Good afternoon
is there anywhere online where one can see the early entries eg, for the 4th and 5th of February?
thanks.
January 25, 2009 at 01:56 #206343Good evening
For the past 20 or so years we have been operating a 5 day entry system in this country. This means, that owners or their representatives (the trainers) for a race on Saturday have to make an entry by the preceding Monday, for example.
Big races operate differently, and you have to enter either a few weeks, or even a few months (Derby) in advance.
I believe that final declarations for Flat racing and Grade 1 over the Jumps are made 2 days beforehand, and everything else one day. This might be slightly wrong as I am old, amnesiac and decrepit and I either find it too difficult to keep up with changes, or can’t be bothered.
Gerald
PS sorry for not saying welcome to the Forum, I’ve never been into social niceties. There are a lot of nice people here.
January 25, 2009 at 04:38 #206375On the racing post website, I tend to go via the entries of a particular horse that I know is in the field, but there is usually a link if there is an associated story.
This should be the page for what was formerly the Tote Gold Trophy (Schweppes before that)

First Saturday in Feb.Can’t see you’d be interested in any other race such as the Aon or Game Spirit.

Five day entries are available via a number of places.
I tried accessing entries for big races via the BHA website a couple of weeks ago, but I think for some peculiar reason you have to be an owner, trainer, jockey’s agent or member of the press to access that bit.
January 25, 2009 at 13:31 #206394thanks Gerald…I was interested in the Novice Hurdle on the 5th at Huntingdon…
January 25, 2009 at 14:17 #206399I suppose a few of us will have a look on the 1st to try to figure out why.
January 25, 2009 at 15:13 #206412sorry, didn’t mean to be secretive or anything…we’ve entered Der Spieler
January 25, 2009 at 17:21 #206434The Gambler.
Read Dostoevsky’s novella when I was 18 or 19.
January 25, 2009 at 18:07 #206445or should I say, we are entering him…
January 25, 2009 at 18:32 #206450Maybe you HAVE entered him? There is no need to wait until the last moment, but I suppose it is prudent to wait until the morning of the deadline, just in case of those frequent injuries and illnesses.

January 30, 2009 at 23:59 #207239don’t think there will be a big field…what do you think?
January 31, 2009 at 00:30 #207246Hi Dallimann
I’m not into hurdlers. Surely you are more interested in WHO turns up, rather than how many?
Der Spieler was briefly famous earlier this week, as he was tagged onto the bottom of the story about Fiepes Shuffle, on the front page of the Racing Post website.
Because of that, he was added to the betfair market for the Triumph Hurdle.
Any plans for that? There is also the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Gerald
January 31, 2009 at 02:12 #207266depending on how he runs on Thursday…Fred Winter isn’t an option (need 3 runs), and that doesn’t come into question for Der Spieler..
January 31, 2009 at 02:20 #207268hope you’re wrong with the…."briefly famous"….
January 31, 2009 at 15:43 #207318Hopefully someone more knowlegable than me will read this and correct or affirm it, but I believe you can run in a h’cap after 2 runs, so long as you win one of them.
But I suppose if you win at Huntingdon, then the Triumph will definitely be the target anyway.
I hope you don’t mind me asking a couple of questions.
A few years ago the Triumph Hurdle had a reputation as a tough, hard race, that ruined the careers of racehorses. (But maybe the horses weren’t as good as people thought?) Are you worried about the mark that the race might leave on the horse?
On a similar theme, Kempton and Huntingdon are different kinds of track from Cheltenham. Will you really know what to expect from the horse at Cheltenham?
Also, unless Dresden is left-handed, Der Spieler has never run on a left-handed track.
Does Der Spieler have any quirks?
That all reads as being rather negative, but all I’m trying to do is ask some questions out of curiosity, as I’ve never been involved in horseracing.

January 31, 2009 at 16:42 #207324Gerald,
The rules were altered this year so that any horse that has run twice over hurdles can be entered for a handicap and will be given a mark if the handicapper feels he has enough evidence. This change was made because trainers were finding it difficult to get the necessary third run in a novice hurdle due to multiple eliminations.
However, for top class handicaps, such as the ones at Cheltenham, the three run rule still applies, regardless of whether a horse has won or not. So to run in the Fred Winter, a horse must have run three times before Feb 22nd.
January 31, 2009 at 16:57 #207328Der Spieler doesn’t have any quirks at all…he is in actual fact very laid back. He got left flatfooted at Kempton, and seeing as Huntingdon is a similar track, he’s more likely to be ridden closer up. Now, Cheltenham would be a track he’d like in my opinion. But, that all depends on Huntingdon. Dresden is a right handed track, he’s so laidback though, lefthanded wouldn’t bother him at all. He did disappoint on the flat in Germany as a 3 year old, but since we’ve had him he’s done nothing wrong.
