I’ve backed Alary EW for the Gold Cup and will probably have a decent bet on Saturday. I know nothing about the horse, but I’m happy to bet him on the basis of what Tizz says, something I very rarely do.
But Tizzard is doing something down there that no one else is doing and it has to be in the exercise regime. There is no undiscovered superfood or effective thoroughbred psychologist. He has hit on something in the way he is working horses.
He said that when Alary came over and they worked him ‘he could not get up the hill’. A few weeks later he reported him finishing that same gallop very close to Thistlecrack. He teased the press for quite a while in saying he had a very good young horse – wouldn’t name it as Finian’s Oscar until very late. He has plenty to compare against and he will know a good horse when he has one. I expect Alary to be the surprise Gold Cup package and that he’ll be single figures for the Gold Cup late Saturday afternoon.
Alan Potts British business HQ is 5 mins from my house Joe,I know several guys who have worked there,I even have a customer who socialises with him and to a man they are all on this Alary for the Gold Cup at silly prices.I’ve had tips for his horses for years,I was told Sizing Europe would win the Arkle at 20/1 but I had backed Somersby at 16/1 and because I’m a stubborn idiot at times I stuck with my horse much to the ridicule of those who beat me in that driving finish…Worse than that a year later I had stayed loyal to Henriettas horse in the Champion Chase and the same bloody horse won again with all the locals round here on at double figure prices..TAPK learned that just occassionally ‘Tips from the Horses mouth’ are worth at least considering…The ‘Buzz’ for this striking Chestnut has gone viral now so every man and his dog have heard the superlatives he’s held in…Personally I’m staying loyal to Cue Card, I’m adamant he would have sluiced in last year and even at 11yo he’s the one to beat. We’re lucky to be on Thistlecrack at 10/1 but I’ve had my Glory day with him and I just hope Paddy keeps a lid on it this year. We’ll know on Saturday if ‘Alary’ is the real deal,he has to win to be considered Gold Cup class but there are those round here think he’s going to win in a canter…I’m just not one of them.Again!

I just wanted to quote this to make sure it would always be there if Gordon decided to edit his post, just so we can always appreciate it.

I just wanted to quote this to make sure it would always be there if Gordon decided to edit his post, just so I can always appreciate it as he is such a great judge of horseflesh…I know I’ve lived in his shadow on this forum for the past 8 years and I’ve failed on numerous occassions to undermine his brilliant record at picking horses for targets months in advance. He knows I even left this place for a couple of years when I tried to match his Cheltenham wagers threads and made a right proper Arse of myself, something I’ve done again in the DLAPS thread recently…Sorry TAPK you are the man and I’m just a Dick called Zarkava.
No probs Zark…Forgive and Forget pal eh?
January 18, 2017 at 21:07 #1282660It’s like reading Donald Trump’s tweets! Very sad!

What exactly to do with the exercise regime? This is the 21st century, it’s hard to believe that a trainer is going to hit on a method that’s going to be fundamentally better than anyone else.
Either he’s just getting better stock than everyone else or….
January 18, 2017 at 23:05 #1282676Judge, if I knew that I’d be training ’em.
He has a very good French horse come to him in what I assume was a reasonable state of fitness and he can’t complete the gallop?
Tizz changed his training routines last year. He won’t say in exactly what manner, but it seems to be working. And he’s obviously a good judge of stock. Yes, he’s getting good horses but he wouldn’t have anything like the firepower of Mullins for buying

