Youth Spirit looks plenty big enough for this at 33’s. Won the Vase handy enough, and was always likely to need a trip, being a Camelot out of a Fastnet Rock mare. Some handy looking 2yo form at trips which always would have been on the short side for this lad.
Bit of rain wouldn’t go amiss mind, but the price still looks a bit of an insult to me.

May 31, 2021 at 23:21 #1542900After Serpentine, Khalifa Sat & Amrhan Na Where Is He Now last year TTC, I certainly wouldn’t put you off Youth Spirit e/way. But on collateral Newmarket form through Secret Protector & Highland Avenue, Youth Spirit looks miles behind Mohaafeth, unless he’s come on a ton. Good luck anyway.
June 1, 2021 at 10:26 #1542924Note got a particular view on the race yet, I’ll put in my tuppence worth at final declaration stage. However a warning that when I hear the phrase “The 242nd running of the Cazoo Derby”, and I’m sure I will, everyone on here will hear me scream!
June 1, 2021 at 10:28 #1542925I was reading “Racing Ahead” magazine yesterday and an article continually referred to the Epsom Derby and Epsom Oaks.
June 1, 2021 at 11:24 #1542929Van Gogh left in todays entries for the French Derby. One Ruler taken out.
June 1, 2021 at 19:26 #1542985The Mediterranean declared for Nijinksy Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday so that is 1 less for Aidan O’Brien
June 2, 2021 at 13:02 #1543055I like something that has won LTO, over at least 10f. This means High Definition, Mac Swiney, One Ruler, Van Gogh, Adayar, Southern Lights, Gear Up, Kyprios, Mojo Star & Seattle Sound are excluded.
A dangerous strategy which has failed before on various occasions, but I narrow things down further by omitting anything which is not a 1st string. So The Meditteranian and Sir Lamorak are excluded, hopefully this is not too risky as The Meditteranian perhaps doesn’t go, and Sir Lamoraks latest run was much longer ago than traditionally ideal.
11/12 of previous winners have been rated 108 or higher, so John Leeper is reluctantly omitted. I would have potentially seen past this 1lb below required rating if Hollie Doyle was up, but I’m happier leaving him out with Kirby up as I’m not a fan.
I’m down to a shortlist of Bolshoi Ballet, Hurricane Lane, Mohaafeth, Third Realm, Youth Spirit & Lone Eagle.
I’ll await the draw, which will hopefully narrow it down further for me.

June 2, 2021 at 16:51 #1543082I would add High Definition to the shortlist. If any horse in the field will improve for the step up in distance it will be him. Although he will have to improve a lot to beat the favourite. Maybe he will be more of a Leger horse.
The one I cannot have is John Leeper – so watch him win by half the track now! ;-). He looked all at sea in the dip at Newmarket. I cannot see him handling the track. Looks like more of a late season horse and a much better 4 year old.
June 2, 2021 at 17:01 #1543083Maybe hold off on adding High Definition…
June 2, 2021 at 17:06 #1543085Bolshoi Ballet looking like Aidan’s only runner. Interesting….
June 2, 2021 at 17:19 #1543087Listen and the Lads have really taken the piss here. I am not affected thankfully.

June 2, 2021 at 17:22 #1543088Given how he praised high definition in an interview the other day that is a joke
June 2, 2021 at 17:38 #1543089Bloody hell, Nicky Henderson would of been proud of that one.
June 2, 2021 at 17:49 #1543092Oh well, glad I did not back him ante-post. Bit of a kick in the teeth for anyone who did.
If Bolshoi Ballet is going to be their only runner, I expect he will go off odds on.
June 2, 2021 at 19:23 #1543101Kirby jocked off John Leeper for Dettori. I’m not Kirbys biggest fan, but its a cruel old game at times.
Lough Derg hasn’t done much for Bolshoi Ballets form tonight at the Curragh.

June 2, 2021 at 19:53 #1543109The most bizarre run up to the derby I can ever remember. Not sure the ante post market is very big but I’m sure a lot of confused punters right now. John Leeper looks to me to have zero chance but it shows how few quality three year olds Dettori has available. If it wasntt for gosdens older horses he’d be relying on coolmore for big wins.
I can’t fathom the lads decision. What happens if bb has a wee setback. Surely they should have had at least say Van Gogh as back up. Plus they have no idea what the pace of the race will be. If he handles Epsom I think bb will win due to his acceleration but given the lads desire to win the derby seems crazy they have done this. Lockdown fever strikes again. They must drive aiden nuts. I wonder how many more top races he could have won if they would just let him place the horses or leave it to say Kevin Blake.
Coolmore are a well run operation but they baffle most people with their strategy.June 2, 2021 at 20:08 #1543114Myself and many others have felt for a long time that HD would not be suited by Epsom. I’m not surprised he is missing the race, but the timing is strange. The RP Online headline yesterday was a Listen quote about how much he fancied HD on Saturday!
I’m really hoping BB is drawn low, as I’m always desperate to oppose a short one.
