Any recommendations for a flat horse trainer based in Scotland or North England, and just as importantly why would you choose this trainer?
For a miler if that helps narrow it down.
Thxs.
February 24, 2011 at 18:46 #342053Richard Fahey – because I can’t think of a better trainer in the country never mind just in the north.
February 24, 2011 at 19:20 #342058Tuffers,
Can’t disagree with Fahey. Any others though – smaller strings and/or bit less expensive (I’m assuming Fahey adds a small premium given his track record).
Any you rate that are "on the up", a bit lower profile than Mr Fahey?
Thxs.
February 24, 2011 at 19:32 #342059I don’t know anything about him but David O’Meara is based in N Yorks; has a smallish string; and a perfectly acceptable strike rate of 17% over the last 5 seasons.
Edit: the RP site refers to his 5 season record but it looks as though he only started training in his own right last year having previously been assistant to James Hetherton.
February 24, 2011 at 20:20 #342073Thanks Tuffers,
Again couldn’t disagree with that choice.
February 24, 2011 at 21:47 #342083Brian Ellison well worth looking at these days. Always has his horses in the right races, and a glance at what he achieved in 2010 with horses like Camerooney and Pendragon was outstanding. Not to mention the exploits in both codes of the likes of Don’tpaytheferryman. If your horse is capable of winning races, Brian Ellison will make sure it does.
February 24, 2011 at 22:36 #342095Ann Duffield seems to have a good set up at Constable Burton near Middleham, N. Yorks. Owner friendly, good record with 2yos lately. Not overly large stable and horses well looked after, husband George is chief workrider. MPR like to have a few horses with her also and have done well.
February 24, 2011 at 22:56 #342099Would be O’Meara for me too – a friend of mine has a horse in training as he’s a good friend of O’Meara’s backer and the owner of the stables he trains from (Roger Fell).
There’s not a better young trainer in the country IMO and you’ll have the best jockey in the North riding most of the time (if last season is anything to go by).
Wouldn’t put you off Ellison either though.
February 25, 2011 at 11:18 #342133Mark Johnston
February 25, 2011 at 11:46 #342137Fahey and Johnston would be the proven pair for sure. O’Meara is a good shout they pulled off some good results last season and as said the extra advantage of having de Sousa on board. It will be interesting to see whether they can continue that good run now that some of their horses will be higher rated. Another who has impressed me with the placing of his horses is Ollie Pears, he seems to know exactly how well his horses are rated.
February 25, 2011 at 18:21 #342180May find Johnston a bit pricey depending on the size of your wallet:-
February 25, 2011 at 20:21 #342195Thanks Guys,
Ellison, O’Meara and Pears all catch my eye. M Johnston good but too pricey!
Any thoughts on Alistair Whillans?
February 25, 2011 at 20:28 #342197With out a doubt Richard Fahey.
He LOVES his horses, has a god given gift of knowing what your horse could achieve & ain’t shy of telling you – politely, usually!
Cracking good laugh as well.
February 25, 2011 at 21:15 #342213Scottish Voice,
You enjoying your role with Love the Races?
February 26, 2011 at 16:09 #342345Fahey would be top of my list as well by a long way. Johnston pretty tough on his horses so it needs to be tough to survive there.
On a lower lever, Noel Wilson has been doing well and is a nice guy (I did the trainers courses with him and he seems to know what hes talking about!
)May 27, 2011 at 21:59 #357542Who did you go for in the end OD?
May 28, 2011 at 17:16 #357680We went for Alistair Whillans. Horse is Euston Square by the way, it’s fair to say he’s enjoyed the change of scenery if you check out his last 2 runs.
David O’Meara and Ollie Pears were certainly 2 we considered but as we are Scotland based that swung it for AW, alongside a good track record and decent strike rate of course.
If you are looking for a relatively small dual purpose yard in the North then seriously consider A Whillans.
ES hopefully runs Fri night at Donnie if the ground remains good or better.
