Since Dubai, we have had
– Spanish Moon, Group 1 winner
– Paco Boy, Group 1 winner
– Youmzain, shd second in a Group 1
– Vodka, dual Group 1 winner
– Presvis, Group 1 winner, and 2nd in another Group 1
– Alexandros, nse second in a Group 1, probably denied due to whip being knocked out of rider’s handIt is noticeable that, Alexandros apart, none of the above actually wintered in Dubai, a pattern that has more than a few corollaries in previous seasons.
Isn’t it time that the Sheikh realised his experiment isn’t working, and maybe that’s the real reason for the Godolphin operation’s fall from grace in the past 5 years or so – and a much more plausible explanation for some of the stuff on this thread than any ‘superdrug’?July 1, 2009 at 10:45 #237235Well – they were just the Group 1 horses that turned up for World Cup day and exactly the sort of horses I wouldn’t bother running in Dubai.
On a related point, if Gladiatorus’s flop over here was down to him not "finding his rhythm" or perhaps not handling the humidity etc etc, do we expect the horse to rediscover his form back in Dubai next winter?
And who will be training? Mohammed bin Shafiya? HIS record speaks for itself…
August 3, 2009 at 22:59 #242434World Cup winner, Well Armed, has finished last of 8 on his reappearance.
Duty Free winner, Gladiatorus, was beaten 20 lengths by Paco Boy into 6th of 9 on his reappearance.
Sheema Classic winner, Eastern Anthem, was beaten 11 lengths by Ask into 6th of 8 on his reappearance.
UAE winner, Regal Ransom, was beaten 15 lengths into 8th in the Kentucky Derby.
Godolphin Mile winner, Two Step Salsa, was beaten 7 lengths and then 8 lengths into 4th in 2 Grade 2s.
I certainly won’t be paying any attention whatsoever to it next year.
August 4, 2009 at 00:32 #242445I think it’s steroids aswell. Well Armed wins the Dubai gold cup then on his re-appearance in America finishes last of eight in a grade 2. Ok it may have been polytrack, but come on these horses are on something.
Perhaps i’m wrong…but it’s hard to work out because steroids weren’t banned in America until the end of 08.
August 7, 2009 at 04:24 #242896Well Armed came out of his race with a bone chip that will require surgery, so that should explain why he ran so poorly.

You need to do a bit better than that to prove your point, Zarkava. Four of those five have legitimate excuses. Gladiatorus was given a ridiculous ride, Eastern Anthem failed to handle the track and then unsurprisingly given the fact he did not stay 14f at York last year, failed to get 20f at Ascot, Regal Ransom, of whom connections were worried about his ability to stay a mile, let alone further, actually ran with credit in the race you mention and Well Armed has been answered in the post above by Tam Lin.
You can blame poor placement of their horses by Godolphin more than you can blame travelling to Dubai as the reason for their results earlier in the season.

Mmm – evidence mounting up now that Gladiatorus isn’t very good at all outside of Dubai. (And this was predicted well in advance of Gladiatorus coming over to the UK so isn’t aftertiming)Is there anyone who still believes what they saw in the Duty Free was form that could be taken seriously?
September 7, 2009 at 14:34 #247698You really have a bee in your bonnet about this TDK.

You could be right about Gladitorious, maybe going sharp left at the Breeders will rejuvenate him. But at this stage to put that one horse up as evidence of the demise of the Dubai Carnival is simply not correct imo.
Roll on those balmy spring evenings.

Wish I could have got odds about this thread being resurrected after this weekend!
Fwiw, both horses have run poorly since the carnival, though that’s not at all unusual for Godolphin charges, and I thought both ran their best races since then this weekend, so there’s still chances of TDK dining on his topper before the season’s out.September 8, 2009 at 01:31 #247798I’m beginning to wonder if humidity could be a factor why Dubai horses are flopping over here. Over in Dubai, I’d say that the humidity is quite low compared to the humidity that is rather high here.
Maybe something to do with blood thining out in hot climate?
Balius won the Anatolia Trophy in Istanbul…….just a thought.
