Hi People!
Duke of Milan ran in the second at Kempton today.
This was a bit of a shock to me as he was one of my "Horses to follow" for the 84/85 National Hunt Season.
As I recall, he was a respectable sort, yellow, black hoops, yellow sleeves and a black and white quarted cap. I can recall drawing in the colors as an 8 year old.
So why is a horse with the same name running at Kempton today?
I thought there was a 50 year rule for names?

January 4, 2009 at 02:24 #201392Duke of Milan (GB) foaled 1977
and
Duke of Milan (IRE) foaled 2003Different countries of birth – that’s why the name was allowed …
I was recently surprised to see Princeful – again different countries – this latest Princeful is FR 2003 and the one I remember IRE 1991.
January 4, 2009 at 02:32 #201395When I was at the Tingle Creek meeting at Sandown with Flipper last month, there were two horses running called Free World, but, off memory, I think one was Irish bred, and one was French bred.

Craig, the old boy would be 29, i was just a teenager when Steve smith-eccles broke the course records at Sandown and Wincanton on the "Duke", he loved fast ground and 21/2-3m i think it was either N,Gaselee or D, Gandolfo who trained him, i remember him beating one of my favourites and giving him weight "Charter Party"!

That’s correct there were two Free World’s running in consecutive races.
There’s also two Nicanor’s – one being the slayer of Denman and the other is Barbaro’s little brother.
There’s a list of internationally protected names but other than that you can name them whatever you want within reason.
Averti (the top sprinter) ran against another Averti in one race and there were two Enrique’s (the Guineas placer of 1999) and a German-bred hurdler.
January 4, 2009 at 17:05 #201476This seems to be happening more and more recently. Apart from Duke Of Milan yesterday there was also Blue Charm running at Lingfield and Olympian entered at Sandown.
January 4, 2009 at 17:19 #201481I’m sure someone with a better memory than me will remember the details but there was at least one race in the mid to late 90’s where there were two horses with the same name in the same race. I think one was British bred and the other French.
If I get time I will try and find more info.
January 4, 2009 at 17:25 #201483Averti (IRE) and Averti (USA) both ran in the same Yarmouth race once.
I think Crystal Heights (FR) and Crystal Heights did too but I can’t be sure!
January 4, 2009 at 17:29 #201484I’m sure someone will clarify but I think the protected names are only for certain horses plus the winners of certain races.
Trying to think of the two highest profile horses with teh same names. Weren’t there two Caerleons?
January 4, 2009 at 17:36 #201488Same with Binocular if I remember correctly.
January 4, 2009 at 17:40 #201492…There’s a list of internationally protected names but other than that…
that’s my understanding too. the list to 1 Jan 2008 had 4449 names: additions for calendar 2008 likely around April:

Thanks Smthy it was the Averti’s on 30th June 1994 at Yarmouth – Averti (IRE) finished 5th and Averti (USA) 6th.
I don’t think Crystal Heights did meet – one stayed on the flat and the other moved to NH. I don’t think their flat careers actually overlapped.

The winners of the following domestic races have their names protected:-
The Classics, Ascot Gold Cup, Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle and the King George.
Not sure of the International list.
For unprotected names the rules are:
Brood Mares: 10 years after death or 10 years after last years of giving birth, or at 30 years of age whichever is sooner.
Stallions: 15 years after death or 15 years after last covering, or at 35 years of age whichever is sooner.
Other Horses:- 5 years after death or at 20 years of age – whichever is sooner.

Yes, the "old" Caerleon was also a top class horse, who won the Eclipse Stakes, and was probably not much inferior to his more modern namesake. His full brother, Colorado, also won the Eclipse as well as the 2000 Guineas, and would have been significantly better than either of them.

Strange ~ I have a memory of Red and White (or poss Silver) Stripes and a Black cap; Nick Gaselee trained him. One of my favourites as a novice but he struggled a bit with the handicapper subsequently.

You are right, Rory! I realized this last night, I am pretty sure it as red and white stripes, white sleeves and a black cap.
I think a horse called A Kinsman had those colors.Craig

You’re correct with A Kinsman who won the Sun Alliance Chase (in which John Francome was alleged to have stopped Forgive N Forget) for owner trainer John Brockbank. John was still training under permit a few years ago and perhaps his colours haven’t disappeared altogether from the track.
