“I just personally can’t rate a horse highly that only goes on firm ground, ground that blunts the stamina of the other horses”. ”
An opinion you are definitely entitled to
If you prefer slow horses to fast ones that’s perfectly fine
July 26, 2022 at 23:31 #1608895“If AOB does not go for the race on Champions Day then he’s running scared.”
Not at all. Trueshan wasnt running scared missing the Gold Cup, he would just not show his form coz he don’t like the ground. Same with Kyprios were he to miss Ascot.
July 27, 2022 at 00:26 #1608901A firm surface places more pressure on the legs of a horse with a roundish action, Mike.
So can understand connections of Trueshan not wanting to run on it. Never has run on ground officially with firm in the title. There is no such health issue with Kyprios.
tbh could understand them not running on soft or heavy, because Kyprios’s form seems to suggest he’s not as good on those surfaces. No excuse not to run on genuine good or good-soft.Value Is EverythingJuly 27, 2022 at 01:08 #1608904I was being ironic, FF.
Sprint handicappers can win any race of a longer distance with their speed if the race is run slow enough in the early stages. ie If stamina is never an issue.
Call me daft if you like, but I will always rate Classic and Group 1 horses above sprint handicappers.
Call me daft if you like, but I will always rate a horse with a far better rating / performance as a better racehorse.
Call me daft if you like, but I will still be rating a horse as “flattered” one with vastly inferior quality / ability, one who has only won the “slowly run” race because it has shown more speed in the final stages than superior quality rivals..
For me it is all about quality / ability, whether that ability comes through stamina or speed.
Sometimes one with greater stamina will have the better form, sometimes the one with more speed will have the better form. But each to his own.

July 27, 2022 at 20:36 #1609075Stradivarius would have won but for Trueshan and Thunderous. At least the stewards looked at Thunderous’ lugging “sharply left.” It was however surprising to see Trueshan suddenly come off the bridle over 3f out, come upsides Stradivarius and seemingly knock him off balance.
July 27, 2022 at 21:12 #1609090Cant see why folk think strad would have won. Kyprios was pulling away at the end. Each to their own view.
July 28, 2022 at 20:06 #1609229I thought he was being very harsh on Doncaster Ginge but its his horse I suppose he can run it where he wants. The Lonsdale and Doncaster Cup are both Group 2’s so they shouldn’t be expecting Group 1 prize money, difference is one is very well funded as its part of the Ebor festival. I think it was the tone which most annoyed me, came across as very arrogant like his star horse was more important than anybody else who wanted to run at Doncaster and that they should change the prize money around just to get him to come, probably at the expense of another race.

me too. Also his plan to keep the horse in training next year. Stradivarius ran a great race on Tuesday. All conditions were in his favour though. He will never beat Kyprios now. Nor will he beat Trueshan on softer ground. I can understand the argument that it’s silly to retire him mid-season (though that was apparently their original plan) but expecting a 9 year old entire to compete at the top level is fanciful. Kyprios will get better and others will emerge, Stradivarius will continue to decline – and nobody wants to see that.July 29, 2022 at 19:26 #1609381Nick Luck, speaking on RTV today, commented that Stradivarius had tried to mount Trueshan after the race.
Sounds like he may not be very successful at stud, so they may as well geld him and carry on racing.
July 29, 2022 at 19:48 #1609386Blimey. Wouldn’t put it past them running him in the National if that’s the case!

Remember, kids: just say no.
September 2, 2022 at 20:30 #1613107The thing is, it shouldn’t be thought of as a mad idea. It should be something that is encouraged. We should be wanting to see horses prove their versatility, especially if they’re going to be a NH sire.
A big money prize for completing the Ascot Gold Cup/ Champion Hurdle double.
Sadly I can’t see it ever happening, but that just reflects the mainly insular thinking of both codes.
September 2, 2022 at 21:00 #1613111John Oaksey once had some notion about Ardross being aimed at the Champion Hurdle.
No one took a blind bit of notice of him.
