The respectable bookmakers won´t price up an event with a negative outcome. You won´t see Hills, BlueSQ, Victor Chandler, Ladbrokes etc. pricing that up.
Same with the classic PP "Next Pope" market.
As for getting on if you bet with the right bookmakers you´ll only be restricted to a decent sum 50 or so.
Funny reading the Betfair forum "they shut my account, if i´m that good why don´t they use me for the mark" they won´t have it that they can get it off someone else and get more and better info more than likely.
September 14, 2008 at 19:24 #180962FWIW I had a Ladbrokes account restricted a few months ago, after the huge 10 pound win only on a horse in South Africa, said horse won at 7/1. Now nothing on the net and "refer all" on account.
September 14, 2008 at 19:30 #180965"Respectable bookmakers" – what is that meant to be mean, that PP are less respectable than the afore mentioned?
Anyway seagull, the upside for a firm like Powers is that they get their name plastered across the media as they were the only firm betting on the next company going bust and prob ended up losing 2k tops on the market if all you and your friend got was 80/20 combined. Pretty cheap form of advertising and pretty effective also.
If anyone thinks they price up any novelty market with their main aim to make money on the market, you are incorrect. This is secondary.
September 14, 2008 at 20:21 #180979Your spot on ratpack. They know that they will lose money on these markets(very small amount) and are happy to do so with the publicity they gain from it. But you cant blame them for doing what they do and theres no better company for getting themselves in the media then Paddypower.
September 15, 2008 at 16:37 #181133The formula for novelty markets is always "maximum publicity and minimum bets".
September 15, 2008 at 18:24 #181154Same with the classic PP “Next Pope” market.
Me and the much-missed Golden Cygnet asked for that market to be opened by Paddy Power back in the day…………..and we were certain that we had the inside line.
Moral of the story is don’t mess with the Vatican – they knew.

There religious odds compiler is apparently my local priest – he´s forward thinking and has his ear to the ground on these things.
Remember the discussion in the lounge on the merits of the Cardinal of Tanzania vs. the chap from Colombia? Classic stuff.

When John Paul became Pope one of the best qualified front runners was Cardinal Secola of either Turin or Milan – I can’t remember which one it was – he was eliminated because they wouldn’t have a Pope Secolla.

Indeed Martin – was a proper hoot.
Our man Maradiaga of Honduras was apparently placed (though I can’t find the 1-2-3 anywhere) and is an absolute tap-in next time around.
You heard it here first.
September 16, 2008 at 18:17 #181299Ladbrokes now guarantee to lay Irish early prices in their shops to lose a grand.

Secola was from Milan and the story emanated from a mate of mine in the Scottish Baptist college in Glasgow at the time who had some inside info or so I thought.
