Does anyone know who did the commentary for RUK last Saturday at Kempton covering the King George etc?
I have just watched the re-run of the whole meeting and this guy takes a bit of getting used to,his first commentary of the day and he only gets excited about A Media Luz just before the fall, then goes OTT in the finish! The filly would have hacked up and he missed several crucial points of her performance prior to that! The second race and anyone who backed Quaser D"Oudairies would be wondering whats happened before he finally mentions its been pulled up,there were only 7 runners and he seemed to lose sight of the above! The 3rd race "and here comes The Reformer bombing through the field" the horse was settled in 5th place and still was when he mentions that pearler! The 4th race "and Aathers making ground into 7th",the bloody horse is settled in 5th place then as he calls out the finish "Ski Sunday is sprinting clear" whoa! Sprinting? Kept on well was the official analysis! this guys colourful to say the least! The 5th race "The Snailhas been left at the start and is doing a good impression of one at the moment" Class! Bible Lord being the 4/1fav should have got a mention when he made a howler at the 4th last and effectively ended any chance he had! The Xmas hurdle went relatively well but his commentary just felt a bit disjointed at times! The King George "A terrific jump from Nacarat" and yet no mention that Kauto stars was even more impressive, then approaching the 2nd last when its blatantly obvious the champs beat he says "here comes Kauto Star after him the hero"s still got 2 lengths to make up"?? Try 4 lengths! Then to celebrate the victory of Long Run he comes out with a "Terrific….(long pause) Stuff" Almost an afterthought to a personal victory for himself!
If this guys a new boy then fair enough,i"ll put it down to inexperience but i think he"ll take a fair bit of getting used to!January 17, 2011 at 23:35 #336486It was Lee Mckenzie. I think it was his biggest "gig" to date, but he’s been around for a while now. I assume he was probably already booked for the normal Lanzarote fixture and ended up with the King George! He’s usually a little more accurate than he was on Saturday, unstandable if he was feeling the nerves. He nearly always does his over the top/shouty piece at the finish, even if a horse has won by a distance. Takes a bit of getting used too, but in my opinion it’s better than the constant drone of a few of them.
January 17, 2011 at 23:42 #336489Well well well, that was Lee McKenzie eh,thanks for that Robert,he has been around a while but that was the first time i have listened to him! He will find it tough to emulate Hoilesy and Holty on that performance i"m afraid!

He did and he answers a few points that had been raised on his style in this thread HERE
January 18, 2011 at 13:31 #336544Cheers Pete,at least Lee can take criticism i see, fair play to him for that,i shall watch with interest next time he gets on the big stage! By the way i contributed to that thread after having a go at commentating myself! Not easy!
January 18, 2011 at 19:02 #336582Lee is top notch. He was the Five Live commentator for many years until John Hunt took over.
I watched the replay on Racing UK and he seemed in good form. Can’t understand the criticism above.January 18, 2011 at 19:10 #336584

I like Lee McKenzie, his commentary style is like a boy racer, he waits then revs up out the blue.
January 19, 2011 at 06:26 #336651I was at Chepstow when Lee was calling a few months ago (day of the Escort’men attempted mount incident), and appreciating that there were a large proportion of "casual" racegoers went great lengths to explain things to the non-regular. (Racing For Change – were you listening?). Good to see him getting a big call.
Lee’s one of what I call the "entertainer" commentators who play to the audience (Mark Johnson & Thommo are others) and has made the pregnant pause an art-form!