Interesting read that. Cheers.
Reading the comments from people about Alary I had a look at his runs in France. Not exactly set the world alight which surprised me.
In fact, he’s won just twice in 20 starts.
Strange one as those who know the horse seem quite keen.
January 19, 2017 at 00:41 #1282681Yeah good luck Joe mate I’m sure you’re right.
Tbh looking at the horse on the racing post video of him on the gallops he looks a lovely type, very stocky. If there is an achilles heel with thistlecrack (and there probably isn’t) it’s that he’s so quick that he might have a problem with the end of a gold cup if it turns into a gruelling test, that is clutching at straws but I’m sure Alwary won’t have a problem with staying
if TAPK says the potts people are piling in that’s good enough for me
January 19, 2017 at 10:12 #1282696The way this race is shaping up Colin Tizzard may well have every chance of training the first 4 home. What odds would that be? In the race itself I have pinned all my hopes on Thistlecrack in singles and multiple bets. The only danger for me (fences aside) is Cue Card. Imagine Thistlecrack had bypassed the King George for the novice race, the Gold Cup would have a different complexion. Firstly the King George would in the absence of Thistlecrack have been run differently, Cue Card would not have been taken out of his comfort zone and would have won the race cosily and would now be trading around the 5/1 mark. Alary is the unknown quantity, I have backed him for the Peter Marsh Chase and if he wins in style will put half my winnings on him for the Gold Cup. If he wins in workman like fashion he may get rerouted to the Ryanair.

Well there’s a Bus leaving Somercotes on Friday 17th March full of Alary supporters, that tells me he wont be running in Thursdays race.By the way you are quite right ‘Judge’….He wont be winning the Gold cup even if he does win on Saturday.
January 19, 2017 at 11:23 #1282706Tizzard to train gold cup winner 4/9 from 4/6
Even 4/9 is value on the face of it. In a best-price book, (discounting Theatre Guide) his 4 runners make up 75.8% – a shade shorter than 3/1 on. It had been around 4/11 for quite some time, yet Skybet continued offering 4/6
January 21, 2017 at 16:43 #1283183Does anyone know much about this Alary, a French horse bought by the Potts to go for this year’s Gold Cup.
With Cue Card, Thistlecrack and Native River already is Tizzard going for a Michael Dickinson?
Alary has no chance on the form i’ve seen.
And even less chance now. 2 1/2 miles is his trip in this country and even then his jumping needs to improve. He resembled a virtual horse over a couple of the Haydock fences this afternoon.

If people are backing a 4/9 shot 2 months in advance, in something as volatile as horse racing, that is mad imo.
January 21, 2017 at 22:24 #1283228TAPK has had a bottle of ‘Dom Perignon’ tonight celebrating yet another winner and he has decided after a serious bit of cogitating that Bristol de Mai is this years Gold cup winner.I have won £2k from ‘Thistlecrack’ and stand to win another grand if he does win but at Even money I wouldn’t touch him now. Laugh at this suggestion at your peril but I have had umpteen Gold Cup winners over the years…’Best Mate’ 7/2 2004, ‘War of Attrition’ 10/1 2006, ‘Denman’ 12/1 2008, ‘Imperial Commander’ 33/1 2010, ‘Synchronised’ 25/1 2012 ‘Lord Windermere’ 66/1 2014 and last years ‘Winner’ ‘Cue Card’ 20/1 2016…As you can see I have the winner every 2nd year so having been robbed last year its my turn again now. Some suggest Bristol de Mai won a weak race today but I’m not one of them, from the moment he set off I could see Winner written all over him today and he duly obliged.First thing is he’s only a 6yo and you can see physically he’s still growing,he jumps and travels loves soft ground but will handle good ground, his form is consistent and his figures already suggest he’s an e/w palyer.I would raise him to 165 after today and thats Gold cup class,he has the potential now to be a 170 horse.TAPK has lost £150 on ‘Black Hercules’ for the Gold Cup and he has another £200 on ‘Cue Card’ at e/w prices.I wouldn’t swap him for anything but if age does catch up with him like it did ‘Dynaste’ then ‘Twisters’ 6yo Grey is a fine young pretender imo. Ladbrokes 20/1 has been taken to £50 e/w and Corals 16/1 has £50 e/w too. This fellows price will contract to single figures for this as he really isn’t a Ryanair horse now..I’ll leave that to Black Hercules for that now the JLT form takes a massive boost.
January 21, 2017 at 22:34 #1283229That Dom Perignon must be some powerful stuff Gord, enjoy
