Those races still aren’t on the scale of the top British events though are they? Our Grand National is the “biggest race in the world” who outside of France is really bothered about their equivalent?
They are all Grade 1s – how much bigger a scale would you like?
There is even an argument to suggest that they consistently constitute among the biggest or highest-class heavy-ground jumps contests in the world (if they don’t, they certainly run some of the Irish equivalents very close).
I’d also counter that nobody outside of France is that bothered about these races and their participants – a cursory glance through the TRF archives will reveal posts from the likes of Grasshopper and occasionally Kotkijet evaluating them.
Enough already. I’m off to see some fat pointers enjoying their big day out at Cheltenham. Play nicely.

Flash, it means foreign. I.e cancer is considered a foreign body in human physiology in the same way that an albanian in the congo would be considered foreign. Nothing to do with race.

THE biggest bloodstock deal in the history of Australian racing is set to proceed by Friday after Darley’s takeover of Woodlands was given final approval.
After the deal received the thumbs-up from the Foreign Investment Review Board, it means a reported 500million windfall will materialise for current Woodlands owner Bob Ingham.
From this weekend the majority of the horses under the Woodlands Stud Syndicate banner will race in the famous maroon and white silks of Sheikh Mohammed.
However, those horses will continue to be trained byPeter Snowden, who took over as Woodlands trainer last year.
“I am delighted to be making this commitment to Australian racing, to people who share my passion for thoroughbreds,” said Sheikh Mohammed.
“I welcome the team from Woodlands and look forward to developing the champions of the future.”
May 13, 2008 at 14:13 #163222I just read where they have bought Australia. If they wanted an island why did they not buy ireland?we have lots of horses and we could go and live in the uae and get some fun/i mean sun.
May 14, 2008 at 03:22 #163315Australian racing was born and raised from the blue collar player.
Sheikh Mo’s money is great for this industry – but to make an impact on the racing scene is another question entirely.
I’ll reserve judgement one year down the track.
