August 5, 2011 at 18:16 #367278Currently I live in a flat on my own so its not a good environment to have a dog.
If I could have a dog I would have a Springer Spaniel.
Before living here I lived with a woman who had a female Springer Spaniel. Before I met her she used to have dogs stay with her while the RSPCA found them new homes. When they took Rosie away from an owner who didn’t treat her right and gave her to my ex partner they then said instead of us giving you different dogs all the time would you like to keep her. I could never understand why someone would pay £300 for a pedigree dog and then not treat it properly.
She was an amazing friendly dog. i used to take her out into the countryside and walk for miles which she loved. She would stand there with her head up in the air sniffing whatever she could smell, she used to get filthy in muddy water and I would have to hose her down before letting her back into the house.
One time she got into the lobby and chewed up a pair of my ex’s new boots £90 worth! Thats the only time I saw my ex speechless!!
She loved chicken the smell of it cooking drove her mad and she couldn’t wait to get her share. Lamb bones were a great favourite.
Sometimes when the cat Lucky, also a RSPCA rescue animal, would wind her up it was magic. Lucky would sit behind the doorway and when Rosie came through would smack her in the nose with his paw.
Then they would chase each other around the house and the garden. They seemed to have a healthy disrepect for each other.
She was a tart too, in the park she would run up to other dog owners and sit on their feet and expect to be stroked and have a fuss made.
When you came in the house she would go mad charging about tail going nine to the dozen. If someone she knew approached, that tail would beat against the window and she would bark and yell with excitement.
She always seemed to be only a few feet away, lying on the settee head on my lap, near my feet when sitting outside.
She was ten when she got cancer and had to be put down, I found that a very hard experience, worse than the passing of a close human.
When I get a house again then I would love to have another Springer.
August 5, 2011 at 18:54 #367289Before I switched to whippets I used to have spaniels; surely the most lovable kind of dog ever. At one time I thought I’d get either a labrador or a springer
but spoke to someone who bred both who said that, if a labrador needed a lot of exercise, a springer needed twice as much. A spaniel puppy [either cocker or springer] is the most adorable puppy you can get
. My favourite spaniel, Meg, died when she was only six; I had one of her daughters, but it was never the same. I’d had a picture in a book of my ‘dream dog’ and Meg was that dog. We were once staying in Cornwall and I’d stayed in the car whilst the rest of the family took Meg along the beach..they walked a long way, let her off the lead and she ran straight back to me; she was very much my dog.
