You’re correct with A Kinsman who won the Sun Alliance Chase (in which John Francome was alleged to have stopped Forgive N Forget) for owner trainer John Brockbank. John was still training under permit a few years ago and perhaps his colours haven’t disappeared altogether from the track.
His last known runner under Rules was a winner – Trivial won the long-established Horace D Pain Memorial Hunters’ Chase Trophy at Cartmel on May 26th, 2004. Royal Reference (PU in a Wetherby novices’ chase, January 2004) was his last Rules runner outside of the hunters’ chase sphere.
I suppose the last halfway decent Rules horse he trained himself would have been Pampering, five times a winner of 3m-3m4f chases in the North, and on one occasion good enough to beat the still upwardly-mobile The Langholm Dyer and Birling Jack in a Kelso handicap.
I can’t find evidence of them having had Rules horses in ownership with anyone else more recently than May 2004.

January 4, 2009 at 22:06 #201571Weren’t there two Ginistrellis’ (one with (USA)) running in the same maiden at Newmarket about 15 years ago?
January 4, 2009 at 22:13 #201573Rory is right. Red and whilte stripes white black and white striped cap and trained by Nick Gaselee. In his later years he had grey flecks in his tail. Lived to a good old age and was in the yard well after his retirement, used to go and see him at the Lambourn OPen Day.
The colours are still in use though not under the same owners name and a horse ran in them at Cheltenham on New Years Day.
January 4, 2009 at 23:12 #201587Christian has a couple of 3 year olds in training called Achill Island and Cesare. In addition to this, Lord Sam ran at Dortmund this afternoon, and Elfast is entered for next weeks meeting!

Brockbank update – I have just been writing a preview for the Cumberland Hunt point-to-point meeting at Aspatria this Saturday, and noted there is a Brockbank owned-and-trained mare called Lollipop entered in two races.
Not sure how predisposed you are towards making the long trip up from London on a whim, Rory, but maybe there’s a chance for you to see those colours in action once more?

A little too much of a stretch JG, but nice to know the Brockbank colours are still in action.

Imagine trying to register a horse in the UK and calling it Sea Bird II or someone naming a horse Arkle in France. Surely it couldn’t happen.
I’m pretty sure from memory I was told many years ago some names are banned in the UK and probably Sea Bird II will be among them.
It can surely only be a matter of time before the relevant authourities in racing countries are forced to work together.
I looked up one horse on the SL website and I think there was 4 or maybe even 5 of them

In winning action, at that – Lollipop took the opening Hunt Members race.

If you go on Grace Beresfords website via Jumping For Fun you will find several photos of these famous colours being carried by more than one horse. No doubt you will find the same thing via John Grossick’s site as well and also flip to the Lauderdale meeting to see the famous Flying Ace colours still plying their trade in Northern points.
May 14, 2009 at 17:24 #227568On closer inspection it was a double on the day for Brockbank, as Tomopolly also opened his account later on the same card. That one could try to double up at the Haydon meeting at Hexham PTP (yes, that smaller course you can see on the infield of the Rules course on ATR’s pictures) this weekend.

May 24, 2009 at 13:57 #229807Lollipop entered in the maiden hunter at Cartmel tomorrow, with the "galloping milkman" Tristan Davidson once more in the plate. Haven’t had a proper look at the race yet, but on first glance there may be one or two with livelier chances.
