….in my opinion, anyway.
Heaviest ground I have ever seen and standing water even before the first race.
I enjoyed it in a surreal way, actually, and thankfully I don’t think any horses were hurt, but I’ve seen point-to-points abandoned with better ground than that.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 23, 2015 at 02:11 #751970I have seen races run on far worse ground in Ireland!
February 23, 2015 at 02:53 #751971I remember the Sweeps Hurdle in Leopardstown in 1979, in those days a handicap run after Xmas. It was absolutely bucketing down, the course was waterlogged, and people were saying if it was any other meeting, in any other country, it would be abandoned. Monksfield carried top-weight (12st) and was third behind Rathinree (10-5)
February 23, 2015 at 06:28 #751976I just took a look at the going allowances, when working on the speed figures for Fontwell.
The first 3 races -1.42s/f (heavy)
The last 4 races -1.96s/f (heavy)Anything above -1.58s/f goes off the scale, and unlike French racing, they still have 3 extra going descriptions.
Heavy to very heavy – Lourd a tres lourd
Very Heavy – Tres lourd
Deep – ProfondThe worst going allowance I have ever recorded, was at at Flos Las on the hurdles course, and that was -2.75s/f (deep), so you could say, the going yesterday at Fontwell was on the quick side compared to that.

Turf going allowance table:
Firm +0.55s/f to +0.63s/f
Good/firm +0.20s/f to +0.53s/f
Good -0.25s/f to +0.18s/f
Good/soft -0.55s/f to -0.28s/f
Soft -1.00s/f to -0.58s/f
Heavy -1.58s/f to -1.03s/fMike.
February 23, 2015 at 09:49 #751982It didn’t look good, but in terms of average sec/furlong (16.57 s/f) it wasn’t even the slowest jumps meeting yesterday (Southwell was) and is outside the "top" 25 since October. Lingfield on 16 Feb is well clear with 18.38 s/f.
Aware that such things should be adjusted for ability, distance (real, not imagined) etc, but I think it provides some sort of illustration that the runners were (to borrow a cliche) "going through it"

You are right about Lingfield on the 16th Feb Simon.
Hurdles -2.55s/f
Chase -2.20s/fOn the subject of ability, I use a class variable with my lbs per length figures, ref standard times list below.
I have records for every meeting going back to Jan 2013, ref column "H", you will also find a notepad with my going allowance tables.
Column "N" is hidden, these are my raw speed figures before adjustment.Mike.
February 23, 2015 at 14:43 #752007Ahh, lads! You should have been at Cheltenham the day Ten Up won his Gold Cup (1975). Never saw anything like it. They abandoned after the Gold Cup

Brown Lad had won the 3 mile hurdle in a canter the day before, and was due to turn out again in the 3-mile novice chase
