Some interesting early season developments:
1. Despite riding lots of horses SDS is already out of the contest owing to his very low strike rate. I feel sorry for him. He is riding low quality stuff most of the time.
2. William Buick is doing very well.
3. Richard Hughes is gaining fast post his suspension, backed by the power of the Hannon stable.
4. Ryan Moore is doing exceptionally well considering the paucity of good Stoute horses.
5.Paul Hanagan seems to have managed the transition to the big time better than SDS and is still riding a lot of winners for Richard Fahey.
6. Keiran Fallon appears to be a spent force.
Market odds look about right. Hughes is maybe better value than Moore. Hughes is about 20 behind Moore but he is probably more motivated and will have lots of Hannon two year olds to ride later on.
June 12, 2012 at 22:32 #407887Unless Ryan Moore sustains a severe injury he will not even have to break sweat to regain the title.
June 17, 2012 at 21:17 #408423I backed Ryan Moore ante post, but think Richard Hughes is a real danger and is good value at 4/1. I’ll be backing him tomorrow
August 9, 2012 at 09:18 #409310The momentum is certainly on the camp Hughes side, glad I got on in time.

August 12, 2012 at 08:41 #409574What do you purpose he does about it? Perhaps he could become an estate agent or learn law.

When the opportunities arrive Richard will be ready as was the case in the Nassau.
Maybe he’s had a hefty bet on himself being champion….

August 12, 2012 at 08:57 #409575Andy’s point has some mileage. Mr Hughes has ridden very few group 1 winners, no English Classic winners and last week’s victory aboard The Fugue was his first top level success at further than a mile in this country. As stable jockey to Richard Hannon he is less likely to have the chance to ride top class 12f horses because that is not the trainer’s metier.
His brief stint as Khaild Abdulla’s retained jockey showed his limitations. He is a good jockey, with the backing of one of the most prolific stables in the country he has the firepower to become champion if that is his ambition. However, a world class jockey he is not.August 12, 2012 at 09:17 #409577Andy’s point has some mileage. Hughes had the Abdulla retainer for 7 years- hardly a "brief stint".
At that time Juddmonte’s best European horses were in France and Hughes won their classics on them:-http://www.racingpost.com/horses/jockey … y_id=3793#
Also at that time likes of the Henry Cecil yard were in deep depression which the yard only emerged from with the emergence of the likes of Passage of Time, which Hughes won on as his stint as Juddmonte retained rider was coming to an end.
True that the Hannon yard has few classic contenders over a mile which limits Hughes’s options.
Remember also that Hughes was an alcoholic and admitted that for a while he was getting out ridden by Ryan Moore who was getting many Hannon rides.
August 12, 2012 at 21:18 #409629I don’t see what relevance winning enough group 1 races at his age makes on his chances of winning the jockeys title this year.

August 15, 2012 at 21:13 #409884It is irrelevant. The championship is simply a numbers game.
Incidentally Hughes begins a 5 day ban starting on Sat when many of his Hannon rides will go to Moore. Would still want my money on Hughes though if he can stay out of the stewards roomSeptember 20, 2012 at 08:37 #413746A 6 timer yesterday for Mr Hughes. I make it 34 ahead of Moore and 37 ahead of De Sousa with 52 days to go. Game over?

September 20, 2012 at 11:25 #413758It was over a long time ago. Interesting how initially bookmakers kept Hughes short despite the initial ban. Even if he had been riding I doubt whether Moore would have bothered to put the effort in. Probably be someone elses turn next year. The whole thing is blown out of proportion and has had little to do with quality since the days of Piggott, Carson and Eddery.
August 5, 2013 at 17:18 #447710I’ve lost count of how many Group 1 wins old man Hughes has now won oh and a double classic winner to boot, good job he didn’t retire, eh?

August 5, 2013 at 23:15 #447729Would riding Frankel make up for it? Champion jockeys come and go.

Richard does not seem to ride the Group One winners that will bring in the money in his old age?
Ever Since
G1 Moyglare – Sky Lantern
G1 Prix Jean Luc Lugardere – Olympic Glory
G1 1000 Guineas – Sky Lantern
G1 Epsom Oaks – Talent
G1 Coronation Stakes – Sky Lantern
G1 Sussex Stakes – ToronadoNot bad really is it. Plus the mental effort required to win a jockeys championship which barring accidents will be regained. Must try harder Andyod…..

Would riding Frankel make up for what, exactly?
