Posted 16/09/08 in reference to the Melbourne Cup
WEEKEND HUSTLER is bred to sprint, and he is very good at it, but he has never raced beyond 1600m and will not run the 3200m. HE IS THE BEST LAY BET OF ALL TIME FOR THE MELBOURNE CUP.
Also posted bet against him in the Caulfield Cup and risk in the Cox Plate. He was under $3 for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate alike and about $14
for the Melbourne Cup antepost at the time.A hot topic dosage, but nevertheless a guide to the distance aptitude of thoroughbreds.
With Weekend Husslers first attempt at 2000 he failed to run on.
Some had said you believe what your eyes tell you, he is a champion. Others stated more needs to be studied of the female family and referered to some distance form that had been proved. Those things are of course very true but only a guide just like DOSAGE.
With the huge speculation that Weekend Hussler was going to make a clean sweep of the classics and the Melbourne cup on his way to proving he is the best horse we have ever seen in Australia it was dosage that exposed his under belly.I will even state that his Caulfield Cup run over 2400 in two weeks will be a disaster and flatten him for the Cox Plate 2040 the week after.
So he is worth layng in all three majors.
Dosage is a valuable tool if used correctly.
Will now put my ear muffs onOctober 7, 2008 at 11:47 #183867MCDONALD CONFIDENT AFTER TEAM MEETING
Trainer Ross McDonald has revealed he met with jockey Brad Rawiller on Monday after the shock defeat of champion galloper Weekend Hussler in last Saturday’s Patinack Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.“We were just beaten by a bad gate and pilot error. We had Brad down on Monday, we played some race tapes. It’s all positive. We know we’ve got the best horse, we just have to get the best ride,” McDonald said.
McDonald confirmed it’s all systems go for the Hussler to tackle the BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Tatts Cox Plate (2040m) despite his Turnbull eighth.
“At the moment nothing’s changed. We’ll run in the Caulfield Cup then go to the Cox Plate, then we’ll look at Flemington,” McDonald said.
“We’ve trained him to run in the Caulfield Cup, his work this morning we couldn’t have been happier with. He pulled up well, his coat is glistening after Saturday and the vets have checked him out.”
McDonald also had a warning for those daring to question whether Australia’s reigning horse of the year was capable of achieving his major spring goals.
“Everyone’s dropped of him, but that’s fine – we might get better odds. You don’t get the chance to win a Cox Plate very often. He’s been favourite all along. I’m confident,” McDonald said.
October 7, 2008 at 13:28 #183876To comment on dosage you must do the research. Dosage is only an indication of distance preference. At graded level, a trainer is not going to enter a horse that does not show real potential at the proposed aimed race distance ( and going ). My advise is to disregard dosage and base your selection on more important factors.
Backing two runners is the relentless pursuit of value. Backing each way is a shortcut to the poor house. Only 7% make a long term profit.
October 18, 2008 at 17:52 #185272Weekend Hussler is now likely to head to the paddock after failing to stay in the Caulfield Cup.
His trainer Ross McDonald said he will be set for races up to a mile in the future where he has proven to be far superior to his rivals.
October 20, 2008 at 17:21 #185575OK , so i’m a lucky bugger this time (and I know it!), but I used to have so much faith in line breeding and dosage.
I have reverted to my own eye’s being the best judge and it has paid massive dividends with All The Good.
Dosage = too dour for Caulfield Cup
Line Breeding = nothing to get excited about!
Eye’s = The Newburgh Win exposed the possibilities. My share in our horse by the name of, you guessed it "Snooperclyde" fits all the ticks with line breeding dosage etc.
The three other horses with very good LB & D have been useless ahhh!!!Just an indication these factors are.
Has anyone got a similar story?
