Any reasoning for your thoughts? Given the entries and likely starters, I’d be extremely surprised if Djakadam didn’t place. He won’t win, but I think his odds for an ew place are very attractive
January 15, 2017 at 00:24 #1282170It’s the Gold Cup. Did you really think Mullins and Ricci would be without a runner in the Blue Riband, Stilvi?
It’s true Djakadam hasn’t been at his best since last year’s race, But he’s still young and doubt he’s on the downgrade yet. Had excuses since. At least as effective at the longer distance. Right race and 12/1 good value.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 15, 2017 at 02:12 #1282173If Douvan were mine, he’d run on the Wednesday and in this. Freak horses like him come round once in a lifetime, so why the hell not? Give us another Flyingbolt!

All being well I don’t see him beating either Thistlecrack or Native River. That leaves one place up for grabs. As I have always suggested it then depends on what else runs. He has got lucky with the two recent defections but it wouldn’t surprise me if there is at least one more that proves too good for him. Personally, I don’t think backing a horse, who isn’t going to win, for one place is very attractive.
January 15, 2017 at 11:44 #1282194I believe Cue Card will run in the Gold Cup which will make it harder there for Djakadam and the Ryanair easier. V Lido has now gone too.
Djakadam has run valiantly in staying chases but the figures are stark: 1 from 9, and he’s had some really hard races. I doubt he’ll be improving now at that trip and he’s already had two goes in Gold Cups arguably no better than this one and, allowing for the potential of Thistlecrack, perhaps worse.
Ruby, as with Vautour, will lobby for the race he believes he can win. Un De Sceaux is the current fav for the Ryanair. Perhaps the key question is, if UDS and Djakadam lined up in the Ryanair, which would Ruby ride?
January 15, 2017 at 11:58 #1282196Just as a rider to that, Ricci said some time ago that Djakadam might go for the Ryanair if the ground was quick and the GC if it was soft. That baffled Lydia Hislop (a big GC Djakadam fan), but the key lies in UDS. In soft ground Ruby would probably favour UDS over Djakadam in the Ryanair: other way round if it was good.

If you read yesterday’s Post you wouldn’t even be arguing about the Ryanair. Hence my post.
As for Hislop she has been banging on about the Gold Cup for weeks and is over a cliff if the horse doesn’t place. Unfortunately, her record is in reality one of many words but very little reward.
January 15, 2017 at 12:27 #1282203I backed Djakadam 9/1 EW W/O thistle crack with BF Sport Book last week. Hes 11/2 now as a few have come out. I still think that a safe EW bet as i cant see him being out the first 4 home and have gone in again

I’d look at possibly doing that next year. Possibly.
This year – Champion Chase
Next year – Have a go at both
2019 – Take your pick
January 15, 2017 at 13:16 #1282224Djakadam will probably run in the Gold Cup by default because who else does Willie run here…?
Black Hercules doesn’t hold an entry yet does for the CC Lol so will probably take up the Ryanair route with UDS. Vroum Vroum Mag is versatile but depending on Annie Power and Faugheen could be in the World Hurdle.
I’d expect in all likelihood they have wanted Djakadam in the Ryanair but options are thin on the ground, Douvan doesn’t have a Gold Cup entry eitherBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 15, 2017 at 14:16 #1282231Stilvi, I read Mullins but he lost all credibility with Vautour, with me, at least. And for all his apparent certainty yesterday, he still wouldn’t say – he runs in the Gold Cup, full stop.

Exactly. Djakadam could be absolutely motoring at home the week before Cheltenham and Mullins could come out and say ‘Djakadam did some disappointing work yesterday’ and then he is dropped into Ryanair. They will say what they want, do what they want and lie when they want. The whole Vautour saga last year proved that.

Because Douvan doesn’t settle well enough to stay 3m2f.

1 from 9 makes no difference. Fact is the Gold Cup is the race Djakadam’s produced his best two performances in.
If Djakadam and UDS both ran in the Ryanir then Ruby would go for Djakadam. However, that would also leave him without a good ride in the Gold Cup, Ruby wants to win the big one and it still leaves UDS with a second favourite’s chance of the Ryanair (UDS).
Vautour decision totally different. Ruby won’t “lobby” for Djakadam to run in the Ryanair, because he wants to win the Gold Cup and there isn’t another viable Mullins Gold Cup candidate this year. Last year he thought Djakadam was his best chance to win the Gold Cup (not doubtful stayer Vautour)… And without Vautour wouldn’t have had anything like an odds-on chance for the Ryanair. Therefore, as far as Ruby is concerned it made perfect sense for Vautour to go Ryanair and Djakadam Gold Cup. Unlike Vautour, Djakadam is proven at the trip and proven in this particular race. Unless Black Hercules suddenly shows form equal to Djakadam in the next few weeks, or Ruby is offered the ride on Thistlecrack/Native River – there’s not much chance of Djakadam going for the shorter distance. Might think about it if something happens to Douvan and UDS moves to Champion, leaving no top class Mullins horse for the Ryanair. However, that gives nothing for the one that really matters to him and especially Mullins and Ricci who are yet to win a Gold Cup (especially after last year’s Vautour decision).

When you actually stop to think about it, made perfect sense for Djakadam to go Gold Cup and Vautour to go Ryanair. Just surprising they didn’t make the decision sooner. Suspect the reason for that was convincing the owner.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 16, 2017 at 09:50 #1282326‘Djakadam’ could very well run in the Ryanair this year but Willie will do what he did last year with ‘Vautour’ with him, this years reasons will be personal though. Gigginstown sponsor the race we all know that and Michael O’leary is well documented in saying he wants to win his own race.Last year he would have had the first 2 home had Willie not put a spanner in the works, that same spanner came back to Mullins yard with a note on it,we all know what that said too!The Gigginstown Ryanair team dont look so strong this season but both ‘Outlander’ and ‘Sub Lieutenant’ are serious players should they be confirmed runners.Willie has ‘Un des sceaux’ and ‘Black Hercules’ lined up for it but again we all know if he gets out of bed the wrong side the day before declaration neither could run and thats where ‘Djakadam’ sits waiting.Willie would get so much pleasure from getiing one over Michael in the Gigginstown race so all those ‘Djakadam’ Gold Cup supporters had better hope ‘Black Hercules’ takes off soon.

I completely disagree. Do you really believe that Willie Mullins is going to put a horse in a race simply to get one up on Michael O Leary? Thats something I would expect of a 10 year old child. I cant see it happening. Either way he already has un de sceaux and black Hercules to run in the Ryanair. Djakadam will run in the Gold cup because he was second in it the last two years and Willie has nothing else for the race. Why would he send 3 to the Ryanair and none to the gold cup, that doesn’t make sense.
