Big mistake!!! Big big mistake! Get your hurly gurlys on Hurricane Fly at 11/4. Merry Xmas is an under statement.
Solwhit Before heading for the Fighting Fifth the current favourite beat Muirhead and Hurricane Fly in the D & B at Punchestown. He arrived at Newcastle probably fitter and in better form than most. While the Puchestown race was run at a slightly better pace than Newcastle I think Solwhit was exposed as a decent horse who falls well short of Champion Hurdle class.
Hurricane Flywas so impressive last season he was being hailed as the next Istabraq. I sincerely doubt he was fit at Puchestowns and over and above that his jockey unfortunately got into a fight with him he was never going to win. Like most top trainers Willie Mullins will have left plenty to work on and this will be where his season starts.
The fact Muirhead split the two combined with Solwhit’s subsequent failure leads me to believe the form isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. I not only have little doubt Hurricane Fly will reverse placing with Solwhit I think he’ll do so with ease.
The weird thing is most bookies have Solwhit longer than Hurricane Fly for the Champion Hurdle but the other way round for this
Surely Solwhit would have more chance of beating him on the stiffer Cheltenham track than round Puchestown?Voler La Vedette On a line through Go Native she would win this by a furlong but Go Native would make Harchibald look like a saint on a no go day and spat out the dummy the minute the pressure was applied. She’s a cracking mare but I think she’ll find this opposition much too tough for her and considering she’s 20/1 for the Champion Hurdle and 4/1 for this tells me someone is extracting the urine.
Muirhead I backed him at long odds EW for this years Champion Hurdle and he could still run a big race at Cheltenham but he lacks the toe for a race like this. I think his trainer knows that he’s being trained with one race in mind..enough said!
Nothing else makes any sort of appeal.
Hurricane Fly 11/4 and a partridge in a pear tree
December 18, 2009 at 18:56 #264412Agreed Fist….thats a big price.
Double up that with Joncol at 3/1 and you be buying the whole forum drinks at the festival
December 18, 2009 at 19:34 #264422Murphy said the mare is more likely to run against her own sex than in this. Probably wait till the Irish Champion in January to take on the boys.
Willie’s form would concern me slightly about HF but his bulletin today was far more upbeat. Ruby gave a very positive report as well.

Voler will go close
December 19, 2009 at 12:25 #264502"They may make their Christmas targets, but i certainly wont be bothered if they dont"quote W,Mullins regarding Mikael and Hurricane fly!I sense a lack of confidence there! My powder shall remain dry for a bit longer on this one!Time is running out for Mikaels Cheltenham chances,i would certainly like to see at least 2 runs before the RSA!
December 19, 2009 at 12:40 #264510I don’t think we will see HF’s true potential this season until Willies stable begins to fire. I’m sure there’s plenty to look forward to but I wouldn’t have HF for this. Could be he runs a big race but I’ll oppose him on this occasion.
December 19, 2009 at 16:15 #264546Will wait until runners are confirmed b4 having a bet, but do not rule out donnas palm and muirhead. I think Mead has some of the best 2m hurdlers around.
Donnas palm was overraced last year, but ran HF close in a G1 novice hurdle, It may be that HF was not at his best as it was his first run of the year, but i think this horse is an improver, in much the same way as punjabi improved past katchit, as they got older.
I am on at huge prices for cheltenham, on both muirhead and donnas palm.
December 20, 2009 at 15:10 #264674Hurricane Fly and Voler La Veddette are the two for me…I was interested reviewing VLV’s videos last night that although she is smallish she seemed to get in tight quarters in nearly every race before showing a zinging turn of foot. I have backed her for the CH at small stakes and big odds. Looking forward to the best race over the holidays.
December 20, 2009 at 23:31 #264732Excuse my ignorance, but what is the consenses regarding Hurricane Fly and the going? I have never heard a Willie Mullins comment on the issue. Is soft ok for him? He strikes me as the sort that will take off once he encounters good ground.

It does now…looks like your contacts are still getting up pretty early, Fist. Suspensory ligament…no Festival Hurdle…probably no Festival…and it may be the end for Hurricane Fly. Bad luck for connections, damned bad luck.
In a related point, hopefully Colm will give the mare the go ahead. He sounded pretty reticent today.December 21, 2009 at 20:27 #264834"They may make their Christmas targets, but i certainly wont be bothered if they dont"quote W,Mullins regarding Mikael and Hurricane fly!I sense a lack of confidence there! Connections knew something 2 days ago with complacent quotes like that! 25/1 for the Champion hurdle now!A very close call for TAPK there,i fancied him for the December hurdle big time!

What an absolute shocker. If I hadn’t called to enquire about getting on a few quid for me I would have lost a right few bob. I once commented on Willie Mullins not showing anyone a birds nest and got slagged for it. Wonder if the same people still think the same.
Funny thing is when I called back to thank my friend I asked about the Champion Hurdle and he made a very valid point "Who knows for sure but I was told it wasn’t that serious and if it was why on earth waste money leaving him in?"
He was talking about the Irish race and I suppose one way of looking at it is if the horse is so bad he’s going to miss the Champion Hurdle he couldn’t possible have had a chance of running. 11/4???? What is it they say? "If it looks to good to be true it isn’t"
Of course these thing may not look as bad as they are and can quickly flare up but the can also look bad and clear up quicker than you think.
The major bookies don’t seem to be taking it as serious as Betfair punters and are adopting a wait and see policy. All we can do is do the same but I wouldn’t be giving up on his just yet…..in 4 to 7 days time I think we’ll know one way or the other if he has any chance of making it.

He can go on any ground it he did make it to Cheltenham and it came up soft/heavy he’d be backed off the boards….he goes through it like a knife through butter

Should still be a good race and it could answer the question is Solwhit….cracking mare this Voler La Veddette but she hasn’t encountered anything of his class. Can’t count Harchibald Junior as he spat the dummy out when they met.
I read somewhere that Starluck will take on Binocular in the other Xmas Hurdle….As big a fan as I am he’s the last horse in training you would want to be taking on round Kempton..It’s not Binoculars fav course, Nicky just likes running his Cheltenham prospects there to sharpen them up but Strarluck will absolutely love it and must be a huge danger even if Binocular is at his very best.
Not that I think Starluck has any chance of winning the CH as he appears not to stay round there in a fast run race but I could these two races could turn the CH betting on it’s head. If Solwhit is beaten he’ll be any price for the Champion Hurdle and if Binocular is beaten he’ll be 10/1 in a flash.
December 22, 2009 at 22:42 #265013What chance would you give Sublimity in this race he was 3L in front of Solwhit last time out. that horse had already had a run.And he won this race last year as well.
