about Gerri Colombe as he has no form in large fields, Nick at least has that. I feel Nick will come on for that run, but not enough. Nick was five pounds lighter when winning the National.

“A nice schooling session (for fitness) in public.”

Yes. I think everyone knew the score today. But the question it raises is where does that sort of run end and schooling in public start?

Mr Mullins didn’t exactly look animated going down to the third and second last fences and he never raised his whip once.

Maybe Mr. Whip Ban forgot how to use it

It was an incredible piece of schooling in public. I think the horse should be spot on for the GN. Whether he’s as good as last year, remains to be seen. The schooling session though was approved and perfectly executed.

I’m terrible at picking the National winner, but right now I might back Jagwar at a slightly better price than 12/1 available. Surely I won’t get that.
