Theirs is another kind, they are called point too points.
May 12, 2009 at 14:18 #227096other than the scottish meetings at hawick, langholm, selkirk and irvine are there any other flapping meetings in the UK?
May 12, 2009 at 15:58 #227112My brother had pitches at a few of the flapping meetings up here years ago. Great fun and an education on how to make a book when all runners were owned, trained and ridden by a bunch of conmen.
One day we worked at the Merrymas at Irvine in Ayrshire close to the old Bogside racecourse. A grey horse won the first race by a mile and then turned out for a later race but this time it was almost black! It started raining when the runners were parading and the dye washed off!
I was just thinking what it would be like being a bookie there.. with all those hard nosed con men around . I guess even the best laid plans go astray and thats where the bookie cleans up eh. I think the word flapping refered to the way the amature jockey rode, flapping arms etc.

Nice site mate love those 3 pics of Hawick Moor or Mair as they say in the Borders. Had many a good time racing horses round there with my friends when no one was around.
Would love to over in June for the Common Riding and try my hand at grabbing some snuff….would need a few rum and milks first though
May 12, 2009 at 16:47 #227124Fist i took part in most of the common ride in the borders and musselburgh about 20 yrs ago…….I’m still recovering!
May 12, 2009 at 22:35 #227171The standard of horse and prize money at some JC approved tracks these days is getting close to the ‘flapping scene’

I agree … You are getting £ 250,000 horses running at Warwick for £1500 ( from the Arabs) and not scraping up any prizes , that really makes one wonder what is this racing all about.
I guess racing is a big leveller the cost of a horse doesn t prove anything. In fact I love it when something that costs a 1000 gns beats one that was bought for 100,000. It goes to show that with all the top flight breeding money doesn t guarantee you anything.Running highly priced horses for poor money makes no sense to me , cos if they dont deliver, their price drops and so does their breeding value.
Snaffi Dancer cost over 10 million ( i think) and was cleverly never allowed to race because they say he wasn t good enough to set foot on a racecourse. He was obvoiusly worth more in POTENTIAL than in FACT.May 13, 2009 at 20:28 #227397Yes racing is getting into a sorry state.

our big race was run at the hawick common riding first friday in june and was worth £3000 to the winner which was eventually won by welsh owner brian clark and ridden by recent flat jockey tyrone williams who gave up his licence to return to flapping. over the past couple of years flapping in scotland has started to increase with the number of runners and is becoming more and more competative, there was a horse run in the race that was 3rd in the wokingham called high reach and a runner from ireland called purple emperor that was bought from godolphin this horse had been running in £300,000 races in nada al sheba so anyone that thinks flapping is for banded grade horses think again.
also as for people saying it is all conmen running horses this is also untrue as our rules and regulations are strict this is why we have got more and more horses coming flapping every year. all new horses are passport checked before they enter the paddock and micro chips scanned with the numbers being logged then scanned again after the race..
next meeting is saturday 27th at 2pm at hawick in the scottish borders. more info can be obtained at http://www.langholmhorseracing.co.uk
feel free to ask any questions
June 22, 2009 at 23:57 #235855Can you tell me who commentates at the Flapping meetings at the Scottish tracks? Was at couple of meetings at Irvine Moor & the guy was sound, very slick. Is it the same commentator at all the Flapping meetings?

June 23, 2009 at 23:45 #236019Is there any truth to the rumour that Newmarket Story (who won hard held at 66/1 at Lingfield on 4th June from 26lb out the handicap) had won a couple of valuable flapping races in Ireland under another name?

chances of that happening are very slim, every new horse that runs are passport checked and micro chips scanned with the numbers been recorded. if this did hapen then the owner, jockey and trainer would be fined a huge amount of money. it happened once many years ago before flapping was as strict with the rules with a horse called short and sweet trained in richmond, they were fined in excess of £10000 and banned from flapping and racing under jockey club rules. this gave flapping a bad name this is the reason we are very strict now with our rules.
August 2, 2009 at 01:15 #242194More & more interest and horses – good crowds at Langholm CR. Where is next meeting to be?
