2 fatalities at Cartmel this afternoon both looked to have suffered broken necks.
Alaplee’s fall has to be one of the worst I’ve seen in a long time.
RIP Galley Slave & AlapleeJuly 21, 2014 at 16:26 #486090A real golden oldie/veteran in terms of appearances (although only 9 years old) – Galley Slave – his first fall I am led to believe in more than a century of runs – and youngster Alaplee … glad I wasn’t able to go – VERY upsetting for all concerned. RIP boys.
I’ve just checked Galley Slave’s record and it would appear that he pulled up around 7 times but completed all the other National Hunt runs … WHY couldn’t he come home today …????

Galley Slave was one of my favourite horses, I’ve seen him run a few times and he always looked so happy walking round the paddock.July 21, 2014 at 16:56 #4860942 fatalities at Cartmel this afternoon both looked to have suffered broken necks.

RIP Galley Slave & AlapleeSpeculating here so sincere apologies if wrong, however I don’t think Galley Slave was a broken neck given that they took around 40 minutes to clear the track delaying the racing. I have a feeling they were treating him for possibly a back injury and trying to save him but were unable to.
As I say, speculation only based on the aftermath of a broken neck usually being dealt with very quickly.July 21, 2014 at 17:29 #486095I hope neither of them suffered … I hate any horse loosing it’s life in any way … but when they do I want them helped asap …
July 23, 2014 at 09:16 #486191Extremely sad about both horses, but especially Galley Slave, who was a real favourite of mine and a credit to his connections.

He was a fine looking horse and it is amazing how he retained his enthusiasm for racing after his many appearances, but he was in the form of his life and was on a hat trick bid at Cartmel. At least his connections had the pleasure of him winning 5 hurdle races over the years and being placed many times over.
My sincerest sympathies to everyone associated with both horses – they deserved a much better fate.
R.I.P Galley Slave and Alaplee
