“That is why we have a season; a series of clashes between the top horses. Not one match up at Cheltenham.”

Even when some run in those races its with the hand brake on as the name of the game is Cheltenham
Wasting money on racing leagues could be used more wisely to induce better grade 1’s throughout the season.

“Nicky Henderson should retire immediately” AFTER brilliantly laying out Constitution Hill to successfully win the 2023 Champion Hurdle, they’ve weighed in and Davies has been paid out on his 3/1 ante-post bet, thus funding delivered takeaways well into next summer.

    There, much better!

“For the first time possibly ever, I’m glad tbh.

I have no doubt he would have beaten Honeysuckle, but the 2023 Champion Hurdle is the priority – my ante-post bet says so!”

    100% agree!

I did not think there was much to be gained by taking on Honeysuckle when it was not necessary. I am also not sure it is a good idea for British horses to take on the Irish in their own backyard.

A classic preparation for next year’s Champion Hurdle is in the horse’s best interests.

I am not an admirer of the way Henderson has dealt with the media and the racing public over the years – but his record at preparing Cheltenham winners is not in doubt.

I think Mr Buckley got a bit carried away with “pub talk” after Cheltenham. It was very clear that Henderson did not share his enthusiasm!

Nicky ‘Balls of Steel’ Henderson strikes again. Terrific stuff for the sport.

Ordinarily I would agree, Lord Tatling, but I’m extraordinarily sentimental about money!

I’m failing to understand why running in a 2m hurdle race would be detrimental for running in another 2m hurdle race in 11 months time.

    So am I.

Reminds me of a story Tommy Cooper told about how he once lost a farthing on a bar counter and started trying to find it. When asked why he replied “It’s not the principle. It’s the money.”

Buckley: ‘I thought he looked like he’d done enough for this year, which Nicky agreed with’

PLease, he ran exactly three times in total (January, December and March) for the whole of the season…..if that is his limit it doesn’t bode well for next year in that we could potentially only see him twice before Cheltenham (Fighting Fifth & Christmas Hurdle me thinks).

No problem if you don’t want to run against Honeysuckle but don’t give me that as a reason because you know damn well that if he went novice chasing you wouldn’t be going into an Arkle of the back of just two runs.

Fingers firmly crossed that they both actually make it to March as we all know how precarious this sport can be with the best laid plans.

That is all Epatante has ever done. Why would Henderson run Constitution Hill more often?

Honeysuckle only had two races before Cheltenham as well.

The days of these horses running five or six times before Cheltenham are gone.

We don’t get the racing media getting overexcited asking Mullins about him taking on one of his novices in open company in Grade 1s do we?! Probably because they know he ain’t stupid. And coz its Henderson being asked and not doing it, this forum goes into meltdown with some saying he don’t know what he’s doing. Crazy.

It’s true – Henderson mentioned the ill omen of Golden Cygnet getting killed at Ayr after the Supreme: it was actually the horse’s second run after Cheltenham.

    Different world, then.

    Those days have gone.

    “Why?”

Because it reduces their chance of winning there

Does it? By what percentage? The name of the game is Racing, not Cheltenham.

    “Does it?”

Potentially it does if the races takes more out of the horse so its harder for a trainer to get them to peak on the day.

    “By what percentage?”

How long is a piece of string

“The name of the game is Racing, not Cheltenham”

Do they not race at Cheltenham.?

They do, but its not the “name of the game”.

“How long is a piece of string”

So you are guessing that is the case based on the recent trend of certain trainers being a set of scared nancy boys?

I used to love Cheltenham, but it has become a bloated monster, and the rest of the season is suffering; the Punchestown Hurdle is a big prize in it’s own right. Not surprised Nick is ducking the contest, as Honeysuckle may be on the downgrade and an easier target next season.
