You miss the point Ginger; Flyingbolt is a legend, yet didn’t contest a Gold Cup; Dessie another legend, tho admittedly the Gold Cup was the icing on the cake. It should be the great horses that make the races, not the other way around.
January 17, 2024 at 16:43 #1677657Of that we can agree.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 17, 2024 at 20:37 #1677683If c hill misses Cheltenham with an injury what then. Yes he does what he thinks is best but is he really. Pity we cant ask the horse what is best.
January 18, 2024 at 12:35 #1677713The 4yo Burdett Road might now run in the race.
I think Wing And A Prayer ran in the Tolworth as a juvenile hurdler, but can’t remember one running in a race of this nature – Alan?
Not everyone has Nicky Henderson’s modus operandi it would seem.

As far as a juvenile running in the race I’m sure we both still call the Bula, it’s moot because of the race being moved from December to January.
In December, 3yos were not allowed to enter – in January 4yos are allowed to enter. It’s inconsistent and makes no sense. but we are talking about racing.
The Tolworth has always allowed 4yos – Heighlin ran in it before winning the Triumph. And Broadsword won it before not winning the Triumph!
January 18, 2024 at 15:30 #1677743I remember Crystal Spirit winning the Cleeve Hurdle against older horses when he had just turned 4 in 1991. Back then it was a Grade 1.

But now the Tolworth is the Formby Hurdle and run at Aintree on Boxing Day. I assume 3yos are not allowed to run.
January 18, 2024 at 15:54 #16777453yos were allowed run in the new Formby this season, see page 48 on the calendar advertisement from back in December.
January 18, 2024 at 15:56 #1677746Cas,
In fact 3yos were allowed in the Formby, getting a 15lb weight for age allowance. Despite the Finale Hurdle being run the following day.
January 18, 2024 at 16:02 #1677747Thanks both.
January 18, 2024 at 18:00 #1677757You can save Constitution Hill for the Festival and he steps at the 1st hurdle and that’s that.
I was one of those who wanted to see him over fences this season. If he’s a superstar then let him attempt the NH triple crown of Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase & Gold Cup. No horse would ever emulate that.
Doesn’t look as though that will happen and most ex 4 year old pointers only have a limited shelf life so his time is already running out.
January 18, 2024 at 21:13 #1677780Thanks for that, Alan (and Michael).
And yes, it’s still the Bula Hurdle to me.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 18, 2024 at 22:03 #1677783Cue Card ran in the Bula (when it was run in November) as a novice, only his third race over hurdles. Finished 2nd to Menorah.
Another reason he was so adored, connections weren’t afraid of being beaten.January 19, 2024 at 17:24 #1677846Nicky said he wouldn’t want to run in Ireland as that would be an away match. A bit of lame excuse if you ask me, as CH would be long odds on against State Man in Ireland if he’d been fit and Irish don’t seem to have much of a problem away from home at Cheltenham.
January 19, 2024 at 17:57 #1677852I think the reason Nicky doesn’t like running them in Ireland is Sprinter Sacre.
Have not checked this, but if I remember rightly Sprinter’ won at both Cheltenham and Aintree and then went for the treble at Punchestown… And although he won, was nowhere near his best and was never again capable of the kind of rating he was before Punchestown.Value Is Everything - AuthorPosts
