since betfair has entered the market.

the levy has failed to keep abreast of inflation,
put whatever spin you like on it.

    its a fact.

The number for the year ended March 2008 was inflated by a couple of huge losing high rollers, customers of Ladbrokes. Once they (or "he" if it was one person, as rumoured) disappeared, it was inevitable the Levy would decline to some extent.

How many high rollers wre there? I guess we’ll never know.

I was debating this with my old mucker Brendan Kirwan the other day. His theory was that there was only one but he had some clones.

The following figs from the Levy Board website suggest that Levy collection had outperformed inflation since BF’s arrival.

    2007/08 115.3
    2006/07 99.2
    2005/06 99.3
    2004/05 105.6
    2003/04 110.7
    2002/03 79.9
    2001/02 72.9
    2000/01 60.3
    1999/00 59.4

Frankly I really don’t understand why racing feels it must be subsidised by the bookmakers. Like any other sport it should financially stand on it’s own feet and be supported by customers through the turnstiles, tote earnings,TV rights, sponsorship diversity and all the ploys that other professional entertainments/sports use to keep going. After all bookmakers bet on the football leagues but they manage to run with a levy payment what’s different about racing? This may be a bit revolutionary because they’ll then have to start listening to the paying customers for a change instead of treating them like cannon fodder but then that’s life and if some or even a lot go to the wall it will enhance life for the remainder.Sorry chaps but I’m sick of this whining about levies reality has to be faced one day as our politians and of course all of us are about to find out. I’m also sick of the whining about prize money as Alan says the answer is simple if you don’t like it get out but don’t beat me up about it.
