I did say ‘he is not as good on the going like he was many years ago’ I never said it has always been against him.
Yes, that’s what you said, Nathan, I suppose (at a push) it could be taken two ways.
Sounded to me what you were saying was “he is not as good on good going, just like he was many years ago” (not s good on good going). ie Sounded like you were saying good ground has always been against him.
Value Is EverythingDecember 31, 2016 at 00:10 #1279356I did say ‘he is not as good on the going like he was many years ago’ I never said it has always been against him.
As horses like humans get older (past their prime) they naturally lose a bit of pace, I’d say stamina is more his strength nowadays, I could be wrong it’s only my opinion and with a bit of cut in the going it slows down the younger speedier sorts. Back to the Gold Cup 3 fences out is still a long way from home, a lot can change at Cheltenham after the last fence, lets just say he won with a rating of 180+Looking at this years race(2017)
Would you prefer him running in the Gold Cup on GOOD or with some cut in the going….?
What going would represent his best chance…..?If what you’re saying is, although he acts on good going he needs softer to emphasise stamina; now you’ve brought in the caveat I can see where you’re coming from. Stamina is his strength when racing at short of 3 miles, Nathan. Whether he needs softer ground to bring out stamina at 3m, doubt it but is possible.
My preferred Cheltenham going for Cue Card would depend on the race.
If Ryanair, then softer the better.
If Gold Cup then good or good-soft.Value Is EverythingDecember 31, 2016 at 11:47 #1279465Cue Card would have won the Gold cup last season and he’s still the biggest danger to Thistlecrack in this seasons race…17’s on the machine has just been taken by me.

Don Cossack would probably still have beaten him last March.
If it’s decent ground again and both Thistlecrack and Don Cossack turn up, he aint winning it this season either.
January 9, 2017 at 00:29 #1280912Not looking good for Coneygree in this, and not that big a surprise I suppose. I suppose there’s still time, but I wouldn’t be confident.

At the risk of boring everyone to death, they should not have run the horse in the Betfair. They nurse the animal through all sorts for months and years and then launch it into a Grade 1 against the KG winner in desperate ground and try to burn the speed out of Cue Card? Sara later says she doesn’t think Dicky went fast enough! Awfully sorry for the horse and his dedicated fans, but no sympathy for the Bradstocks.
January 9, 2017 at 11:55 #1280964Can you really blame them? It’s unfortunate, but it’s how the world works. A small yard gets a brilliant racehorse and they want to maximise his/her output for the future success of the yard. Who knows, maybe it was even his owner who said he wanted him to run in the Betfair.
Had he been mine, I’d have centred his season around small chases, designed to rebuild his fitness and race prowess, and then unleash him in the Gold Cup. Running him over 3m on heavy ground in a Grade 1 was not clever.
Plenty of examples of stupid race placement this year. Bally Gilbert Hyde Novices’ Hurdle. One Track Mind, Grade 2 Novice chase. Coneygree Betfair Chase. There was another novice chaser chucked into a Grade 1/2 on his debut, can’t remember who.
January 9, 2017 at 12:13 #1280972Confirmed that he’s not getting an entry
January 11, 2017 at 10:53 #1281409I’m hearing Don Cossack has retired.

I just heard this Vautour. I’m sorry to hear this, but I’m glad that
after the number of high profile horses coming to a sad end last year,
that he will at least get the chance to have a happy retirement. He was
my star horse last year in the 10 to follow, he did me proud there, and
it was my first my first visit to cheltenham on Gold Cup Day (or any
other day for that matter) where I got some great snaps of him in the
parade ring before he ran, and backed him into the bargain.I’m sorry for connections, but I’m glad they made the right decision.
January 11, 2017 at 12:23 #1281426Thistlecrack now odds on and rightly so with the competition looking thin on the ground. If Cue Card, Djakadam and Valseur Lido all go for the Ryanair as suggested by connections, it really only leaves Native River, Outlander, Don Poli and Many Clouds. The later two, more so as a prep for Aintree.
January 11, 2017 at 12:57 #1281430Minella Rocco. I actually quite fancy Many Clouds to place.
January 11, 2017 at 13:08 #1281433Fuming about Don Cossack. The stable have been very positive about him in recent weeks.
I don’t want to point fingers but this happens too often.

You’re being very harsh, they’ve been very upfront from the start that any issues at all and he’d be retired, they found heat in his leg yesterday and this morning everyone was informed with not a lot of laying done on betfair to my eye before the news was broken.
What more could they do
January 11, 2017 at 14:10 #1281438Yeah market was very stable, they acted with 100% decency.

Could well be but it happens too often. Two weeks ago they couldnt believe how well he’d been working.
January 14, 2017 at 22:47 #1282164For those who haven’t read today’s Post Mullins has virtually committed Djakadam to the Gold Cup. Strange, because goes against his usual style of waiting on the easiest option. My reading would be that he thinks the horse is just too slow to win a Ryanair. I don’t believe he really thinks that he can win a Gold Cup either but if enough horses drop out he will at least have some sort of chance of placing again. Personally, I think the horse is on a downward curve and bookmakers are very likely to end up pocketing the each-way money.
