ITV just interviewed Stoute and despite the drift from 3/1 to 7/1 the presenter stated that Crystal Ocean was well backed for the Dante. When asking Stoute if he had seen anything at home that warranted a gamble for the Derby on Crystal Ocean, he simply said “No”
Stoute added that he had never seen Crystal Ocean as a Derby horse, because he has just been bringing him along slowly and that the Derby comes too soon. The trainer added that the colt has a long way to go.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 18, 2017 at 15:04 #1301243Yeah but maybe he’s hiding the light under a bushel
Either way the drift is ominous- horse almost out to double figures.
May 18, 2017 at 15:35 #1301248Great call Steve

thought crystal ocean ran well and will improve for the extra two furlongs
doesn’t look like a derby winner though.
May 18, 2017 at 15:40 #1301249Crystal Ocean is a “Man the lifeboats” job this morning. From 3/1 and with favourite Cracksman a non-runner, Stoute’s horse is out to 7/1.
Benbatl is fav now but too short to my eyes at 7/2, Rekindling is 4/1 next best.
I thought Permian looked a strong stayer last time and I had a bit on him at 14/1, in the hope he can run the guts out of the rest of them.
Permian 14/1
Well played
Am gutted to be beaten after the race went so well for Benbatl
May 18, 2017 at 15:41 #1301250Well done Steve mate, a very game colt isn’t he?
You’d have to say that Crystal Ocean is the horse to take out of the race though and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t prove to be the best horse in due course. My horse Rekindling wasn’t the most willing partner and still ran a good enough race to warrant running at Epsom in my humble opinion.
May 18, 2017 at 15:51 #1301255I don’t see Crystal Ocean being ready for a race like the Derby as the family (Crystal Capella & Hillstar) are well know to improve with age. You would also have to wonder how today’s exertions will affect them with only a 16 day turnaround to the Derby.
May 18, 2017 at 15:57 #1301256Cheers everyone.
Crystal Ocean stayed on well. I thought he simply lacked the pace. Not sure Epsom would suit.
To be honest, I think this was a group 3 Dante at best. Mark Johnston is talking about supplementing Permian for the Derby but I am not sure about that myself. I think that this Dante winner’s rating may be quite low in reality.
It’s Crazy to see Cracksman as low as 4/1 Fav for the Derby, given that he has missed the trial and been the subject of negative reports all week.
Cliffs Of Moher looks ridiculously skinny as well.
Mind you what a crap Derby book it looks overall, with every horse seemingly quoted, no matter what their level.
Crystal Ocean’s “Franking” horse Okool is even in the betting for the Derby. The four time race 3 grand maiden winner rated 81 is 50/1 if anyone believes in fairies.
Just a thought, if Okool “Franked” Crystal Ocean’s form, did Crystal Ocean “unfrank” Okool’s form today?
“You know, I was thinking of backing Okool for the Derby, but that cuddy Crystal Ocean was only third in the Dante, and you need that form “Franked” really”

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 18, 2017 at 16:03 #1301257Crystal Ocean will NOT run in the Derby according to Stoute
May 18, 2017 at 16:06 #1301259John Ferguson confirmed Permian will be supplemented for the Derby and it looks likely that Benbatl and the Lingfield Derby Trial winner is also like to run.
Martin Meade was just interviewed and he was very bullish about Eminent (after writing off his run in the guineas due to lack of pace) and he said he will also be appearing at Breakfast with the Stars.
May 18, 2017 at 16:41 #1301268So it’s looking like all the trial winners bar Monarch’s Glen (Sandown Trial) is going to turn up which is something to be thankful for (Epsom Derby Trial, Chester Vase, Dee Stakes, Lingfield Derby Trial, Dante and Derrinstown).
I’d imagine Crystal Ocean will head towards the Edward VII and he does look like a nice horse to keep on side.
May 18, 2017 at 18:03 #1301281Crystal Ocean will NOT run in the Derby according to Stoute
The interview I read had Stoute saying that HE would not run Crystal Ocean in the Derby, but adding that the horse has an owner who MIGHT want to run him.
The trainer should know the horse best and if he’s not for going, I would think the owner would take the advice. The owner is said to have a net worth of roughly $20 Billion, so he can drown any sorrows with a swim in an Olympic sized pool of champagne.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 18, 2017 at 18:09 #1301282Crystal Ocean being ruled out of the Derby can hardly increase the confidence of the two horses who finished ahead of him, given that he was closing on them at the line

Cracksman I don’t think is a bad price now, just the value has all gone, can see him going off even shorter though on the day itself if frankel fever kicks in
May 18, 2017 at 18:09 #1301283I think Exemplar is the bet at 15/2. Will relish the trip and the mud.
Aidan O’Brien said just before the race that Exemplar had had a setback that meant he was about 10 days behind schedule. Originally intended to run in the Gallinule, they decided to take a chance and bring him to the Dante, even though they ideally wanted to leave him a while yet.
I just feel that the whole line from Capri and horses who have locked horns with him, is a tad over rated and very tightly knit. You can sort of see why Aidan would see Cliffs Of Moher as his best and most realistic chance this year in the Derby.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 18, 2017 at 18:28 #1301285Thought it was quite telling the fact that John Ferguson comes on the tv and says yes Sheikh Mo wants permian to run so we’ll supplement him, and Benbatl should run as well.
While on the other hand Sir Michael rules out Crystal Ocean almost immediately
Not difficult to see who wears the trousers in those particular organisations. I get the impression Godolphin are desperate to win the derby this year and are throwing as many darts as they can at it- however that also makes me think they don’t have one outstanding colt they can aim at the race

I would not say he will not run just yet. I wont lose a penny if he does, but after watching the race today i don’t think he had that hard a race to be fair. So probable, but not certain, if it was anyone else but this trainer then for sure he would be out of the betting by now.
If by some miracle it was decided he was going to run i would certainly back him again.
