I can’t see a scenario where he beats CH to be honest and I do think State Man’s a very good horse who has come along at the wrong time as he’d have won most of the Champion Hurdle’s in recent years.
CH has shown versatility this year making all at Newcastle and then at Kempton he’s taken or joined the lead from Highway One O Two. I know that one is only a handicapper but he’s a tearaway on the front end and he couldn’t get away from CH and the rest of them finished slowly at Kempton for that pace, CH cantered home. If they try and make it a sprint he’ll probably just make the running himself and if they go quick he’s got such a high cruising speed and finishes really strongly. I just can’t see what State Man can do and he’s probably best just running his own race and settling for 2nd if CH doesn’t have any issues.
Hopefully the pair of them pull miles clear and we get some sort of perspective as to how good they probably both are.

Agree. He is clearly very good. But we ought to already know how he and Constitution Hill compare.
Since last year’s Cheltenham Festival, State Man has run four times. All Grade 1s and he has won the lot.
This makes it even more farcical that he was allowed to run in last year’s County Hurdle off 141 on the back of in effect just one meaningful completed start, at long odds on in a maiden hurdle at Limerick. I do not blame Mullins for gaming the system but it was ridiculous he was allowed to run.
I appreciate the authorities have increased the number of qualifying runs this year but novices should be banned from running in the County altogether. State Man should have been running in the Supreme. Another case of too many options diluting the festival.
February 6, 2023 at 16:42 #1634239It’s quite funny reading/listening to certain racing journalists make it sound as if State Man is going to give Constitution Hill a race next month.
He won’t.
February 6, 2023 at 22:01 #1634282By saying that, Gladiateur, you have ensured the race will end in a dead heat.
February 6, 2023 at 22:08 #1634284I think State Man will get closer to him than Might I, Jetoile, Jonbon or Epatante (twice) managed to, but Constitution Hill can lead if he wants, get a lead if he wants and win when he wants, by as far as he wants.
The Chezza crystal ball is currently showing the plucky State Man leading to two out after which “The Hill” breezes by him and wins by five lengths on the bit, the pair in a different postal district to the rest.

Not because he has a 25% or 20% chance of winning but because the bookies won’t want to pay any each way money or much on the dead cert forecastGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 6, 2023 at 22:49 #1634292Correct – State Man will be a significantly bigger price on the win only market at Betfair Exchange than his SP with the bookies, especially if there’s the “Dead Eight.”
Many will regard him as the each-way thieving bet of the year.

I hope not. I’m planning to bet on the winning distance- looking at eight lengths or more, ideally.
February 7, 2023 at 14:29 #1634369If all goes well it will surely be one of the greatest victories in forum history, there can’t be too many other occasions in which so many members were so confident of a novice 12 months in advance, especially when you consider the regard in which racing journalists held the reigning champion, Honeysuckle, this time last year.
February 7, 2023 at 14:33 #1634371Definitely, Ben, the thread OP deserves particular praise, supernatural clairvoyance and balls of steel to lead the way on this.
Can’t remember offhand who the OP was: Clearly a lion among men – the sort of bloke who could swallow an entire packet of chocolate hob nobs whole….and unwrapped!

February 7, 2023 at 21:19 #1634438Nothing has got nearer to CH than Might I , that’s why I plan to keep him onside …… Ok I’m putting this out there , I don’t think State Man will even finish second …
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
February 7, 2023 at 22:00 #1634458Might I’s chance would be enhanced if he was actually in the race.
14 left in today and three are already earmarked for the Mares’ Hurdle.
I think the only way State Man (an admirable horse who would win some Champion Hurdles – like all of Honeysuckle’s!) won’t be runner up is if:
A) He falls
B) He does a Life Is Good v Flightline and goes far too fast
C) HDLG runs onto the track and gives him a right-hander two out

, if State Man tries to take on CH I reckon he may well fall into a hole so deep Mullins will need to hire a crane to get him out , anyway I don’t punch horses , I pay BigG to do the physical stuff but he,s a horse lover so that won’t happen , I’m still hoping Pied will run into a placePick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
