They do take a fee from the final selling price but if you were to take them to an auction it would likely be the same story anyway.
If you are not au fait with Ebay and don’t have an account I would be willing to auction them on your behalf on the site. I have an Ebay account with 100% feedback from more than 600+ transactions.
Good photos of your items are very helpful on Ebay, as is a good description and any provenance you can add to enhance authenticity, and whether the silks were worn in a particular race would enhance the value.
Sadly, Paypal take their fees from the sellers but I think you may get relief from Ebay if the item is for Charity, although I would need to look into that to find more details of the process involved.
You would have my word as a gentleman that I would strive to maximise the amount the charity would receive. I work for free.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

July 12, 2016 at 16:10 #1255555There are often charity auctions at big race meetings. Sometimes it’s just one item (Doncaster did AP’s saddle at the St Leger meeting last year). Worth considering if you don’t want the bother of selling yourself. Failing that, I’m sure Racing Welfare would be interested. They are involved plenty of high-profile fundraising events and also support racing people with addiction problems
July 12, 2016 at 16:39 #1255558What a lovely item to own, and I’m sure they’ll be well fought for in any auction.
July 12, 2016 at 17:21 #1255560Best of luck nwalton
I’d like to hear the story of how you managed to get your hands on them from Pat.

July 12, 2016 at 18:08 #1255563i got to know pat from my early gambling days(not that he gave out much info) and daily visits to HQ gallops late 70s early 80s.Then got chatting to him in Bedford House hotel, really was a likeable man.
Cant say we were bossom buddies or anyway really close, but he would always stop and chat and make himself available. He knew my son although only about four at the time, was a big Dancing Brave fan and he promised to get the silks and he never let him down.July 12, 2016 at 19:51 #1255578If that’s the Bedford Lodge, they also had a nice collection of silks around the place. The Maitre d’ was an old Polish chap who had seen several changes of ownwership, always had a great racing story.
July 12, 2016 at 21:07 #1255597Thanks for sharing that story N.
What a lovely gift.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
July 12, 2016 at 22:26 #1255604I found an on-going auction on Ebay for a set of silks involved with Frankel but not worn by the jockey on the the horse himself. They are signed by Sir Henry and Tom Queally.
The link is here:-
I think they are being unrealistic myself with the starting price for bids of £1750.
I also looked at the completed auctions and saw one for the silks of Soviet Song, signed by Johnny Murtagh. The seller started the bidding at £525 and didn’t get a single bid. The auction only got 8 views, probably because of the high starting price.
Some people seem to think these things are worth a fortune but they can be a hard sell.
I did see a set of Hamdan Al Maktoum silks supposedly selling for £199 on a maiden bid but it must have fallen through, because the seller had them up for sale again later for the same price and this time got zero bids.
The best one I saw recently was a set of worn Trevor Hemmings silks signed by Ruby Walsh, Leighton Aspell and Jason McGuire. They attracted 15 bids and sold for £104
Auction is/was here:-

Hope the information helps regarding expectations and realistic outcomes. Without provenance buyers are usually reluctant to pay top whack.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

July 13, 2016 at 11:07 #1255650Hi Nwalton,
I`ve just looked at the old sales catalogues on Graham Budd,
and this may give you a sort of guide:-A set of royal Blue Godolphin racing silks with the jacket and cap signed by Frankie Dettori,
by Gibson Saddlers of Newmarket, both signatures in black marker pen; sold together with a mounted colour photograph of Frankie performing a flying dismount in Godolphin colours, also signed in black marker pen by the jockey (3)Provenance:
Personally donated by Frankie Detorri to the Irish Horse Welfare Trust charity auction in 2005 and purchased by the current vendor.Sold for £100
That was in 2014, and it had a sound provenance.
Regards,
Dave
July 13, 2016 at 11:54 #1255651Not so sure I’d want a beautiful set of historic silks with black permanent marker on them, even if it was an autograph.
If the silks in question here were worn for specific races on DB, that would surely help the sale price.
Also, perhaps they’d raise more at one of these big Dinner Night auctions attended by the likes of JP, where drink will be taken
July 13, 2016 at 17:19 #1255841Even though these charity big dinners might raise more money for the Charity, there is something unsatisfactory for me about rich people picking up the items and urinating on the little guy.
I think it was Michael Smurfit who donated one of his own valuable paintings for auction and then bought it back himself for over a million quid.
Fair do’s the charity benefits but it strikes me as showboating and generally “gives you the dry boak so it does”
Something about Pat’s plight and selling the silks to “trollied” bidders doesn’t sit easy with me either but that’s just my tuppenceworth, if it’s worth that much

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
