I suppose in Alain Cawley’s defence he had a microphone shoved in front of him and he has spoken off the cuff without time to think. However, his comments when seen in isolation read very badly. He really ought to apologise and the PJA should disassociate itself from his remarks.
There is a small grain of truth in what he said. Racing is a competitive and potentially dangerous sport. Sometimes emotions will run high and sometimes things may be said in the heat of the moment. I think everyone accepts that to an extent.
However, what Cawley has described does give credence to the prosecution’s view that the weighing room culture is “rancid”. It is not difficult to see how bullies would thrive in that environment. And anyone who has worked in a place with a bullying culture sanctioned by senior figures and been on the receiving end of it knows how toxic it is and how bad it can affect mental and physical health.

December 10, 2021 at 08:47 #1571617“I suppose in Alain Cawley’s defence”
I think the “Winnie The Pooh Defence” is the best one to wheel out here.
That’s not an obscure Chess strategy but rather the “bear of very small brain” one.
The world CHANGES.
It’s hard to adjust to at times, I’m 58 and some things seem ludicrous to me.
But then I remember my grandfather and even father railing against things that made complete sense to me and I get with the program.
The world in 2021 just isn’t having it that you can do what Dunne did to Frost.
Accept it or be next.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 10, 2021 at 09:37 #1571623There is a world of difference between a heat of the moment exchange and the sort of systematic targeted bullying that this case has exposed. I doubt Bryony would have complained if it had been a one-off, although she would have been within her rights to. I am sure there are arguments between jockeys all the time, doubtless involving intemperate language. As Ian says, they’re competitors.
The evidence against Dunne was conclusive and he got what he deserved. If, in any way, he could be said to be “hard done by” (which he wasn’t), it would have been because of his own lamentable testimony.
December 10, 2021 at 10:17 #1571626A good article by Graham Cunningham on the Sporting Life website yesterday.
It made the news on this side of the ditch too- most of the Irish national newspapers carried the story and it was on RTE radio this morning.
December 10, 2021 at 11:40 #1571629Matt Chapman has been pilloried on social media for saying that are no winners in this case and many decent peopled have been bismirched by association. Time will tell if anybody actually wins out of this.
Firstly bryony herself. It’s clear she is dramatically down on rides since last year and while she is doing fantastic with the opportunities she’s getting is her situation going to improve. The weighing room has spectacularly closed ranks so do we think she will be any less ostracised. I have my doubts. Things might improve for female jockeys in the long run but I fear bryony is facing an extended period of hurt so in the short term at least she isn’t winning.
Dunne in no way is winning and the only thing he can cling to is a possible appeal which would be madness IMHO as it would mean weeks more of horrendous publicity.
The weighing room looks he’ll bent on circling the wagons and continuing as before so no breakthrough there.
So matt to my eyes makes a reasonable point but the public have overwhelmingly criticised him. So many folk naively think everything is going to be hunky dory going forward. If only that was the case.December 10, 2021 at 13:19 #1571640Quote from mickeyjp: “Firstly Bryony herself. If you take note of history: “Everything is long term, nothing is settled in a day”, but also look at what is happening in the present: “Social Media will be a force to reckon with, but always follow the money”. I have to ask the question: who is going to ride those horses that owners, who are mostly business people these days, under pressure from the public, say they do not want ridden by the steeplechasing jockeys of the old school, with their “omerta”, “cosy cartel”, “rancid culture”, “it was banter not abuse”, “it was not a threat, it was a figure of speech”. Owners pay jockeys. Public opinion still counts, even if the PJA is not aware of it.
Remember: “Certainly there is a connection between our friends and who we are.”
December 10, 2021 at 14:42 #1571648ITV racing. The retarded midgets don’t get it do they?
Its all “its not me guv! im a nice person!” (even if I refused to speak to a bullied and flashed at young female in the dressing room for months because she wouldn’t accept being called a whore and a slut)
Fair play to Francesca for putting thick Mick on the spot
December 10, 2021 at 14:54 #1571649PJA bloke on the tv still stating the ” Briony felt bullied..” rather than she was bullied. Hmm, really…??
December 10, 2021 at 15:03 #1571650Where were these jockey’s that are so upset/offended by the use of the word rancid (Charlie Deutsch referenced it in his interview immediately after winning the 2:25 at Cheltenham today) when describing the weighing room culture when Bryony was on the receiving end of this continued abuse – probably keeping their heads down pretending nothing was happening or just chalking it up to banter or using the see no evil hear no evil standpoint.
Yes I am sure there are people within the weighing room that are decent people and shouldn’t be tarred with the same brush but they all had multiple chances to stand up in support of a fellow colleague to police this issue (as we are told they do) and for the most part all Bryony got was the sound of crickets chirping.
Even right now the Chairman of PJA Jon Holmes has just been on ITV Racing and stated ‘We accept that Bryony felt she was bullied’ er no….she was bullied plain and simple, that is just the answer you get from people that don’t accept the truth and try to put the blame on the individual for incorrectly thinking something has happened.
Doesn’t bode well
December 10, 2021 at 15:11 #1571652“a possible appeal which would be madness IMHO as it would mean weeks more of horrendous publicity”
Indeed, though sounds like he’s going for it. No doubt this is the reason for the PJA bleating on about him supposedly not getting a fair hearing as this is the only possible defence. Grounds for “unfair” would seem pretty weak in terms of overthrowing the verdict, but could make for a compensation case against the BHA.
December 10, 2021 at 15:15 #1571653Just a woeful response from the PJA/jockeys. Amazing they can be so hurt at being called “rancid” when calling Frost far worse was simply part of weighing room culture.
Well done to Francesca, Mick is another person I’d have expected a better response from.
December 10, 2021 at 15:15 #1571655Monkeys aka Planet of the Apes can be trained to ride horses and will ride for peanuts, but they will not do the all important interviews after the race. They could give facial expressions I suppose indicating something like **** off.
We next turn to AI where allure and frankieness are untapped. Whether a robot could leap off a horse will come in 10 years but in the immediate future we can see the rules bring bent possibly with a he, she or it or they, and no sauna.

The little men (in every sense of the word) bawling about being called horrible names
December 10, 2021 at 15:23 #1571659If only Robbie Dunne had access to all those hands one of the problems could have been avoided
December 10, 2021 at 15:36 #1571663Can “It’s only banter” ever be true?
Friends could sometimes call me a “ginger ….” and I might laugh, so I’d say yes…
And in my experience it would sometimes depend on the tone of voice. I say “sometimes” because sometimes something can be said in a jovial manner usually (but not always) between friends and nothing detrimental is meant. However, trouble is the same jovial tone can be meant as an insult in a very detrimental way, especially if the bully is persistent. People often get away with bullying by using a jovial manner – especially in macho environments – because others who would normally step in don’t realise the bully’s intentions and / or don’t step in because others are not stepping in. Possibly not seeing the victim is upset and / or wrongly thinking the victim is making too much of it or “doesn’t have a sense of humour”.However – although it is easy to say in hindsight – they should have seen what was happening in Bryony’s case.
