Hihihi, I’ve left some of my very best braincells there over the years!

I think you might find some of mine in there as well.

I know it happened at the racetrack rather than in the stables, but in light of what happened to Chris Kinane you’d think people’s first inclination would be to protect themselves from something similar.

Horses are not cuddly. They bite. They kick. Leaving yourself too exposed in the face of the very worst of their behavioural traits strikes me as daft when protective measures are available. Indeed, having seen a few near-misses wrought by indisciplined or plain nervous maidens at several point-to-point meetings this year, I wouldn’t regard the issuing of the vests for lads and lasses leading horses in the parade ring as anything of an over-reaction, either.

    gc

I agree entirely. I have been wearing a body protector since I started riding out again last November. I certainly think skull caps should be worn by staff leading up at the races and ‘safety vests’ (as we are now supposed to call them) would be a good idea too.
I imagine there was a fairly similar uproar when wearing hats to ride became compulsory. Some disgruntled employee felt the need to suggest in the RP that vests would result in staff becoming unwell because they cause dehydration. If that’s the best they can come up with….
My greatest concern is that staff are required to wear a minimum level 1 vest which, in truth, are designed solely for jockeys so they can keep their weight down. A level 1 is not really suitable for riding out on the roads or fast work on the gallops. They should only be worn by trained jockeys.

Anyway, I digress from the point of the thread somewhat.
Don’t smoke. It’ll kill you and you’ll get fined.

All this hullabaloo about passive smoke, why dont we ban all cars off the road. For instance how long does it take when there is a hose attached to your exhaust pipe running through your car window, for you to die ?, my estimated guess about half hour, now try committing suicide with your car full of smokers, breathing in their passive smoke, you will soon have a change of heart, you would probably travel the world ten times over before you eventually succumb, maybe you might even die of natural causes. So moral of story, car exhausts are much more damaging to your health than cigarette smoke, you breath it in everyday on the busy streets of our towns and cities.
Michael Martin, the then Irish health minister, who introduced it to Ireland probably the biggest pub driven society in the world, is number one on my assassination list, if I am diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, for denying me my biggest pleasure in life, my pint and my cigarette in hand. Sex was never gauranteed, and the pleasure it gives me is only intermittent.
Incidently the smoke ban, was a smoke screen for the total mess he left the Irish health system. And he gets a European award for his smoke ban,
    I despair !
Excuse me I am off for a smoke.

Interesting point about all those selfish car drivers .. I wonder why we don’t hear anything in this country about proper air pollution?

This is beacause exhaust fumes are full of things like carbon dioxide and monoxide, which pollute the blood in your body, stop it carrying oxygen about and will eventually kill you. Small doses of CO are found in air all over the place, and as long as you are in a sufficiently ventilated atmosphere, your respiratory system will get rid of it as soon as it enters. Cigarette smoke is full of carcinogens, amongst other really foul stuff like formaldehyde, which was used in enbalming IIRC.

Basically, as long as you know that suffocation kills you faster than cancer, then what you posted shouldn’t surprise you.

Justifying cigarette emissions on the grounds they might kill you slower than exhaust fumes is like asserting that lung cancer is a better thing to have than bowel cancer because it won’t hurt as much when you crap. The issue is not that one of the two pollutants you cited could finish you off quicker than the other, but rather that either could finish you off at all.

As I add to both types by driving a car not compliant with the Euro4 Emission Standard and by having the occasional relapse with the ciggies, I can’t have too many complaints about either.

Awwww, small violin for Marz, I think! The pleasure of sex is only as limited as the practitioners’ imaginations, surely?

I’m a smoker and it’s an inconvenience having to go outside the pub for a smoke in the winter. It’s not so bad in the summer, if we ever get one again.
Waking up the morning after without the horrible smell all over your clothes
can only be a good thing and non smokers shouldn’t have to breath in the toxins we smokers self inflict on ourselves.
We’ve had the smoking ban a while here in Ireland and generally I think it’s a good thing……although I never realised how much tobacco smoke masked the smell of flatulence.

I’ll take it your a non smoker then Friggo, or worse again an ex smoker, every human being has a weakness, be it chocolate, alcohol/cigarettes, drugs, gambling, or an insatiable sexual apetite like Grasshopper. I have a weakness for everyone of the a/m, except the class a drugs, and I feel no shame, I hate been told what to do by a bunch of Mary Poppins who are just looking for political brownie points.

Cigarette packets now carry imagery accompanied by the warning that "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death"
In this day and age, no person needs to suffer pain during a terminal illness. Drugs are available to assist the dying to be free of pain. This advertisement suggests otherwise and highlights the fact that not enough effort is made within the NHS in alleviating the suffering of the dying.

It’s always struck me as ridiculous that a product is sold with a warning such as "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death" !

If it’s so bad why not just ban it?

As a non-smoker I suppose I’m on the outside looking in, and I know it’s not that simple, but…..

Ten years on, since the NuLabour decided to embark on their anti-smoking campaign and there are more kids smoking now than there were 20 years ago. Good to see a plan coming together.

I think the photographs are more about creating an environment for tax raising powers rather than getting everyone to stop. Like Rob says, ‘if they were that bad they would just ban them.’

Good point though Ken, the amount of tax smokers pay should entitle them all to free private health care.
