Please, please let it not be Emily Jones or Zoe Bird.
Emily Jones was even sniffing just then.
June 12, 2011 at 16:21 #360318Hayley Moore wins the second semi-final.
She was best on the day although if Katie Stephens had not messed up the finish of her race then it may have been different.
June 12, 2011 at 16:50 #360324I thought they said that racegoers would have a vote?
Can understand concerns re- family voting. It’s quite easy for soemone to organise a decent turn-out on a text vote. That’s why us Scots always do well (i.e. better than we should) in the X-Factor/BGT etc.
June 12, 2011 at 18:07 #360338Thought todays were much of a muchness whereas Rachel Casey stood out yesterday, may have been better if they’d all had to do a big field at Donny rather than a few runners at Bath.
June 12, 2011 at 20:05 #360356A heartfelt well done to all involved in the competition.
To put yourself in that public arena off the back off the back of such a tight timescale and lack of PA practise requires a lot of nerve especially given the field sizes at Doncaster today.
Hopefully it will act as an encoursgement from anyone who is interested in calling male or female to get practising.
At least Rachel and Hayley now have a more realistic timescale to prepare for Ascot and with some experience under their belts as well.
July 24, 2011 at 10:06 #365625How bizarre to decide the contest by text between 3.00 and 4.30. Would have thought the one with more family and friends will win based on that.
Presumably as the result is being announced on ATR after the 5th race the commentaries will be broadcast on ATR to enable viewers to judge.
I would be surprised if Casey doesn’t do the better commentaries.July 24, 2011 at 21:49 #365686Hayley Moore got the call, if you pardon the pun, and most probably by virtue of fact that she is Ryan’s sister. The Irish girl was better and should have got the nod – but truth be told, neither are that good.
Hayley Moore’s winning commentary was cringeworthy and embarrassing – I’m sorry, but it was. Enthusiatic, maybe – but amateurish nevertheless.
For me, she needs to up her game big time.Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
July 25, 2011 at 07:09 #365722Both the finalists performed credibly – provided you take their total inexperience into account, As to whether they should have been let loose on the public I think my views on that are already well documented.
At least the entire contest did not turn into the car crash it could easily have been.
Interestingly the vexed issue of "voice pitch" was very significant yesterday. In the sprint especially, Rachel Casey’s commentary was completely lost on-course when the crowd noise ramped up – it was not so pronounced when I heard the replay on TV – but you just could not hear the final half furlong’s commentary at all in front of the stands.
I though Rachel was marginally better on the day – there was little to choose between their second commentaries but in the sprints Rachel edged it for me with a much more fluent call.
In the end it was a fun day at Ascot yesterday and it did provide an antidote and some light relief after the terrible day we had there on Saturday.
July 25, 2011 at 12:35 #365758Although she didn’t win I think Rachel has some potential in horse race broadcasting, nice voice and good knowledge. Would certainly be an improvement on one or two females who’ve been doing it for years on C4.
July 25, 2011 at 18:46 #365801For me Rachel was the much better caller.
Best thing would be for her to call some Greyhound races and also work on Trotting and Point to Points to get some experience in the business.
It was an interesting concept but maybe it should have been open to all commentating wannabes though as opposed to just women.

For me, Hayley shaded it fairly on (1) vocal quality, as it was possible to listen to her in the final furlong without cringing, (2) clarity and articulacy, and (3) giving us a little bit more in the way of description of how the horses were being ridden. She also had slightly more sense of seeing the wood for the trees – in other words, a little more confidence and command.
In truth, both were rather disappointing. Had either of them prepared for the acid test by practising at home with the sound turned down? It didn’t sound like it, from all those hiatuses and stumbles.
July 26, 2011 at 06:54 #365841Both very poor, neither has any chance of making it as a commentator.
Rather a curious coincidence that the winner should happen to be the sister of a champion jockey.

Who claimed it
was
a coincidence?
Vox pop
voting is bound to result in famous names getting a leg up, by the nature of things. Ms Moore was best of the bad bunch, though, and away from the pressure of such a false "showdown" would probably be OK for Catterick or Cartmel, given time and tuition.
July 26, 2011 at 08:47 #365846Only listened to them once and would just give the edge to Rachel based on her being a bit more natural. No reason to believe two males plucked from relative obscurity would do any better, it must be very hard to get it right immediately. Hayley overdid the colours for me, maybe she could give lessons to Dessie on the subject.
Judging from this photo of the two Rachel appears to have her future in front of her. http://yfrog.com/khvc6eljJuly 26, 2011 at 10:22 #365854Judging from this photo of the two Rachel appears to have her future in front of her. http://yfrog.com/khvc6elj
Must admit I took a very nice side-on picture of her
August 1, 2011 at 00:32 #366752Would rather listen to Rachel Casey or Laura McGimpsey than Iain McKenzie or Mark Slater any day of the week!
Quick question: Has Graham Goode finally retired? Can’t remember hearing him for ages. - AuthorPosts
