One of the fascinations of this sport is how the breeding will turn out
But does it really denigrate a horses true ability if his offspring fall below absolute top class?
Dancing Braves were never really earthshatteringly brilliant, but there have few if any, better horses over past 25 odd years
A horse with an even more dire stud record, although he died relatively young, but similar racing ability was Reference Point. There have been many others, too.
August 23, 2006 at 19:26 #72579And guess who has been confirmed a definate runner on Sunday and not packed off to stud like many suggested?
August 23, 2006 at 19:56 #72580:biggrin: Very good!
August 27, 2006 at 14:58 #2933Bad start.. wrong course…bit of a nutter
hes alovely horse, but where can he go next?
Really looks like one of those that needs a flat straight (ish) track.
Mot exactly breeders cup conditions… i just cant see him going well there
August 27, 2006 at 15:03 #75949I thought George Washington comes out of it with plenty of credit despite finishing 3rd. Having missed the break and pulling hard he still made up about 8l after coming under pressure 3f out. Without wanting to sound like a Ballydoyle sympathiser I would hope he will come on for the run. His turn of foot was visibly very good to my eye and hopefully he should settle better. I would like to point out I backed Karadak so I am not talking through my pocket.
Look forwards to seeing GW out again.
August 27, 2006 at 15:03 #75950Ideally the QE2 which will probably be relatively weak given the lack of good milers around.
I wonder if Mordin will have the last laugh. This is what he said after the guineas:
"My speed ratings indicate that George Washington beat a bunch of rivals here that were either unfit, slow or non-stayers. I say forget the hype. This is a slow horse that should be opposed relentlessly from now on."
Steve
August 27, 2006 at 15:06 #75951I think Mordin is talking garbage to be honest. With a break on a par with everything else George Washington would’ve won by three or four lengths.
He is a character though, never know quite what you’re going to get with him.
August 27, 2006 at 15:07 #75952Is he Rakti in disguise?
August 27, 2006 at 15:07 #75953A most unsatisfactory race on an unconventional course.
The pacemaker was left alone with no-one following the pace and eventually held on for fourth ahead of Soviet Song and Rob Roy.
The winner , with solid enough Group form, got home by a short head from an unconsidered 50/1 shot.
As for GW, needed a pony to follow round the parade ring, awkward at the stalls, missed the start, pulled hard, awkward head carriage and did well to go relatively close.
Connections said more to work with and didn’t have a hard race.
Worth another chance on a conventional course though hugely temperamental and not one to lump on
August 27, 2006 at 15:11 #75954Simply ran ring rusty….we’ll see a different horse at Ascot. Confirmed today that all the ability is still there and that was the important thing.
August 27, 2006 at 15:43 #75955Very taken with GW today. I think he will win the QE2 in style.
When is Ballydoyle gonna learn that they need to run proper racehorses as pacemakers if they want the field to follow them ?
August 27, 2006 at 21:06 #75956Watched the re run and its all very positive. Race not run to suit but all the ability is still there and I expect O’Brien will have him really cherry ripe for Ascot in a few weeks. Lets just hope for decent ground and he should leave the rest for dead.
August 27, 2006 at 23:56 #75957Hey guys. Back for just one pearl of wisdom……as ever ;)
I thought the pacemaker didn’t do his job, going off far too quick – did he actually look around to see how George was doing??
Frankie ignoring McCabe was typical of Godolphin ignoring the Ballydoyle pacemaker in 2001 with the Irish Champ Stakes, Galileo vs Fantastic Light.
And fair enough, maybe River Tiber was not of quality to win, but can that be judged? Blatant set the pace in the QE2 2005 for Dubawi as a 100/1 shot, but ended up 3rd, AHEAD of Rakti, Mullins Bay and Sleeping Indian, so it’s difficult to judge based on that.
Anyway, I left Goodwood today after George got beat, not in the mood at all after that. Didn’t even have a penny on him. He proved his class, doing brilliantly to get so close after 1. Missing the break and giving away 8L+ to Caradak, 2. Hanging his head all over the place and being completely unsettled, 3. First run back for 3 months from a bad injury, 4. Hanging all over the place in the final furlongs, 5. New jockey on-board, and since George may well be the hardest ride at the moment in flat racing, I think the latter may be very significant.
I fully expect George to go on to win the QE2 in great style, a la Mark of Esteem and Dubai Millennium, and while this may also be down to a lack of class in the Mile division (Jury is still out IMO), I believe it is down to him having bags of class.
Everyone’s raving about Araafa……who beat him in the Guineas???…….
August 28, 2006 at 07:26 #75958EC
I dont think the cost of entering River Tiber would have caused Mrs Magnier and Mr Tabor and Mr Smith the need to apply for an Ocean Finance loan.
This horse did a good job in the Irish 200 gns as the pacemaker. The heavy ground that day was the undoing of G.W. that day.
The jury is out with regards to George Washington and I think Fallon may have decided to make a better attempt to race closer to the pace yesterday but I think Soviet Song was very disapointing.
August 28, 2006 at 08:56 #75959EC,
I am suprised at your speed figure as the race was easily the fastest of the day compared to standard but whichever way you look at it was not a champions performance failing to beat Caradak.
What worries me is that whereas its pretty easy to condition a horse its pretty hard to train quirks out and GW looks untrained to me.
August 28, 2006 at 10:29 #75960A bit harsh to say he looks ‘untrained’ Galejade. The horse is clearly a real character and I think it’ll be a case of pot luck whether he manages to put it all together on the racecourse. Lost the race at the start IMO on Sunday as Kinane couldn’t get him to settle after that. The horse pulled for the whole race and was never really able to be eased into a challenging position. It may be that he wouldn’t have settled anyhow but he certainly did himself no favours.
Whatever the outcomes with him in the future though I doubt that it’ll be for want of anything on the training front.
I thought the pacemaker did OK – he did bound clear after towing them along pretty well for the first three furlongs, but, three out, he had them all going it at behind as it looked for a few moments that he may have given them the slip. He finished fairly close up in 4th so I think that he did his job pretty well.
