Sad news that prolific owner David Johnson has passed away. He was a great supporter of jump racing and owned many great horses. It will seem strange not to see him around at the races.
July 6, 2013 at 18:24 #444974As you say kenh, he was a stalwart of the winter game.
He will be sadly missed.
R.I.P., and my thoughts are with his loved ones.July 6, 2013 at 19:10 #444979Very sorry to hear this. Saw him so often at Cheltenham and Uttoxeter; difficult to believe he won’t be there again.
July 6, 2013 at 19:45 #444983One of NH’s great owners.Only 67 as well, sad news.

July 6, 2013 at 21:32 #444988How awful heard he was ill recently but thought he was over the worst. Has been a great supporter of the jumps scene and we would have been poorer without his horses RIP

just watched this race mike i remember backing him in this at 16/1 he was an old favourite of mine happy memories thanks for sharing David Johnson put a lot into racing and will be missed rip
July 7, 2013 at 00:37 #444999Very sad news. I have fond memories of many David Johnson horses from the era when I first started following the sport. Thanks for Take Control, Stormez and Well Chief in particular.
This comes as a surprise too. At either Cheltenham or Aintree this year, I remember the C4 pre-race coverage showing David Johnson -albeit looking rather gaunt – joking with the Pipes. Clare Balding made some reference to him being ‘on the mend’ at the time.
July 7, 2013 at 07:41 #445011Really sad news. Didn’t know he was ill, although I don’t recall seeing his colours around as much recently. Condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Johnson and his colours will be sadly missed. A big loss to NH Racing.
With regard to Mike’s link – I remember AP being somewhat ‘underwhelmed’ by this result after boiling down to his bones for the flopping Chicuelo. Time flies!
July 7, 2013 at 10:25 #445024Very sad news. Great memories of a lot of his horses especially his best one Well Chief.
July 7, 2013 at 10:57 #445030The Pipes were seriously good with fragile horses, and bringing horses back after long lay off’s. Is Well Chief still the highest rated two miler not to have won the Champion Chase? Cyfor Malta was such a favourite of mine, and what a beauty.
July 7, 2013 at 14:40 #445041Very touching tribute from Timmy Murphy related to At the Races, which is also mentioned on the Sportinglife website.
Really sad loss to racing.July 7, 2013 at 17:49 #445061Very Sad News.David was one of those
Old Fashioned
Gamblers who was never afraid to put his money where his mouth is and pulled some incredible touches off thanks to the brilliance of the Pipes.
Comply or Die
was one of those horses who used his RSA form to suggest he was a serious player and winning the Grand National certainly influenced me………My daughter was born 9 months later!
July 7, 2013 at 19:46 #445068Sad news indeed.
A great supporter of NH racing and the times I saw him at the races with Martin Pipe he always seemed happy and jovial.
A sad loss to racing.July 7, 2013 at 20:30 #445072Indeed a sad loss to racing. He always came across as approachable and someone who really enjoyed his racing when interviewed on TV. He certainly put plenty of money into the sport and deserved every bit of success he got.
He must have had great fun having a bet knowing the Pipe’s had a particular horse in peak condition. Plenty of class horses he had too.
My daughter was born 3 days before Cyfor Malta won the Mackeson for a second time. A sneaky bet at 20/1 and we got to watch the race on CH4 in the Maternity Hospital. Great memories.
Another horse I remember of Mr Johnson’s was Challenger Du Luc – now what a character he was.
Condolences to Mr Johnson’s family and friends.
July 7, 2013 at 20:43 #445075He was on c4 back along and looked very poorly but seemed in good spirits.
