Could any of you data gurus help me with an enquiry into average field sizes?
I would like to know what the average field size in UK was in 2009 for a) all Flat races, and b) all jumps races. And I would like the same separately for 2010 up to the end of August 8th.
The stats on the BHA website (http://www.britishhorseracing.com/resou … istics.asp) oddly seem not to go beyond 2008.

Those are surprisingly low figures compared with less than 10 years ago.
As someone just pointed out to me, the % of races with 16+ runners on the Flat has gone from 18% in 1999, to 13% in 2004 to, get this, 4% in 2009.
Not all of ’em handicaps, of course.
August 9, 2010 at 17:41 #31189116+ runners made up 14% of all handicaps run in 1997
16+ runners made up 5% of all handicaps run in 2010 (so far)August 9, 2010 at 18:49 #311898Surely a price worth paying for ‘eradicating’ the draw bias on Lingfield’s straight course.

16+ runners made up 5% of all handicaps run in 2010 (so far)I’m thinking that might be the bookies influence. e/w terms for 16+ runners & all that.
Might be wrong mind.
August 9, 2010 at 19:10 #311900Nah, say it ain’t so.
August 12, 2010 at 09:08 #312353Would that be actual or intended runners. For 2010 from a database I update which is mainly weekdays only I have the following
Intended runners
Flat – 89/1416 = 6.29%
NH – 63/560 = 11.25%Actual runners
Flat – 39/1416 = 2.75%
NH – 44/560 = 7.86%It’s quite staggering that on the flat a 16+ handicap in your morning paper is more likely to be 3 places only by the time of the off.
Would your complete database show similar CR ?
