Some are better at different courses, distances, left or right handed, strong pace, slow pace, front running or held up, fast going, heavy etc. If you know it all inside out like our gingertipster does the world is your oyster

“Some are better at different courses, distances, left or right handed, strong pace, slow pace, front running or held up, fast going, heavy etc”

    Obviously

That wasn’t really the point I was making

It was more of an abstract point about ranking the achievements of two horses

I’d always rank a horse like trueshan lower in my mind than a stradivarius who did on all ground in his pomp

A horse having a preffered surface and a horse being so ground dependant its pulled out every time there’s no soft in the going is a bit different

Glad they actually ran trueshan today

    Was a cracking race

“I’m with you FF91 to a degree. Difficult for a flat horse to get ‘champion status’ in my mind when it has to wait until it chucks it down in the Autumn to reverse form away from the prestigious summer championship races”.

    —————————

It’s not just about reversing the form though, Mike.
It’s about how good other horses are in each race if they ran their race and where they finished too.

ie If A beats B in the summer and then horse B beats horse A in the Autumn the best horse could be either horse.

Only when looking at the other horses in the races and / or race times compared to other races on the two days can the probable better horse be found.

Was it just me who found Bjorn Nielsen a bit unsavoury in his post race remarks – mainly about what he said about Doncaster. Who is he to say they need to double their prize money or they wouldn’t go there? I think that’s a darn shame for the people of Doncaster personally and surely he’s not keeping Stradivarius in training for the prize money anyway its for Strad’s love of the game and for the people to enjoy him. And now he’s backtracking on the Dettori situation because everyone has told him and we all saw today that Stradivarius isn’t a straightforward ride.

I completely empathise with what is surely a traditional view here.

Many associate summer Flat racing with quick ground.

But in this era of overwatering, masked by going stick readings for one stayed surface which would have been a softer stated surface a few years ago, the issue is less black and white.

Where once starting Glorious Goodwood on Good to Firm (Firm in places) would have been acceptable, it has to be at least a shade slower nowadays and they water to accomplish it.

People are naturally skeptical about soft ground form because the distances horses are beaten is greater. In very soft ground a lot greater.

However, just as a length is worth fewer lbs the greater the race distance (and also the nearer a race is to having equal fractions)…
A length is worth fewer lbs the softer the ground is.

Once allowing for the poundage difference in distances beaten, it is possible to compare form on differing ground conditions and calculate who is probably the better horse.

I’ve thought for a while now that Stradivarius is not the force he was since he ran in the arc de triomphe with Enable. Yes he may have won races after that but just not the force of old.
Always consistent and credit to him, but younger legs and swift movers to outrun him now

Kyprios is the coming stayer and lets hope he stays injury free. The vase injury could have been a blessing in disguise for him as aiden had to take his time. It looks as if strad was at least level with kyprios in the final furlong but the winner found more end of.The same as at ascot. Kyprios was faster than strad in the last furlong so strads kick made no difference. The point frankie made that he doesnt have the finishing kick to beat the likes of kyprios was ignored in the frankie gosden spat.
Neilson is in danger of sullening strads legacy. How many times can a horse be unlucky. Any other outfit would be man enough to admit what we can all see with our own eyes. I doubt coolmore or godolphin would keep coming out with the nonsense neilson has. Only in one gold cup can you say he was genuinely unlucky. The rest just not good enough. Changing jockey made no difference today. Strad probably run his best race for 2 seasons today but kyprios it a very classy stayer and kept finding. Hopefully all 3 are at ascot on champions day.

A real possibility Kyprios will not run when the weather turns anyway. Makes more sense to be saved for multiple Ascot Gold Cup win attempts.

I just personally can’t rate a horse highly that only goes on firm ground, ground that blunts the stamina of the other horses”. :rose:

Reckons his slightly waning star is worth £120k more in appearance money I suppose…assuming he wins. Oh well, the owner seems very keen on the long straight at York protecting his golden boy from the nasty bullies so Strad should hack up there.

Makes more sense for AOB to only take on a superior rival when the ground is unlikely to suit his rival..

If AOB does not go for the race on Champions Day then he’s running scared. :negative:

It is a fair comment by Nielsen.
Races need to be worth an amount that justifies the quality of racehorse it is supposedly trying to attract.
