Come racing !!!
August 19, 2009 at 23:54 #244839Gus – Suggest you write to York, copy the letter on here and then we’ll publish their reply when you recieve it.
August 21, 2009 at 02:38 #245058Yorks a bloody rip off. Fifty quid and only six races, its allot more exspensive than Newmarket, I cannot see the price difference given that I saw the 2000 Guienas this year and paid about twelve quid less too get in.
Its time cut this four day crap and cut their prices. When is mens and LBGT day, we have ladies so when are Hertro men and LGBT going take place?
August 21, 2009 at 12:06 #245100They do offer reduced admission in the form of a 3 day or 4 day ticket if you are going to the bulk or all of the meet.
There’s no need to spend the extra on the County Stand to be honest with Tatts giving you pretty much what you want.
I was a little surprised though that the concession prices for OAP’s were so minimal (I think it was £2 less for Tatts and £3 for the County Stand)
Four days is too much though and in the end I’ve just done day one this year.

You will find it is called market forces – York racecourse, like others, is a business and needs to make a profit. There are those who say racecourses should not operate as businesses but that is another debate – as things stand they are businesses and they need to maintain profitability.
Yes the prices are comparatively high, however there are packed stands and enclosures each of the four days, so from a business perspective they are charging at the correct level.
The only way York will reduce their admission costs is if people vote with their feet and stay away and clearly that is not happening.
Chester, where I am off to this afternoon, is exactly the same. In my view a grossly overpriced course for what is on offer, yet they managed to pack the stands at most meetings.
I have to confess if I were a course manager I would charge the maximum admission cost that would sustain the size crowd I was looking for.
Different courses work to different operating models and Towcester, with their free admission most meetings is oft quoted. However it is interesting to note that no other course has opted to follow their particular business model.

One mans profit is another mans greed Colin!!!
Being a fully paid up capitalist I am fully in the profit camp.

I wish I had said that but I was beaten to it by ‘E. B. White’.

(Esther Ranzen)July 4, 2011 at 11:56 #19097What are management thinking, £37 entry for the Gordon enclousre.
I use to go every year but prices have risen so much in recent years, this has to be the worst value meeting going
I went to Sandown last Friday and Saturday and total cost was £27.50 and there is no way that the Goodwood card is any better then those two days.
Annoyingly enough Goodwood is my local course but it looks like I won’t be attending any meeting in the near future due to costs.
July 4, 2011 at 14:11 #363554God that’s steep! I was hoping to go to for the 2nd day to see Frankel again, but I can’t justify that sort of money, the Lennox enclosure isn’t great. It’s a lovely track in a gorgeous setting, but Hickstead’s RIHS is on in the same week that if you’re being clever can get into very, very cheaply. No contest!

I am going to see Frankel and would pay £100 to see him if I had too.
Here’s a video I put together;
July 4, 2011 at 15:44 #363566Mr Wilson , no offence sir , but its because of people like you , British racecourses take the urine on a permanent basis
Its a disgrace 37 quid , and those who pay it are morons or heading in that direction

July 4, 2011 at 18:05 #363578I went last year for the first time and attended from Tuesday to Friday inclusive. There was definitely a concession in the early part of the week in that it was something like £33 the first two days and £36 the rest. This year it looks like it’s £37 per day all week.
I enjoyed myself but these prices are definitely over the top. £185 for the five days compares very unfavourably with a three-day Grandstand ticket for this week’s July Meeting at Newmarket for £54 and a four-day Grandstand ticket for York’s Ebor Meeting for £78. Goodwood’s a special racecourse but not that special.

too true Ricky, especially your first sentenceJuly 4, 2011 at 22:37 #363599It’s all well and good if you’re willing to pay a small fortune, but some of us don’t have that sort of money! It’s not nice feeling like you’ve been priced out of a day you know you’d enjoy!
July 5, 2011 at 05:21 #363609Unfortunately, this is the lay of the land these days.
Not just racing, but events (sporting, music festivals etc) will charge as much as they can get away with – tis business I spose. Goodwood can play on the "Summer Social Circuit (i.e. toffs & nouveau riche playground).
I notice the example of York has been given in regards offering (relative) reasonable value. Don’t know if it’s more of a Southern thing as event organisers know that there is a small moneyed percentage (City bankers perhaps) for whom £37 is a mere drop in the ocean, leaving us mere mortals priced out of the market.
Recession, what recession?
