Getting a horse fit first time out is something trainers do much better now but that is (to me) a mindset change because back in the day trainers would very rarely have a horse 100% fit first time out – it was the old addage of being ‘fit enough to do themselves justice, with something to build upon for bigger targets later in the season’

You could also argue that both Lammtarra & Shaamit improved for their follow up run in their respective King Georges that Lammtarra won beating Pentire a nk whereas Shaamit finished 3rd 2L behind the same horse but both represented better form than their Derby wins.

King of Steel’s improvement will likely come from gaining experience and strengthening up into that large frame of his – I could see him really coming into his own not only as the season progresses but for next season too if owners went that way….which may be more likely having not won the Derby.

That being said I wouldn’t think it would be a problem going back to 10F if they decided that is what they want to do but races like the Irish Derby, King George and the real French Derby the Grand Prix de Paris would be races I would be targetting myself rather than say the Eclipse or Juddmonte…you can always try 10F next season.

King Of Steel may well be equally effective at 1m2f and maybe breeders do like a 1m2f Group 1 on a stallion’s cv. But so does having the best three year old middle distance horse look good on a cv and probably easier to achieve than Eclipse victory. Haven’t looked at the betting yet but the Eclipse will probably be much more competitive – appears a good 4yo crop. In contrast the Irish Derby on paper looks a two horse race… And – as long as it’s similar ground – I’d go there if owning him. Given his inexperience and physique KOS has potential to improve again. For sure he’d be second favourite but – if connections believe he’ll progress – then why not go to Ireland and pretty much prove your colt the best three year old middle distance horse?

I’m not sure King Of Steel was outstayed he was just beaten by a better horse. They both stay the distance it is just one did it quicker than t’other.

The more I know the less I understand.

I think the Arrest formline suffered a total breakdown today with Adelaide River, Dubai Mile and Arrest himself finishing a length within each other. But still 17-18 lengths behind the front pair.

As already stated Shadwell has a couple of decent 10 furlong performer aged four and the Gosden stable won’t be short of talent for that category either. I seriously think Emily Upjohn could win an Eclipse or even the Juddmonte.

Possibly not “outstayed” as such RTB
But I think KOS has less stamina than AR. In as much as: If it were a 1m4f race on soft going I doubt KOS would be as effective. Where as am fairly certain AR would stay it well.

If it came up soft in Ireland could Arrest still be a contender?
Patently didn’t act on the ground today.

I think Arrest wasn’t the first horse to sweat before the race, became unbalanced and simply not handle the track. Quite sure the fast ground was against him, but it was true racing ground and no excuses accepted about this fact.

If the ground came up soft at the Curragh I’m quite sure they’d go for it. But, I expect Aidan to send his best hors(es) to the Curragh. Since the Irish Derby would be a “softer” target than the Eclipse and the KG, why not go for the Derby Double?

No such thing as a Derby double, through a single season there is only one Derby the one run at Epsom I really don’t care about the Curragh equivalent.

The more I know the less I understand.

    Irish Derby winners…..
Looking back at the past ten years or so there aren’t many with a decent stud value.
Jack Hobbs is a NH stallion standing at a fee of three grand at Overbury Stud, Harzand an Epsom and Irish Derby winner stands at 5,000 Euros, Latrobe at 4,000 Euros and Australia at 25,000 Euros with Coolmore.
Sovereign is apparently not at stud, Capri stands at 2,500 Euros and Santiago at 4,000 Euros.

I guess an Irish Derby might not be the best reference on your sire’s CV.

Very sad to see the fall in the pecking order of the Irish Derby. Some brilliant winners like generous,st jovite, monjeu to name a few. Think the winner will go though then hopefully the king George. Probably be the juddmonte, I suspect.

King Of Steel had a very hard race to my eye. He is huge at 17.2 and 575 kilos. Could take him a long time to get over that.

Even allowing for the usual Coolmore hype, I suspect the winner is very good. Ran gun barrel straight on the camber despite being under a right hand drive. Logged just a touch over 33s for the last 3 furlongs despite being ridden for only just over a furlong of that lest he hit the front too soon. And I doubt he had reached top speed even at the post. Exciting prospect.

It’s notable that AUSTRALIA is the only one of that bunch to subsequently win a 10f G1.

Agree Auguste Rodin is an exciting prospect. We had better enjoy him while we can because I doubt he will be in training as a 4 year old.

Even allowing for O’Brien’s sales patter, it is clear Coolmore think they have something special and valuable on their hands. Despite Galileo being his maternal grand dam, presumably he is far enough back in his pedigree for him to be seen as a suitable stallion prospect for all their Galileo mares.

I don’t think Auguste Rodin was ever going to Doncaster.

The only reason they went the Triple Crown route with Camelot was to swerve getting hammered by Frankel.

I will be genuinely surprised if Auguste Rodin rocks up on Town Moor now.

The world has changed – in 2001 Galileo went, Irish Derby, King George, but since then Australia IMO significantly went Irish Derby, International Stakes instead.

I think Auguste Rodin will too – “F” the St Leger, “F” even the King George or even the Arc – they will really want to win an International Stakes or an Irish Champion Stakes with him to maximise his stud fee.

Yes I’d imagine there mission now is win a group 1 over 10f then retire to stud at the end of the season

As a deep impact/galileo cross of the best Japanese and British sires he could be very valuable to them

Wherever he runs over 10f he won’t be getting an easy win as adayar, bay bridge, luxembourg, desert crown, emily upjohn and my prospero are all very useful

They’re surely going to struggle to keep King of Steel sound. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a huge flat horse.
